Xander watched Samantha work. She was tense and hadn’t said a word since Xander came in. Putting his weapon down Xander tried to look at his shoulder. His vest was torn from armpit to lower back. Digging his hand in Xander pulled it out bloody. Cursing himself Xander searched his pockets for bandages only to jump when a small hand touched his wound.
“Ow!”
Xander frowned at Dr.Grimm who was hiding a smile as she looked at the wound. “We’ll need to take you to the infirmary. That wound needs stitches. And the one above your eyebrow, if it reopens blood could get into your eyes.” Xander was about to say something when Goat whispered into the radio.
“Some things in Carmacks’s lab.”
Putting his hand to his ear, Xander frowned and picked up his gun. Guarding the door Xander waited for something to happen. He tensed as he heard shots fired.
“Dr. Grimm stay here!” Said Xander as he ran off.
Staying close to the wall Xander ran to the commotion to find his squad surrounding a corner. There quivering like a leaf stood Dr. Carmack. He was hunched over, bloody, and obviously in shock. Since the others were only standing there pointing their gun’s Xander was going to calm the shaky man down when Dr. Grimm slipped passed him.
“Samantha! I told you to stay-” Said Reaper as he tried to pull his sister away from the bloody man. But she was as stubborn as her brother, she shouldered him aside and calmly approached Dr. Carmack.
They watched as the old man twitched and held the severed arm above his head then dropped it from lax hands. Every step closer Samantha got the bloody man would scrunch into himself. The man gave Xander the creeps. He barely looked like his picture. Suddenly Dr. Carmack made a quick hand movement and grabbed his ear. Xander watched wide-eyed as Dr. Carmack ripped his own ear off. Like the pop of a cork off of fizzy wine blood sprayed out showering one side of the wall red.
“Oh. Nice.”Said Portman as he laughed. Portman had a sick sense of humor. The kid’s eyes were bulging, his face green . . . he seamed to be sweating. Dr. Grimm asked for a med. kit and put gauze to the man’s bloody hole that use to be a perfectly normal ear.
“Duke help Dr. Grimm get Carmack to the infirmary. Everyone pairs, lets find the body that goes with that arm.” Sarge had a scowl on his face as he motioned them to go. Xander rushed over, he was about to leave with Reaper and Goat when Dr. Grimm spoke up.
“ He has an injury that needs tending.” She said as she pointed at Xander. Everyone stopped and fallowed Samantha’s finger.
Sarge sighed. “Go with um Pup. Get your injuries looked at. Guard Carmack and Dr. Grimm.” With that said Xander fallowed Duke to the infirmary. He knew Duke was looking forward to sitting around and watching Samantha . . . Xander wasn’t. He so wanted to watch . . . other people.
As he got to the nano wall Xander watched Duke acted like a baby. ‘I don’t do nano walls! I’m not going in there! Pup you go!’ Xander mouthed as he stepped through the wall and into the med. lab. Side stepping Xander scanned the room while Duke stayed out there flirting with Reaper’s sister.
Signaling for the others to come in Xander shouldered his weapon and went to one of the cabinets and pulled out some medical supplies. He rolled his eyes as Duke practically jumped through the wall with the Doctors fallowing in calmly behind. *So much for being a soldier.* Thought Xander as he handed Dr. Willits a suture and some gauze.
Carmack was laying on a padded table, he was stuttering like a loon. Xander looked down at the man, he was wild-eyed and kept talking about something being inside. ‘It’s inside. Inside . . . Shut it down!’ It was creeping him out. The very man made something in Xander rear up a growl.
Leaving the doctors to their work Xander pulled out suture for himself. Taking off his vest and shirt Xander looked at his wound in the mirror. The slash wasn’t deep but it was long and there was a lot of dried blood across his back, but the top of the wound did need a couple of stitches. Pulling a bit of catgut out Xander threaded the needle he was about to stitch himself up when the brunet doctor took it from him.
