Chapter 21: A Matter of Soul

Chapter 21: A Matter of Soul

After food was served and a special tea prepared to help buffy fight her exhaustion, Drussilla began to speak.

“Perhaps you already know this, but I was not always mad”. Drussilla began her explanation looking at the others, who had settled at the table.

“You were not?” Giles was extremely interested in her story, all were listening with interest except for Angel, he was standing in a corner and looking out the window.

“I was not. I had my visions, yes, but I was sane.
Darla and Angelus were in town, he took, how shall I put it… a fancy for me. He killed my family and ultimately caused my madness”.

Everyone turned to Angel, who looked ashamed. “I didn’t have a soul then”.

“Like that excuses everything”. Dawn was tired of the old soul argument. “Spike didn’t have a soul either when he left a god torture him for me and Buffy”.

Angel looked at Buffy then. “What’s she talking about, why is everyone going on and on about Spike?”

“Not now Angel, please”.

“Yes now, I don’t understand why you all keep defending him and crying over him, so he is dead, in hell as he should be. You need to take him out to save you, why? You are awake now and except for tired you look fine to me. Can someone explain this?”

Dawn got up. “I’ll explain this to you!”

“Dawn…”

“No Buffy, someone needs to tell him, and I will.
It’s like this, Angel. Spike saved the world. Buffy loves him, I love him, we all do. He is suffering in hell, even though he is a Champion, and he does NOT deserve that!!
And Buffy is being pulled there with him because they shared their souls. Is that clear enough for you!”

Angel was speechless. “And the cookie analogy?” He asked Buffy.

“I’m sorry Angel, but I’m all done”.

“And I’m sorry too. I hope Spike chokes on his cookies”. He said, but his tone was not angry, and he gave Buffy a small smile, which she returned gratefully. “I have only one more question for you, Buffy. Are you perchance chocolate chip? Because I never like those any way”

Buffy laughed at that and went to his side, embracing him. “Thank you”. The joke was a lame one, but it meant a lot to her that he tried.

“I only want you to be happy”.

“I know, and I want you to be happy as well. In fact,” she said exchanging a look with Dawn, who went into the living room, “I want you to be extremely happy, perfectly happy even”.

Xander looked at her as if she had turned mad. “Buffy, be careful what you say, that road leads to badness, you know, the soulless kind?”

“Not any more, this is from Spike”. Dawn said as she returned, giving the second page of her sister’s letter to Angel.
The vampire couldn’t believe his eyes. He turned to Willow and gave her the paper. “Could it work?”

“Yes, this is great! And it’s so simple, how did we not find it before?”

“Can I see it?” Willow passed the paper to Drussilla. “Yes, it’s simple. As is the reason why you could not find it”.

“How’s that?”

“You wouldn’t have. This spell can only be found if you look for it out of love for another. As you don’t love Angel, it would have been impossible for you to find it”.

Willow was confused, “But I love Buffy”.

“Not like that, child. She is your friend, yes, but that’s a different kind of love”.

“Could Buffy have found it?” The witch wanted to know.
“Probably yes, at that time, but she doesn’t understand magicks, it would have been difficult for her”.

Now Buffy was confused. “But how did Spike find it then, he knew nothing of magicks”.

“Yes he did”. They all looked at Xander as he spoke. “He must have known. He once told me that magic always has consequences. Will has told me the same, and Tara always used to say that. So that means he knew something about magic”.

“When did he tell you that”. The witch asked.

Xander looked at Buffy then, he was still sorry for what they’ve done to her. “It was just after you came back… you know, when we found you in your house. He left, and later I found him crying outside. He was mad because we had not told him about bringing you back, and he said magic always has consequences”.

No one said anything after that, until Angel spoke again.
“Willow, do you thing Wesley could manage the spell?”

“Yes, as I said, it’s very simple, he should have no problem with it.”
“Then I’ll take it to him, we can do it in LA”. He looked at Buffy, “I’ll be going now, if you don’t need me. The sun’s down and it’s time”.

She smiled, and nodded.

“But don’t you want to know how she got sane and all?” Xander asked the vampire, moving his head towards Drussilla.

“I think I already know. You are with Sleader?” he asked facing her.

“Yes”.

“Then there’s nothing else I need to know. Tell Whistler I said Hi.”

“I will. Take care Angel. It is forgiven, and forgotten.”

“I’ll never forget”.

“But you are forgiven nonetheless”.

Angel approached Drussilla and made a reverence. “Thank you”.

He kissed the hand the vampiress extended and turned to the door. Opening it he said without looking back. “You know were to find me”.
