Chapter 9: The Helplessness of Sleep
Chapter 9: The Helplessness of Sleep
Giles was scared out of his mind. And Xander was petrified with fear.
“Stop it Giles, please stop it!”
“She told me not to!”
“If you don’t I will, please Giles, I can’t take it any more!”
Giles could see Xander’s hands trembling, and he understood the reason. Xander was not a coward; he had seen a lot of things in his life. Had fought monsters and hell gods, lost friends and loved ones, and remained the same through it all. Giles had seen plenty of horrors himself, but nothing like this.
The girls had been trashing in bed, sobbing and moaning for an hour, obviously experiencing something terrible, but that had changed in the last five minutes. Buffy’s body continued to shake violently and she had almost felt out of the bed, she was screaming and there was perspiration covering her whole body.
But what really scared him and had started Xander’s trembling was Willow.
She had gone perfectly still a while ago, tears running down her cheeks and into the pillow. Then she had opened her mouth and a horrible scream had started and had yet to end. She must be sustaining herself with magicks because she wasn’t breathing, the scream just went on and on, without pause.
Xander covered his hears “Giles, please” Xander’s voice was just a murmur, with a scared child quality that got to Giles.
He moved to the bed and took a deep breath, hoping that Willow’s magicks would not act against him.
He shook her and the scream stop so abruptly that he almost felt backwards in the sudden silence.
Willow’s eyes were open. She sat in bed without moving for a minute and then moved faster than humanly possible and stared shaking Buffy, who remained trapped in the dream.
“Oh God, Buffy, please wake up, please wake up. Help me!” she said to Xander, who was on Buffy’s side of the bed. “We have to get her out!”
Together they shook their friend and told her to wake up, but to no avail.
She had gone completely still, and she was silent, but she remained asleep.
“I promised her I wouldn’t leave her alone, I promised” Willow cried to herself over and over as she tried to wake Buffy.
Xander was crying as well and Giles didn’t know what to do. Suddenly Willow stopped her tears and released a bolt of energy directly into Buffy.
Xander felt backwards with a shout as the energy repelled his hands from Buffy’s shoulders, and as he stood up he could see Willow crashing more energy into their friend and heard Gilles call franticly for Willow to stop.
But Willow didn’t stop; she continued shocking Buffy until she collapsed into the bed, unable to continue. Crying desperately and holding onto her friend.
“She’s all alone. I left her there all alone!”