“You should let me do that, at least I have a doctorate. It should really be numbed first.”
Xander sighed as the doctor fussed over him. He watched as she cleaned it out and grabbed a clear bottle of medicine. She filled a needle and without a word to him stabbed him with it.
“OW! Damn!”
Xander gave the grinning woman a wary look. “Your trying to kill me, aren’t you?” He said as he watched her neatly sew him up. Seventeen stitches later Dr. Willits was done.
“Thank you Ma’am for the help.” He put on his shirt and vest and was about to check on Carmack when Dr. Willits pushed him back onto the seat.
“Wha?”
The short brunet woman smiled at Xander and pointed her small finger at his forehead. “That’s going to need stitches too. So why do they call you Pup? You don’t look like a puppy?” She asked as she threaded another needle.
Xander smiled. “Hell if I know. But I think it might have something to do with my eyes.”
Blinking up at the short haired woman, she gave him a tiny smile as she prepared another shot. “My daughter would really like you. You’re the type she stares at on tv and in those magazines when we go to Earth. She’s about ten now.” She said as she started sewing right above his eyebrow.
“Really. I’ll have to meet her.”
Dr. Willits chuckled. “Be careful, Victoria might try to get you to merry her.” Snipping the thread she bandaged the wound then started putting everything away.
“ Thanks again, Doc!” Walking over to Duke Xander smirked as Duke hovered by Dr. Grimm.
“No blood match. That’s bad right?” Said Duke. Samantha was staring at the screen flabbergasted.
“That’s not right . . .” She ran over to where Dr. Carmack was resting only to find the man missing. Cursing Xander scoured the room for the old man. Xander was told to watch him and look what happened! He’s gone!
Fallowing the blood Xander blinked. *Somewhere out there was an naked intellectual who preferred briefs.* Thought Xander as he looked at the tip of his gun, on it was a pair of tightie-whities. Dropping it back onto the ground, Xander went back to the others. * I’m not too sure I want to find Dr. Carmack.* He thought with a little shudder.
********************
Duke watched as Xander paced back and forth . . . once . . . twice . . . sigh. And pace some more. Ever since the radio flared up with activity Pup had been walking around watching the clock worrying like a wife for her hubby. Finally after the fifth round of pacing Duke had enough.
“Pup, man! Sit your ass down! You’re giving this black man a headache.”
Giving Duke a dirty look Xander sat down on one of the counters. The squad was out there! They were chasing something big. Something not human . . . Xander should be out there! He had experience with demons.
“What the hell is happening?”
Duke shrugged. “Don’t know Pup. I’m just glad I’m not in the sewer. Don’t sweat it Reaps and Sarge can take care of anything. They’re the best!” He said with a wink hoping Pup would ease up. Xander was bitting his lip as he listened to his radio.
“My lights down.” Said Goat. Xander fidgeted. This was a classic horror movie phrase. So not good! “Stay there! I’m on my way!” Said Reaper, his breath heaving on the radio. Xander started pacing again.
“Damn it Xan, your driving me bats-” Duke didn’t say any more as screaming and yelling started over the radio. The sound of fighting, metal hitting flesh, and Reaper grunting as he fought something. Then silence . . . Both soldiers held their breaths.
“Man down! Man down!” Yelled Reaper through the com.
“What the fuck is happening Duke . . .”
***************
They waited and within a minute the others came running in a severely bleeding Goat over Sarge and Reapers shoulders. The seconds it took to get Goat on a stretcher was full of chaos.
“Get his vest off!” Yelled Reaper as he pulled over machines.
“Portman get a line here!”
“What happened?” Samantha addressed the question Xander wanted to ask. Portman answered in his round about way.
“He was talking about devils. All his bible shit. Good and evil. Devils among us. ” Xander sighed. Now that told him a lot. His blood loss made him pale and Xander couldn’t believe the man had a pulse. Xander held a bandage over the hole in Goat’s neck but blood just seamed to leak through his fingers. Xander watched the monitor and the sound of it flat lining made his skin crawl.
