Chapter 8: In the Realm of Hades

Chapter 8: In the Realm of Hades

The world was dark, not the dark of night, but something different, something that felt menacing, alive, something that got inside you and suppressed all memories of light, all memories of joy. This was darkness the likes of which she had never felt before.

Willow looked through Buffy’s eyes into a barren landscape, devoid of any signs of life. The sky was a muddy grey, a storm brewing in the distance, thunder and lighting crashing to the earth. There was nothing there, just the dark and a deep feeling of helplessness that took residence in her heart and refused to leave her.

Buffy stood still, murmuring under her breath. Willow strained to hear what she was saying; it was repeated over and over, like a litany.
“Where are you?”

In an instant, the view changed and Willow found herself looking at the same barren land, the only thing that marked the difference from their previous location was a small depression in the earth, like a dry lake, right in front of Buffy’s feet.

There was movement in the center of it and Willow could feel Buffy straining to move forward, but there was something detaining her, like a glass wall or an energy field. Buffy keep trying to advance but to no avail. The movement in the center of the depression started again and Willow force her eyes to try and determine was it was.
There was a man there, lying in a fetal position, holding his knees close to his chest with his arms, his head close to his chest.

Willow could feel Buffy’s agitation increasing and suddenly her friend started hitting and clawing and the invisible wall that separated her from the man. She was moaning and sobbing loudly but apparently her voice didn’t carry past the barrier, as the man didn’t acknowledge her presence. But suddenly, Willow realized that she could hear the man’s voice, as could Buffy who started to claw harder at the barrier by now completely desperate.

The voice sounded far away, and faint, but very distinct. Willow concentrated to hear the words above the sounds of anguish of the slayer.

“I couldn’t save her, she dead, everybody is dead, Red is dead, The Watcher is dead, The Whelp is dead, my Niblett is dead, She is dead, all of them are dead, because of me, because I’m a thing, because I’m nothing, I’m nothing”.

“She told me I was nothing, but I didn’t want to believe her, and She was so right. Of course she couldn’t love me, nobody can love me, I don’t deserve to be loved.
It should start now, it’s time, it should start now, it’s time....”

The last was repeated over and over, and Buffy kept banging at the invisible wall, murmuring and sobbing. “They are not dead, I’m not dead, I’m here! I’m here!”
“You didn’t do anything wrong, I’m here, please hear me, I’m here!”

Then something changed, Buffy felt to her knees and leaned against the barrier. She kept repeating “Oh my God, not again, not again”
And Willow saw what she was referring to, what she had seen, and she saw the resigned expression on his face as he uncoiled from his previous position. And she started sobbing herself, started trying to break the barrier with her magicks, trying to scream, and unable to. She kept trying, but there was nothing she could do, she was trapped inside Buffy’s mind, and Buffy couldn’t do anything herself, though she continued shouting and slamming herself against whatever it was that separated her from Spike.

Inside Buffy’s mind, Willow was so horrified by what she was witnessing that it never occurred to her to go back, to find her link to Xander and return to reality, all she could think about was to get to Spike. To do something, to stop what was happening before her eyes, to stop herself. To stop the Willow on the other side of the wall.
