Chapter One

****

Elizabeth Penning sighed softly as she stared at the flickering flames before her. The hour was late and she knew that she should've retired long ago but her mind was filled with thoughts of a man she was sure she could never have. Ever since she could remember she had known Sir Rupert Giles but as she grew older her feelings for him changed. She never thought of him as a father figure, Elizabeth always saw him as a very good friend.

Elizabeth was always interested in the written word. Though women were only suppose to look beautiful and hope a man of good stature and wealth would take them to be their bride but Elizabeth had other ideas. She had dreams of seeing the world and learning new languages. Though she was already fluent in three, it was all due to Rupert's tutelage. As soon as he learned of her thirst for knowledge he instantly offered his services as a friend and tutor and Elizabeth happily accepted.

Rupert Giles was a handsome man with many women fawning after him. Many fathers wished to have their daughters mated to him but Rupert always declined. He was a widower but his wife died just a year before Elizabeth was born so she never met the women. Though from what she heard, there was love in the marriage but it was more a friendship than anything. Rupert and his late wife Jennifer never did have any children. His wife’s death left Rupert with no heir to his title and estate.
Elizabeth knew that he would never even look in her direction, for she was just a seventeen year old girl and Rupert Giles was a distinguished 37 year old man. So she would continue to love him from afar and with those as her last thoughts she let the cover of sleep blanket her.

That was how her father found his daughter in the morning, curled up on the chair in front of a dying fire where the novel called Utopia lay in her lap.

Joyce Penning walked into the great hall to find her husband in deep thought. She knew he was concerned for their daughter; Buffy was already seventeen years old and was still not betrothed to any man. Oh Joyce knew her daughter could be difficult, that was what made her so appealing to so many of her younger suitors. Though known of them mattered, William and she had promised Buffy to Giles long ago.

They knew how deeply their friend was hurt by his wife sudden passing and with a child on the way, they promised him that if it were to be a girl she would become his wife if he wished it. That was seventeen years ago and Rupert has yet to make an inquiry about their daughter, little did they know that both their daughter and Rupert longed for the other.

"I am sure he will ask for her soon my lord, he has no heir and to wed our sweet Buffy he would surely gain one" his wife and queen trying to be the voice of reason.

"Oh I know you are right but Buffy is already of age. I could've had her married by the time she turned fifteen but I figured that Rupert would eventually come calling for her and he has yet to do so." William knew he sounded a bit childish but he was beyond caring. His daughter has yet to wed and she was not the easiest of women to deal with either.

"Give him time, Buffy is much younger than he is and he has known her since her birth. It must be a bit awkward for him, don't worry so William, Rupert will come for her. I know he will" only pausing for a moment she continues on to reassure her husband. "I have seen the looks her sends her way when he believes no one is looking. He does love her; Rupert just may not be in love with her, not yet anyway. You will see everything will work out in the end"

Kissing her husbands brow she turned and began to exit the room. Glancing back at his wife's retreating form he could only hope all that she said was true.

Joyce set about the task of finding her daughter. She knew her Buffy would only be either in one of two places. The library curled up with some book or out in the gardens again with some book.

Checking the library and finding her daughter not there she turned and went directly to one of the many gardens on the grounds.

Only she, William and Rupert knew of this garden. It was completely closed off from the rest of the grounds. The walls were covered in thick, lush, green vines. Even the old wooden doors were covered in the same greenery. To gain entrance into the secluded garden, a key was needed. Of course Elizabeth was the sole holder of said key.

Elizabeth was a kind and gentle person but she could be quite the spitfire when she wanted to be. As Joyce pushed aside the vines and passed through the doors, she began to descend the cobble stone steps.

Her heels clicked against the semi-moss covered stone. When she finally reached the end of the narrow stairway she rounded a corner and was greeted by beautiful sight of roses in full bloom.

The stone path soon ended and she began to walk on the bare earth itself. The ground was covered in all sorts of plant life. Wild flowers, corn flowers, tulips, roses, African lilies blossomed at her feet. As she began to walk deeper into the garden she finally caught sight of her daughter.

Elizabeth Penning was a true beauty. She sat in the shade, underneath a beautiful weeping willow. Blonde tresses feel down passed her shoulders, blowing gently with the warm summer breeze. Her daughter not only loved the written word but nature itself, Elizabeth was fascinated with the world around her. So there were always animals around. A baby deer was taking its first steps not to far off from where Elizabeth was sitting. Then just above her a mother robin was feeding her young.

It was mid-day so the sun was shining down on them both but it was very hot that day. It was a lovely day to be outside the princess was taking advantage of it.

“I knew that I’d find you here” the queen’s voice floated over to her daughter.

Elizabeth smiled softly before raising her eyes to meet her mother’s. She knew that eventually someone would come looking for her, she was just glad that it wasn’t Wesley her attendant and her best male friend. He always did love to scold her about her fanciful dreams.

“Good Afternoon, mother I trust you slept well. I decided to get an early start this morning. I’m sorry I missed you”

Joyce chuckled softly known her daughter loved to greet the dawn, she always said it made her feel alive.

“You always were one to rise with the sun, except when there is reason to be out late with stars” Elizabeth knew her mother was referring to the balls and parties her parents had her attend.

“Yes well, what is it you wanted. I know you wouldn’t have come all this way for nothing”

Sighing softly, knowing how her daughter was never one dance around a subject. “Sir Rupert Giles is coming to stay with us…for the rest of the summer” Joyce knew this would be all fine and good. She knew her daughter loved having Rupert around she just didn’t think her daughter would like the reason for it.

“Oh that’s just wonderful. I love spending time with him; you know he is the only person I know that enjoys translating old Latin scriptures. Some of the stories are quite amusing” she said with a small secretive smile

Elizabeth was elated…Rupert Giles was staying with her and her family for the duration of the summer. Perhaps this was her chance to show him that she could be the women he was meant to love.

Joyce did have to laugh a little at her daughter’s reaction. She knew that her Buffy was taken with Rupert but she believed she thought of him as a father. Well hopefully that would all change.

“I’m thrilled that you’re pleased. He should be arriving later on this evening. So I’d like you to be on time for supper for once in your life Elizabeth”

Buffy knew that tone of voice, most everyone called her Buffy except when she was being reprimanded or spoken to by someone of lower class.

“I promise mother, I shall be on time”

With a parting smile, her mother left her alone in the garden with her thoughts. Of course all Buffy could think about was her life long friend and how she seemed so much more to him.