Sarge was stalking around like a caged lion, he seamed quite ill at ease around the dying. Sarge walked over to the other end of the room, Xander hoped he wouldn’t notice Dr. Carmack was gone.
“Where’s the hell is Carmack?” He growled. *Damn.* Thought Xander. Staying quit he let Dr. Grimm answer Sarge.
“He disappeared.” she said simply.
“What do you mean he disappeared!!”
“He’s gone. He disappeared.” She said as she filled a needle with adrenaline.
One had to admire how hard Reaper worked to save the other soldier. They all looked on as he shocked the unresponsive man. “Let’s defib! Clear!” Once . . .
“We’re losing him.” Twice . . .
“Come on you son of a bitch!!!” .. . . again!
Nothing.
As the adrenaline was injected into Goat they held their breaths as Reaper used the paddles one last time.
Flat-line . . .Dead.
Xander backed away as Reaper kicked the trays in anger then watched as the other man collected Goat’s dog tag.
Xander had to help Destroyer put Goat into his body bag. Destroyer patted Xander on the shoulder.
“Do me a favor Pup. If I get killed hit Duke in the back of the head for me. And make sure my mugs not fucked up.”
Xander frowned. “Shut up. Your not going to kick it! Besides you have hands, you can hit Duke yourself. But if you do buy it . . .sure I’ll make sure your make-ups not smeared.” Destroyer snorted and cuffed Xander in the back of the head. They went back into the main room to find Dr. Grimm, Reaper, and Sarge having a shouting match.
“Doctor your going to tell us what the fuck is going on here!?!” Said Sarge as he got in her face.
“What?!” She said in a steady voice.
Sarge scowled as he stomped over to a body bag and unzipped it. “This is what!!!”
“OH! GOD!” Yelled Samantha as she stared wide-eyed at the thing on the floor. The surprise and disgust in her voice could be heard clearly. Xander had never seen a demon like the one on the ground, it seamed to be made out of . . .shit. The skin was brownish and thick. It had a huge mouth and a dozen or so eyes. Its skin looked bug like and webbed, it was covered in lumps. It was damn ugly and if Xander turned his head more to the left it kinda looked like his great auntie Hester.
“Have you found anything like this on your archeological digs?!” Demanded Sarge.
“No.”
“Could it have come from outside? The surface.” Yelled Sarge as he and all the other soldiers stared at Dr. Grimm. Xander thought about Carmack and how his face was distorting the last time he had seen him. All the scientists they had found were crazed. Whatever was happening it was internal. Some sort of Frankenstein thing.
“No. The planet is completely dead.” Portman being himself was panicked and always mouthed off when scared.
“It came from somewhere lady!”
“Portman shut up!” Said Sarge without even looking at the man in question.
“The atmosphere of the surface can’t support life.”
“It could have come from another planet or something!” Samantha gave a cute little sneer. “What like an alien?” Xander raised a brow at the bite in Dr. Grimm’s voice.
“LOOK AT THAT THING!!” Screamed Portman his thin hair flying about as he pointed at the dead creature on the ground. Xander smirked. Portman was as reliable as a two year old when he’s afraid. Though Xander thought he was being a bit over-dramatic. Sarge must think so too because a vain was bulging on his forehead.
“Portman you need to shut the fuck UP!!!”
“That’s not what we saw . . . That’s not what Goat and I shot at in genetics.” Said Reaper in a neutral voice. Xander sighed. * Of course! Something not human, something big.* The thing before them on the floor was ugly, freaky, and creepy. But it was small. Reaper had a good eye. If he said he saw something big, something that wasn’t this, then they were in trouble.
“Y-you telling me there is m-more of these fucking things!!!” Said Portman in a calmer voice.
“Where are your surface entry points?!” Said Sarge, right to business.
