Getting Over It
When Buffy awoke she was just as confused as ever. Plus her night had been filled disturbingly erotic images of Spike and Anya. Disturbing mainly because they were erotic. “Yikes. Has Riley been gone that long?” she asked herself. She shook her head and went downstairs.
Downstairs Dawn and Tara were eating breakfast. “Mmmmm pancakes. Are there enough for me?”
Tara smiled. “Of course there are Buffy.”
“Great! Has Willow returned?”
“Yes, Spike brought her back after he dropped Anya off at the hospital. You should have seen it, he was so sweet, he carried her upstairs without waking her up,” said Tara, smiling at the memory.
‘Yeah, I’ve seen how sweet he can be,’ thought Buffy savagely as she speared a piece of pancake. Instead, she just nodded and raised her eyebrows.
“Yeah Buffy, he has really changed,” Dawn chimed in enthusiastically.
In her head Buffy was screaming, ‘if screwing Anya counts as changing I guess he has!’
‘Don’t forget about loving Xander,’ another part of her brain whispered.
“Ugh!”
“B-buffy? Is there something wrong with the pancakes?” Tara asked.
“No, I just bit my tongue,” she lied. “So what’s everyone doing today?”
“Well dearest sister of mine, I was hoping to go to the mall with Janice and maybe getting Xander a get well present but sadly, I havemonemoney.”
Buffy rolled her eyes and went to get Dawn some money. “Fine, because it’s Xander, but we’re going to have curtail our spending after this. The insurance money is almost gone and since I’m not in school there is no student loan money. If it weren’t for the rent and grocery money that Willow and Tara are giving us, we’d be totally broke.”
“I’ll get an after school job.”
“No. You need to concentrate on school. I’m kind of hoping you’ll get a scholarship one day.”
“Buffy, Willow and I have some money saved up…”
“No, I’ll just have to get a job,” she paused and sighed. “Anyway enough of that for now. I’m going to the hospital to visit Xander.”
She wondered what she would say to Anya when saw saw her.
The answer was, not much. Anya was drawn and pale, with circles under her eyes. “How is he?”
“Actually he’s fine. He even woken up once. It’s just so hard seeing him like this. I’ve never seen him seriously hurt before.”
“Well, he’ll get better.”
“I know he will, but what about next time? It won’t stop you know. He’ll keep on foolishly risking himself.”
“You don’t know that.”
“Don’t patronize me Buffy. You know it’s true. And it’s all you fault! If you had never met him…”
“Anya, please don’t start this.”
“That’s right pet, leave it be. If it weren’t for Buffy, you would never have met our Xander.”
They turned to see Spike leaning in the doorway.
Anya sighed and sat down. “Fine. You’re right. It’s just so hard.”
Buffy stared at Spike. Images of muscled white flesh, entwined with honeyed limbs kept popping in her head.
“Done staring at me Slayer?”
“Huh? Oh! I wasn’t staring, I was…Hey! Do you want to go patrolling with me tonight? I’m pretty sure we didn’t kill all the sweater demons the other night.”
Spike shook his head and sighed. “Anhkora demons.”
“Whatever.”
“They’re releasing the boy this afternoon. After I help Anya get him settled I’ll pop by your house and we’ll go kill some demons.”
“Great.”
Later that evening Buffy was pacing the house.
“Buffy! There are two more hours to sundown. Chill out.”
“Oh, Dawn she’s just eager to wreak some vengeance for Xander. Or would it be for Anya? That’s funny, Buffy wreaking vengeance on behalf of a former vengeance demon. I can see it now, Anya going, ‘I wish…’”
“Willow!”
“Sorry, I forgot about the wishing.”
“It doesn’t matter, are you ready to go?”
“Where are you two going?”
“Dawn and I are going out for some ice cream. Do you want to go with us?”
“No, Spike is supposed to meet me here, I’ll wait.”
“Tara?”
