Epilogue

5 years later

Children’s laughter rang throughout the room as Xander leaned casually against the doorjamb, crossing his arms and watching with a slight smile. It was almost time for them to go; they were going to have to run to make it to the plane in time to get to LA, as it was. Xander didn’t want to rush him, though, knowing how important these visits were to his lover.

Spike was crouched over, working on what looked like a small train, up to his knees and elbows in children of all ages. Children that had been pale and lethargic but were now flushed with bright eyes and happy smiles crawled all over the laughing blonde and Xander watched the familiar sight tenderly. They were at the local Children’s Hospital, one of the ones they went to with some frequency, though they tried to visit at least one a month. They donated a great deal of money per year to the institutions but Spike enjoyed going and visiting, seeing them smile and making them laugh.

When bright, happy blue eyes flashed up at his from the middle of the floor, he smiled back at Spike and nodded towards the clock, letting him know that they had to wrap it up soon. Willow and Angel might not be upset if they came stumbling in hours late, but this was one party they didn’t want to be late to.

Spike nodded back and turned his attention to the small redhead in his lap, hugging her gently as he murmured something in her ear that made her duck her head shyly against his shoulder and giggle. Watching Spike, he wondered if anyone else realized that these visits did the blonde as much good as they did the children. When Spike glanced back up at him with soft, soft eyes, Xander smiled gently in understanding, his heart aching as he looked over the tiny, fragile girl.

While most of the kids they saw were recovering or in the midst of some illness, a few each time were from abusive homes and were simply there until they healed and someone figured out where to put them. It was those children that Spike seemed to be drawn to every time, the ones who fought and argued, kicked and bit, then closed up inside themselves and couldn’t meet anyone’s eyes.

He was good for them and Xander knew he hated that he could only see them once or twice before the system swallowed them whole, only the very lucky ones going to a family member or family friend. Mouthing, ‘Soon’, to Spike, his heart swelled even more at the smile he got in response.

They had talked about it often, children. Either a surrogate or adoption was fine with him. It would be a few more years, though, until Spike was ready to retire, because neither wanted to raise a child in the hectic life they lead. And hectic it was.

The past five years had been a whirlwind but he didn’t regret a moment of it. Surprisingly, their kiss at the airport hadn’t gotten back to any of the news stations, so it was a shocked world that had watched when Spike won the NASCAR cup series a month later and crawled from the car to his arms, kissing him deeply and passionately in front of thousands live and millions across the nation. Xander had been shocked, too, but hadn’t been complaining.

The aftershocks hadn’t been as bad as either had expected, and though they did drop a few sponsors and probably a few fans, they gained more, much more. Theirs was the official romance of the sport now, even though more than one couple had come out publicly afterwards. There were always the rumors in the tabloids and occasional threatening letter, but all in all, the world accepted and embraced.

Spike himself had changed a little over the years, Xander realized as he watched his lover say goodbye to the kids and promise to come back next month. Gone was the cocky, brash attitude, the ‘this is how I am and if you don’t like it, fuck you’ façade of an attitude he had had when Xander had met him and in its place was a calmer confidence that drew people to him. Those mischievous and stubborn blue eyes were the same, though, and still caused him to want to throttle the man more often than not.

The blonde was quiet as they walked out the front doors and Xander draped an arm over his shoulder and hugged him close to his side, not bothering to try to get him to talk about it. Spike did as much as he could, but he knew more than most what those kids were facing as they grew up and it always bothered him a few days after each visit. Xander knew well that even after they adopted their own child, because as much as they tossed around the idea of surrogacy, he knew they would end up at one of these hospitals a few years from now and a certain child would steal Spike’s heart and that would be it, but Xander knew well that even after Spike had his own to focus on, these children would still haunt him. It was just yet another thing to love him for.

Before they boarded their small plane, he reached over and tilted Spike’s face up to his, kissing him softly. “One more month,” he murmured and the blonde’s face lit up, chasing away the lingering shadows for now.

The party in LA was Willow and Angel’s engagement party, Angel having wanted to wait until Willow was done with school completely before they thought about marriage. It was also Spike and Xander’s. Homosexual marriage had become legal in more than a few states over the past couple years, but they hadn’t wanted to rush into it, both of them having been scarred by their past enough to want to make sure.

Oz and Gunn had been one of the very first couples married after the announcement, with them standing up for the couple, and though Xander had proposed a few months later, they had both agreed they wanted to wait a few years. After Angel and Willow finally set a date, Spike had glanced over at him and said it was time, the other couple being more than happy with a double wedding.

They had never been bothered by Ian again, though when an English reporter had asked about his son’s upcoming marriage, the older man had exploded, saying a lot of things that had him totally blacklisted across Europe. Spike hadn’t even blinked at the news, simply responding with the fact that his father’s approval or disapproval had long since ceased to matter.

Pulling the bouncing, jittery blonde into his lap and kissing him deeply while they waited for their pilot to get ready to take off, Xander had never been more grateful to have met the antagonistic, cocky pain in the ass that Spike had been, and still was occasionally. His life had never been the same since that day but he wouldn’t have had it any other way.

“Love you,” Spike murmured against his lips as he started to wriggle off his lap to sit in the seat beside him, the plane starting to move, but Xander held him tight a moment longer, staring up into those bright blue eyes.

“Love you, too, baby. Love you, too.”