************************
There were two entry points, a pressure door in the north corridor and a dig sight entrance. Sarge had called Mac up and ordered him to meet them in the atrium after he armed Pinky with ST grenades. So now everyone but Duke and Samantha were circled up waiting for Sarge’s orders. Everyone was a bit edgy and Portman was just plain freaking out.
“We’re going back in through the airlock.” Said Sarge a trade mark scowl on his long face.
“We’re not calling in back up?” Asked Portman as he fucked round with his ear piece.
“The Ark is sealed. Nothing gets back until everything on this planet is dead.”
Xander had no problem with that. Even though the world he was in had no big demon problems that Xander was aware of, the world was crappy enough as it was. What with weak governments and road rages, earth didn’t need neck sucking booger people too. They’d want equality and stuff. * That would be funny. The right to suck or not to suck! That is the question. *
“We’re going in hot.”
Xander watched as Portman had another little fit when he realized they were going back in. After Sarge got in Portman’s face, the man shouldered his weapon and everyone was off. Destroyer, Portman, and Kid went to secure the north airlock, while Sarge, Reaper, Mac and Xander went to the archeological dig.
*******************
Xander was the last to enter the dig, he was behind Reaper. It was dark. Digging equipment was all around the unstable cavern. They could hear water dripping. Something about this place was setting Xander spidey sense. There was something in the cavern, something watching them.
“Mac, Pup, watched our exit. If anything gets passed us, it will be flushed out to you.” With that said Sarge and Reaper disappeared into the gloom.
“Hey, Mac. How did you do with gimpy?”
Mac shrugged. “Was boring. Needed a tv.”
With that said both man became silent and watchful. They felt watched and as soldiers it was a very uneasy feeling. Walking a little farther in Xander flashed his light into every corner. Every once in a while rock would move and the sound of a beast growling softly echoed in the cave.
Xander felt a bit cornered. That feeling always awakened something untamed, rage filled, and maternal within him. It freaked him out at times. He had hoped the bits of hyena would have vanished with his wish, but it seamed her and halloween soldier were still their just farther away in his mind.
Walking back towards Mac he stood in a shard of light. It was silent and something was whispering softly in the back of his head. ~ Careful . . . Danger . . . Be prepared . . .Intruder!~ Pulling his gun around Xander caught sight of something big and dark.
“Mac! I saw something. It . . . ”
That was as much as Xander got out before something with a lot of force behind it body slammed him. He went sailing right into a rock face head first. An explosion of stars flashed across Xander’s vison. His head felt full of cotton, his eyes fogged and almost unseen. His eyes were gritty with dust his little flight had produced and he could feel blood run hot down the left side of his face. Xander tried to stand up but a big hand grabbed him by the back of his vest and threw him into another body.
“OOF!”
********************
“Mac! I saw something. It . . . ”
Pup’s warning barely sounded when the creature attacked. Mac barely raised his gun when Pup flu across the cavern and into a wall. A large shadow fallowed his movement. Mac fired trying to shoot rounds into the fast nearly invisible threat.
“Mac! Pup! What’s happening?” Yelled Sarge through the radio.
“We’re under attack!!!”Said Mac as he ran at the thing. Firing Mac tried to get to his downed comrade before the monster. Pup was staggering to his feet when the tall shadow appeared behind him. Lifting his gun to fire Mac cursed as Pup’s flailing body was thrown right at him. Getting up Mac pushed Pup aside feeling a little guilty for adding a couple more scratches to his friend but needed him out of the way of fire fast.
Mac gasped as the creature barreled into him, tossing him to the ground like a toy. Landing on his ass Mac was up and firing more rounds making the huge thing stumble. As he was about to fire again his gun jammed. With the thing swiping at his head Mac ducked and hit it in the face with his weapon. Giving the thing a round house kick in the chest, Mac backed up a bit and tried to un-jam his gun.
He was caught off guard at its quick recovery, it was almost on him when Pup appeared. Mac dodged and saw Pup jam a heavy duty 8 inch blade into the thing with little effect. Pup seamed to ride its back like it was a bull for a few seconds before being grabbed and thrown. Pulling his hand gun, Mac was about to fire in the beasts face when it ended up in his.
