Chapter 4

Chapter 4

Both horses bucked and it was a wonder they didn’t all end up littering the dirt path they were following. As it was, Spike had to tighten his hold on the reigns and throw an arm around Samuel to insure the lad didn’t fall and break his neck. He gave at growl at the intruders blocking their path, almost gaping when he realized it was that same group from before. Suddenly he struck with a realization,” My god, that boy’s a bloody Xander clone.”

Ariana giggled at that one, calming her ride down easily and sending Spike a wink,” He is at that.” She rolled her eyes when he sent her a look,” You didn’t really think I found you by accident, do you. No, I know all about your little friends in Sunnyhell.”

“ Hey!”

They both looked at him with an almost bored look,” What?”

The brunette drew his sword,” The law is clear.”

Ariana’s eyes narrowed just a bit,” Really now. Well then...let me act my part.” It was the only warning she gave as she jumped from sitting to kneeling over her horse before vaulting up and over them, drawing her sword in midair before landing gracefully on her feet and adopting a fighting stance,” GO!”

Carter threw himself into the saddle and yelled at his horse, the animal taking off with a burst of speed. Spike didn’t even have time to object as his own horse immediately followed, leaving Ariana to fight by herself. But the elf just smirked in satisfaction, watching out of the corner of her eye while the rest of her focus was to the knights in front of her,” You insignificant peasants. Your duty used to be to the king, not to those pompous baboons in parliament.”

The knight nodded for a portion of his guard to hunt but Ariana was quick, face rippling to produce golden eyes and fangs even as she sent a rolling growl through the air that made their mounts buck their riders free before running away in terror. She smirked before meeting eyes with the head knight once more,” Run along now.”

Spike growled, putting some weight into pulling on the reigns but the stubborn beast he was riding refused to slow. Not until they reach a growth of several trees at the bottom of a hill. There they stopped to drink and the angry blond practically threw himself off the horse and started pacing,” I should be back there. At least here I can fight, not run and hide like a pansy.” With each pass he would rub Samuel’s back absently, whom he carried around without thinking about it.

“ It’ll be okay.”

Spike looked over at Megan who was still on the horse, watching him worriedly. He walked over to her and ran a gentle hand down her cheek,” I know, sparrow.” He glanced over at Carter who was leaning down and watching, chin on his hand,” I’m sorry, luv. Just don’t like runnin’ is all.”

“ I can’t risk you. You’re too important.”

He spun around, temper not in check as he growled lowly at Ariana, though it stopped as he realized she looked just like any other vampire,” What the he-“

She smiled just a bit around her fangs and threw him a strawberry. He caught it without looking, glancing down and sniffing to realize it wasn’t a normal strawberry. It looked like fruit but the reality was the inside was anything but. He sank his fangs in, moaning at the richness that touched his tongue,” Human blood...even animal we can survive on. But that is what our intended diet is.” Spike felt almost light-headed as power he hadn’t even known he could possess coursed through him. He’d never felt so good, so strong. His eyes sharpened, his full strength suddenly restored. All from just one small piece. He looked up hungrily and she smirked,” That’s all you can get for now. Too much of that after being starved for so long and you’ll just throw it up.”

Spike frowned,” So the elves here, they make up the vampires in my world?”

She pursed her lips,” Not exactly. This world and that are similar in certain regards...our destination is just there. And it’s much easier to show you, than to explain it.”

He nodded agreeably, suddenly very curious. In the back of his mind he made note to ask for passage here now and again. Getting his hands on some more of those would eagerly replace the pigs blood he’d been living on for the last year or so. The band started off again, and something from earlier occurred to him, reminding him to ask,” Did you know about the chip?”

She glanced at him, her expression unreadable,” What about it?”

“ Did you know it would stop working?” She nodded wordlessly, not offering explanation.

That deja ’vu feeling that Spike would get every now and again hit him right between the eyes as soon as the castle was in sight. It was a monstrous building of stone, set at the end of the curving road. Complete with moat, their horses took them over the lowered bridge and into the inner courtyard. Gravel and straw crunched and shifted under the horses’ hooves as they passed by deserted stables and empty inner dwellings.

Around the corner, they passed through a second gate, this one raised up and ready to fall before coming as far as their steeds could go. They were met with bushes, long overgrown and wild flowers that stretched out in what used to be a magnificent garden. A turned over table. A broken chair. All leading up to large double doors into the actual palace itself.

“ I’ll take the horses.”

Ariana nodded to Carter gratefully, the lad eager to please as he led the two horses away. Spike stood, looking around with a sense of wonder, Samuel still in his arms and Megan holding onto his coat. He felt the dirt shirt under his feet as he walked up the stone steps, past the garden and into the palace. He was met with old furnishings pushed to one side, many damaged and all covered in cob webs and dust. At one time it was a rather grand sitting room.

But it was the painting in the center that captured his attention. It was obviously the royal family, the king sitting rather proudly on his throne. His presence commanding, his blue eyes gazing thoughtfully. The queen at his side, her features very much elfen and holding a small infant nestled to her bosom. Spike walked to the painting, not saying a word as he read the plate crafted into the frame.

Their Majesties King William of New Shire and Queen Olivia
And his Royal Highness Prince William

Without thinking his eyes shot back to the King, seeing something in his eyes. His blue eyes. Then he remembered the old man at the forest’s edge,”...he has his eyes...” He jerked around to Ariana who nodded silently, and his memory shifted.

It was definitely blurry, a brief memory of her dressed in knighted armor, calling the guards to charge and being ripped away from his father by his mother - Spike gasped, pushing Samuel into her arms and tearing down a corridor. Ariana put a steadying hand on Megan, telling the little one without words that he needed time to himself.
