Chapter Three – Greetings

****

Elizabeth was wandering aimlessly through the garden, her garden. The sun had set a little while ago but she enjoyed the early evening. It was well known how much the princess enjoyed the night, so torches were place all throughout the grounds.

The scent of night blooming jasmine filled her senses. All afternoon her thoughts revolved around one person…Rupert Giles. She couldn’t believe that he was staying for the entire summer. Giles presence around the castle was more than normal but not for such an extended period of time. In fact Buffy secretly hopped that he’d stay much longer than that.

A loud thud pulled her from her musings, she looked over to her right and just peering over one of the garden walls was the head grounds keeper, and a friend of hers, Richard Wilkins.

Though Richard was a very kind man, he did come off a bit…creepy. Buffy laughed inwardly, how she could possibly think such a sweet man had an evil/off bone in his body.

“Why, hello Princess. Lovely evening isn’t it?” he asked using his oh so cheerful voice

“That it is, I was wondering what are you doing? You know I don’t take kindly to visitors here.” She said

“Oh forgive me, your highness but a Sir Rupert Giles has arrived. In fact your mother and father were surprised that you weren’t there to greet him yourself. My lord sent me to fetch you.”

Buffy’s eyes widened as she remembered why her thoughts were filled with the Duke, more so than usually. “Oh my lord, Richard, do you have your horse here with you?”

Looking slightly puzzled, he replied a bit hesitantly “Yes milady, but whatever do you need with my horse?”

Buffy inhaled sharply, trying to calm herself and failing miserably. “I’ll never make it back fast enough by foot. I love this place because it’s so far off from the castle but right now it’s really a disadvantage.”

Richard eyes brightened with untandtanding and he smiled at the golden haired princess. “Of course, you’re welcome to my horse but there is no saddle, see I have no need for one but you…”

She waved off his concerns. “Don’t worry, I’ve been riding since I was five and I’m an excellent rider.”

“Aye I do know that much, alright just come ‘round and I’ll have the horse ready for you milady” he said and with that he disappeared behind the garden wall once more.

Buffy sprinted through the garden, finally reaching the moss covered steps she walked up them carefully, so as not to slip. Finally reaching the top she pushed the door open and the thick vines aside. Turning back only for a moment to lock the only door. She then turned and began to make her way out of the hedge maze that guarded her garden.

Eventually she reached the end where Richard waited with his horse, a beautiful white stallion.

Leading the horse over to the princess he handed her the ropes that passed off as the horse’s make-shift reins. “Here you are milady, careful now. He doesn’t spook easily but you best are careful none the less. It’s dark out now and the way back…well it isn’t all lit with torches and such”

Buffy mounted the horse with practice ease. She straddled the gentle beast knowing that if she rode the proper way it would take even longer to get back. She smiled her thanks and took off into a gallop.

As Richard watched her ride off into the night he couldn’t help but think that the princess was one of a kind and that his little Faith turned out to be just like her.

William Penning found himself in his library with his wife and long time friend Rupert, trying to make excuses for his daughter’s tardiness. No matter how much he loved his sweet bumblebee, she sometimes aggravated him to no end.

His wife assured him that Buffy would be on time for supper…and where was she. No one knew, not one of his servants knew where is daughter was on this vast estate. Even her attendant Wesley and best friend and lady in waiting, Willow didn’t know where she was.

It was long past sun set and he was beginning to worry. Rupert seemed to notice his King’s distressed expression and tried to ease his fears.

“I’m sure she’ll be along soon. Buffy never was one for punctuality.” He said with a slight chuckle.

William smiled at this, he knew how his daughter could be and it delighted him to no end that Rupert found most of his daughter’s traits endearing or adorable, whereas others would find them appalling or just plain rude.

Joyce laughed at this; she also knew how her daughter could be. “Yes well, she did promise to be home…on time for once. Of course she had to go be and late”

“I’m sure she’s be detained with good reason. Perhaps something required her immediate attention; she is the princess after all” Rupert trying to be the voice of reason while also trying to defend his love.

Just as William was about to respond, the large doors to one of the outer rooms opened and footsteps could be heard. The trio turned toward the mahogany doors of the library as the slightly disheveled princess entered. Buffy turned to face them and smiled sheepishly.