He barely got his yell of shock out before he went sailing into a pile of digging tools. Pain and numbness bloomed equally in his chest and the oddest cocktail of emotions. Fear . . . regret . . . confusion . . . wonder . . . then calm. And for a second he could almost swear he heard his mother’s voice say everything would be all right.
***********
Xander was beginning to feel like a pinball when he was pushed roughly aside, hitting his already sore body against more rock. He could see little but his hearing seamed amplified by adrenaline and a bit of fear. Standing up on shaky legs Xander wiped blood out of his eyes and pulled a knife from one of his pockets. He didn’t know where his gun was, he had lost his grip of it when he hit rock the second time.
Xander could hear gun fire and the sound of a beast roaring and heavy things getting tossed about. Mac was fighting alone and Xander needed to help. It didn’t even cross Xander’s mind that by running into danger as vulnerable as he was at the moment could forfeit his own life.
Walking toward the sound Xander blinked his tearing eyes and could make out the shape of the thing he had seen. Jumping on the bulky greyish thing Xander plunged his knife into its meaty shoulder. It roared and flung Xander off with ease.
Striking into something metal Xander hissed as fire raced up his back. He slides to the ground with a groan his vison fading. Trying to stay awake Xander was startled by Mac’s scream of pain and something landing hard near him. He heard the monster growl as its steps came closer to Xander.
Xander could hear the sounds of labored wet breathing nearby, and deeper in the tunnel he could hear Reaper and Sarge yelling for them to ‘fucking answer’ them, he could also hear the others asking to know what the situation is. But all sound seamed muted by Xander’s heart beat. His body hurt and everything was buzzing in his head. He felt sleepy . . . He just wanted to shut his eyes for a moment.
~UP!!!!! UP!!!!!!! THREAT!!!~ Snapping his heavy eyes open Xander yelped as he saw the fuzzy image of the thing coming at him. Its long toothed mouth open ready to take a bite out of him, his knife still deep in its shoulder. Fumbling for his hand gun Xander cursed his pockets. He knew he wouldn’t be able to pull it before the beast was on him.
Suddenly the sound of gun fire went off, the sound of running feet echoed. It was music to Xander’s ears. The creature was startled and ran for the exit. Reaper had a flashlight shining in his eyes asking Xander if he was ok. Xander pushed him off and told him to get the creature.
“I’m fine . . . GO!! Get that thing!” Reaper’s face swam in his vison for a moment and was gone the sound of him running fading.
Then . . . silence. Getting up Xander leaned against a piece of digging equipment panting from the effort it took to get up. Wiping bothersome blood from his eyes Xander staggered to where Mac landed. He was under some shovels, picks, and rebar. Moving those things aside Xander found a very pale barely breathing Mac. A wrapped bundle of rebar sticking out of his chest, blood covered his body from the neck down.
“Oh . . . man.” Whispered Xander as he tried to feel for a pulse. The moment he touched the other man he seamed to wake up. His eyes opened wide, his breathing wet, blood dribbled from his mouth.
“P-Pup? C-can you ‘ear her. S-she said e-verything w-will be fine . . . I s-see her.” Xander frowned.
“Shhh man. I need to get you to the infirmary.” Said Xander as he sat up the other man. He didn’t know how he would get Mac help but he would. Mac hissed in pain.
“ Xan?” Xander looked up and met Mac’s dazed eyes.
“I h-have a l-letter . . . for my girl . . . in m-my front p-pocket. G-get it t-to her.”
With that said Mac went limp, his chest no longer moving. Closing Mac’s open eyes, Xander gently laid the man down. He dug around Mac’s neck collar, he knew it was useless but he searched for a pulse. Nothing. Finding the letter Xander got Mac’s dogtag, he put both in his pocket. Standing Xander staggered to the exit.
