Survival

Spike screamed at the paramedic, “what d’we do?”, “just keep moving, get him in the rig and I can work on him there” Spike nodded and started to run towards the ambulance, dragging the paramedic who was still holding the other end of the stretcher along. As they got to the ambulance the other paramedic had started the engine, opened the rear doors and was waiting to help them get Xander loaded. As they approached he heard the wail from the heart monitor and exchanged a grim look with his colleague that did not go unnoticed by Spike.

They got him loaded and the driver ran to the front of the ambulance, the one who had carried Xander with Spike gave him a quick once over “you riding with us?” Spike nodded mutely and moved to climb inside, remembering himself he turned to the rest of the Scoobies, particularly focused on Red. Her tear streaked face and the agony in her eyes seemed to be the reflection of his own, slowly she nodded and whispered “we’ll follow, talk to him, tell him he can’t leave me, us, you” “Hey man! We’re rolling!” the paramedic behind him shouted and Spike whirled and leapt into the ambulance, pulling the doors closed behind him as it started to move away.

The ride to Sunnydale General was torturous, Spike would have happily spent a millennia in hell than endure the sight of the paramedic forcing air into his boys lungs and forcing his heart to beat again. He’d wept when Xander’s heart had spluttered back into a shaky but there rythmn, the paramedic however wasn’t happy “good breath sounds on the right, nothing on the left” he shouted to the driver “what’s our ETA?!”, “I’m on it man, give me 2 more minutes and we’ll be there” the driver shouted back as he wrenched the wheel to the left and spike felt them mount the sidewalk. The rest of the ride was a blur, Xander’s eyes had flickered open for a few seconds, his gaze focusing on Spike before sliding closed again. Suddenly the ambulance pulled to a stop, the doors were wrenched open and ER doctors surrounded them, pulling the portable bed out of the ambulance, wheeling it into the ER in a rush of shouted orders, white coats and blue scrubs. Spike stood in the cold night air, tears drying on face and watched as the man he loved was surrounded by noise and movement and prayed to a God that he knew, if he existed wouldn’t listen to the prayers of a dammed soul like him. But he prayed for the soul of an innocent, a white knight and hoped against hope that someone would hear him and watch over Xander.

AN – OK, so I’ve set the scene I think, sorry for the short chapter but there are more chapters coming soon with a bit more of what we all want to see from our 2 favourite boys.