“Hello Father, hello Mother” she said with a slight bow. Then her gaze turned toward Rupert she tried to greet him as she did her parents, she failed horribly. “Hello Rupert” came her breathy greeting.

Rupert beamed at the sight of her. He still couldn’t believe that this extraordinary young woman was to be his…that was if she’d have him. Though any man could take any women for his bride to be, he would never force marriage upon her. He loved her too much to do such a thing to her. He promised himself long ago that if Buffy was going to be by his side, in his bed then she would do so willingly. She would belong to him willingly.

Giles rose gracefully from his position across from the William and strode over to his princess. He smiled at her and kissed her cheek before pulling her into his embrace which she immediately warmed to. Eventually they pulled back from one another but neither made a move from the embrace. From across the room William and Joyce shared a knowing glance.

“Well there is much to be done before it is time to retire, we will leave you two now. Come my queen and Elizabeth…do behave”

Buffy smiled at the small warning “Goodnight Father, Mother”

“Goodnight Darling” with that Joyce pulled William from the room

Giles looked down at the golden girl in his arms. Her looks alone was so different from the normal, whereas many had pale alabaster skin, Buffy’s was kissed by the sun, a beautiful tan color always graced her features even during the winter when the sun was never out.

“It’s so good to see you again, love. I’ve missed you.”

Buffy looked up into his eyes and knew that she could easily get lost in them. So she stepped out of the embrace but didn’t go very far.

“I’ve missed you as well. You have no idea how lonely it can become here. There really isn’t anyone who I can talk to. Oh I know have Willow, it’s not the same as talking to you” She turned back to face him to find a small smile on his lips.

“Look at me going on and on about myself. I haven’t seen you in months, what on earth have you been up to. Any new adventures I should know of.”

Giles laughed at this. “No I must say life in Wellington has been relatively quiet. That’s the one thing I always miss and love at the same time when I leave here. I love the quiet but I also miss all the excitement”

She smiled at this; Buffy loved how her Giles is one walking contradiction just like herself. “It has been extremely eventful around here the past few months, some suitors have come calling on me. I find all of them terrible dull and incorrigible. All they do is talk about themselves and their money and titles and who has more power. I care for none of it, I do know that I am a princess and with it comes responsibility but when I marry, I want it to be for love not out of convenience or who is worth more” she turned toward her life long friend her face a mix of confusion, determination and if possible love?

Giles just smiled softly. “Well I should think that you’d only marry for love, that’s they way it should be. Though I doubt you’ll find many a young man who won’t go on and on about his wealth and power. I fear that they are trying to impress you and all they really accomplish is turning you off” At this her face fell. He instantly felt pang go through his heart at her pained expression. “Oh don’t be upset, I believe that there is the perfect someone for you, out there somewhere you just have to find them.”

At this she smiled shyly at him. All Buffy wanted to do at that moment was say that that someone was him but she just couldn’t. What if he rejected her or worse just said that she was nothing but a little girl and not nearly good enough for him. So she just smiled at him and answered. “That’d be nice, though I hope I find him soon, for my father is going to have stroke if I don’t marry soon”

Rupert was about to say something in response when a polite knock on the door and a meek brown haired, fair skinned girl peered through the door.

“Milady” she greeted her with a bow “Dinner is being served and both yours and the Duke’s presence is required”

Elizabeth smiled at the girl, Fred was actually older than Elizabeth by about three years but it didn’t show. She came to work here as one of Elizabeth’s attendants a few weeks ago and has been here ever since.

“Thank you, Fred. Tell my father we will be there shortly” With that Buffy turned back to Giles

“Well my princess, shall we go to dinner” Giles offered his arm in a gentlemanly fashion as they left the study and began to travel down one of the many long corridors of the castle.

Elizabeth’s scent filled his senses, she smelled of sunshine, vanilla and honey. The combined scents were intoxicating; he just couldn’t seem to get enough. He was so lost in his musings he never heard his darling girl’s question.

“hmm?”

“I asked if you’d like to join me tomorrow in the garden” she looked up at him a hopeful expression graced her features.

“Of course, I’d love to”

Neither noticed the once soft caring eyes that looked upon the princess become full of rage as they fell on the Duke. The shadow backed away filled with anger, he swore to himself that the princess would be his and she would be...Rupert Giles was going to have to be eliminated.
