Laughter II
It was laughter that made Buffy resolve to get to the bottom of the Xander puzzle.
It was laughter that startled Buffy out of her reverie. They had been fruitlessly researching the latest monster of the week and she had started to zone out when the sound of Xander’s laughter rang out. Buffy turned her head and saw a grinning Spike in his black leather jacket, black tee and jeans ensemble leaning over the counter to Xander telling him a long involved story about some movie involving Marilyn Monroe and cross dressing. “So then he tells him, ‘I’m a man’ and the guy says ‘Nobody’s perfect.’”
Xander snickered.
Anya rolled her eyes.
Xander smiled at her and announced to the group, “Well, I’m researched out and I’m pretty hungry so, I think I’ll take my woman and go home.”
“That means everyone else has to leave too,” Anya said eagerly.
“Yes, Anya we get that.”
Everyone filtered out of the store.
“Willow, will you do me a favor and take Dawn home? There’s something I want to check out.”
“No problem. Can I help with anything?”
“Nah, it’s really just a hunch.”
“‘Kay, be careful.”
“Oh, I will, don’t worry.”
With that, Buffy grabbed a flashlight from the store and parted from the group. She did a quick walkabout and when she thought everyone had headed towards home she started in the direction of Anya and Xander’s house. As she thought, Spike and Xander were walking with Anya in the middle and all three were laughing and joking about something. He said something to them and all three veered into the convenience store on the way.
‘Good, they’re on the way home.’ Buffy headed in the opposite direction towards Spike’s crypt.
When she got there, she opened the door and flipped on the flashlight. TV, ratty couch, ‘couch?’ empty beer bottles, and an ashtray full of cigarettes. “Hmmm, let’s check the fridge shall we?” She opened the fridge and found some blood, assorted imported and American beers. “What are we hiding downstairs then?”
She climbed down the ladder and checked around. Unmade bed, tube of lubricant, “can we say ewww?” and a couple of pairs of shoes, including a very unSpikelike pair of Reeboks. Draped over a chair were black jeans, “check,” black tee shirt, “check,” and a Hawaiian shirt, “oho, what have we here?” She looked for the old Buffy Shrine corkboard and found a smattering of pictures of herself, Dawn, Willow and Tara, “awww,” and quite a few pictures of Xander and Anya, including ones that she had never had seen before. She pulled one Polaroid off and took a close look at it. The background appeared to be a wooden headboard, very similar to the one the bed she was sitting one. Xander was shirtless and Anya was holding her arm over what appeared to be bare breasts. Buffy felt a strange feeling in the pit of her stomach. She shook it off and was going to look around some more when she heard a noise upstairs. She quickly doused her light and crept towards the ladder ready to hide if it was Spike. She heard some crashing around, some muffled cursing and then a thump. She slowly crawled up the ladder and peeped out. Spike was standing over what appeared to be a Sleestak. He had one foot on its shoulder and another on its head ready to snap its neck.
“And tell me again why I shouldn’t just kill you for intruding on my domain?”
“Ssssspike, I have a proposition for you.”
“Yeah, try again.”
“We know of your disability.”
“Uh huh, that’s nice, say goodbye…”
“Your chip.”
Silence.
“You just bought yourself a few minutes.”
“My employers have sent me to offer you a deal. We know of your willingness to work with unconventional allies, such as the Slayer.”
“Who are your employers?”
“I can’t really say.”
“You do realize I can still kill you?”
“Trust me, death is preferable to what they might do to me if I reveal anything they don’t want me to.”
Spike stepped away. “Tell me more.”
“Right now I can’t. We just would like you to consider this option with an open mind. I’ll return in a few days after you’ve had time to think about it and then I’ll give you more details.”
The demon stood, brushed himself off, did a couple of neck rolls. “By the way, I’m impressed, a vengeance demon?”
Spike stared hard at him. “What do I call you?”
“Enik.”
“How do I get a hold of you?”
“I’ll be in touch with you.”
And with that the demon strolled out.
Spike watched him leave then left himself without looking back.
Buffy heaved a sigh of relief. She finished climbing up, looked around and decided to have a talk with Giles.