“No sweetie, I want to look at this book Mr. Giles gave me. I want to find a better version of that spell I was trying to use the other night.”
“Hey, you’re not feeling guilty about Xander are you?”
“Not really, but I would feel better if I found a quicker version. It could be really helpful in the future.”
“Okay. Well guys, Dawn and I will see you later.”
Dawn and Willow left. Tara sat quietly at the kitchen table reading while Buffy sat restlessly tapping her fingers and sighing. “Buffy, is something bothering you?”
“Maybe. I mean yes.” Buffy told Tara what she had seen and overheard.
“Oh my. H-have you told anyone?”
“Of course not. Who could I tell? Willow would kill Anya and Giles would probably stake Spike. And Dawn’s just too young.”
“Have you asked them?”
“Oh my God, no.”
“Why not?”
“Right. ‘Excuse me, Anya why are you screwing Spike and by the way, Xander, did you know Spike loves you?’”
“How about Spike?”
“Spike?”
“Yes. You two have a special relationship. You trust him don’t you?”
There was a long pause. Finally Buffy said, “yes.”
They sat quietly some more. Just as Buffy was about speak, there was a knocking at the door. “Oh that’s Spike, I better go.”
“Just think about it.”
“I will.”
Later, Buffy was feeling a little bit sorry for the demons, as she and Spike went after them with a ferocity that left them both breathless. As they walked she said, “You uh wanna hang out at your crypt?”
He turned away from her and said evasively, “No, I have things going on. I’ll walk you back to your house though.”
“Actually, I was planning on dropping in on Anya and Xander, you can walk me there if you want.” ‘Take that!’ she thought.
“Ah Slayer, I’m not sure that’s such a good idea, what with Xander recovering and all…”
“Or is that where you were heading?”
He stopped and tried to give her that head tilt meant to convey his sincerity. It failed miserably. “What are you talking about?”
“Oh you know what I’m talking about. I saw you with her. I heard you with her. What the hell is going on?”
He stared at her. His eyes flashed briefly and he advanced upon her until her back was against a nearby tree. “What is it you think you saw?”
“You know what I saw. I saw you” her voice dropped to a whisper, “touching her.” She looked away from him then.
“Oh you did?” His voice was in her ear. He wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her against him. She could feel his lips against her neck, “did you like what you saw?” he hissed. “Did you wish it was you?” Buffy could feel her heart beating in her chest, her breath coming in shallow bursts. His tongue snaked out and it felt like fire against her neck. She involuntarily felt her arms reaching around his waist, under his jacket, under his tee shirt, feeling the muscled cool skin beneath the palms of her hand. Spike groaned and began insinuating his leg between hers, his jean-covered thigh rubbing against the seam of her jeans and sending shivers and heat running through her. She tilted her head back and looked up at him. Their eyes met and his lips came down on hers. They kissed, and kissed, and kissed, and it was pretty good but nothing special.
They broke apart and stared at each other. ‘Wow!’ Buffy thought, ‘I mean he’s a good kisser and all but after that initial heat it kind of fizzled out.’ “Well, uh, that was nice, I guess.”
“Nice?! That should have been bloody fantastic!”
“Yeah, it should have been, pent up emotions and all that.”
They stood there nodding looking awkwardly at each other.
“Well if that’s all you wanted…”
“Spike, no. You don’t love me anymore do you?”
“I suppose I don’t.”
“Did you ever?”
“Oh God Buffy, yes.”
“What happened?
He shrugged his shoulders and looked away. “Did you ever have any kind of feelings for me?”
She looked down. “Yes.”
“Could you have ever loved me?”
“Maybe.”
He nodded and started to walk away.
“Wait. What’s going on with Anya? Does Xander know?”
“Buffy, it’s not really my place to tell you.”
“Who’s place is it to tell me?’
He shrugged, “I don’t really know, but it’s not my secret alone.”
With that he turned, put his hands in his pockets and walked away into the night.
