Chapter 6: Mending Bridges
“I’m really not up to it, Giles”.
Giles continued walking towards the porch steps where Buffy was sitting, and sat beside her.
“But I need to tell you how deeply sorry I am” he said quietly, “How very sorry”.
Buffy turned to face him and Giles looked at her with such an expression of contrition in his eyes that Buffy lost all words.
“I was blind, I didn’t see. I apologize, to you and I would apologize to him if I could.
I wish I could have been there more for you, and to had been more open minded, maybe then you would not had had to go through this alone”.
The sincerity in her ex-watcher’s eyes was unmistakable and Buffy could not deny it.
“I’m sorry too. I was too ashamed to tell you; and I’ve done so many things wrong”.
“You have nothing to be ashamed of with me, Buffy, never”.
“Yes I do. At first I was ashamed because of him, of who he was, what he was. But then I was ashamed of myself, when I finally saw that I was the one....I only told Tara, I couldn’t face the rest of you, I knew what you would say, and you would have blamed him, and all the time it was me”.
“You can tell me now, anything, I’m here for you, always. Maybe we could talk after you are better. Perhaps after we know more of what if affecting you, we could go walking together and talk like we used to... Just talk, without assigning guilt, without apologies?”
“I’d like that, Giles, I’ve missed you”.
More calm now they embraced, and together entered the house to meet the others.
“Ok, here’s the drill. Buffy will go to sleep and I’ll be there to see if the nightmares are the cause for her unwellness, Giles will monitor and Xander will be my anchor, questions?”
The others were quiet, that was the best response when Willow went into Wicca Commander Mode.
“Ok then, let’s set up”.
