Chapter 23: Love´s Price
Chapter 23: Love’s Price
It took a little while to gather all that was needed. Willow and Clem were busy finding the different ingredients, as the watcher placed the components they handed him in the proper order according to the spell’s specifications.
Dawn and Xander were sitting close to Buffy. As Drussilla approached the couch, Dawn called to her.
“Can I ask you something?”
“Yes, you can, if I answer it’s a different thing altogether”.
“It’s just that I’m confused. You said you don’t have a soul, and you feel no guilt about what you did, but you are helping”.
“I don’t believe like you do, but I do believe that The Balance must be maintain, that’s the reason why I help”.
Giles became interested in the conversation. “The Balance?”
2Yes, there is a balance in the world between good and evil, both are needed, but one must not override the other”.
“You believe evil is necessary?” Xander was astonished at that, “But you are not evil anymore”.
“You do not understand, I’m not talking about my preferences or my inclinations, I’m speaking of the need both for good and evil in the universe”.
“Explain this, please, why would evil be necessary?” Giles wanted to know, though he suspected he already knew the answer.
“There is no life without both. Perfect good would lead to death just as perfect evil would. There would be stagnation of life without the fight for survival”.
Dawn was getting bored of the philosophical turn the conversation had taken. “But Spike felt guilt before the soul”.
“He did?” Everyone wanted to know.
“Yes, why do you think he went to get one?”
Drussilla was incredulous. “He got his soul intentionally?”
Willow and Clem had gotten closer to the others during their talk.
“Yes, he fought for it”. Willow said. “Buffy told me about it, and I recall he said there had been trials when she asked about it”.
“You have memories of that but you were not there?” Drussilla said. “I can fell other memories in you. Do you have memories of before, of the reason for the soul maybe?”
Willow was uncomfortable sharing that with the vampiress. “Yes, he hurt Buffy, he felt guilty, he wanted to make sure it would never happen again”.
“I can not believe that. I knew he was especial, but never a vampire has done something like that, especially one that knew what was the price”.
“The price?” Dawn asked.
“He saw Angelus, he knew what was possible, the torment a soul involves”. Drussilla was pensive for a long moment after that. “Maybe there’s a stronger reason for all this, there must be. I would need a moment alone before the spell. I’ll go outside. Please get ready so we can start immediately upon my return”.
With that she left the others and the house. Dawn could see her from the window. She was standing under the stars, moving softly from side to side, almost as if she was dancing to silent music.
