Chapter 20: Did You Know?
They had finished the letters. Buffy and Dawn were holding hands and murmuring to each other, they had both wanted the other to read their letter.
Buffy had cried more with Dawn’s than with her own. She said quietly to her sister. “You’ll see him again”.
“I want to make things better”. Dawn said, teary eyed.
“You will”.
Giles moved closer to the couch and handed Buffy his letter. There was silence all around as she read it. Her eyes kept getting bigger. As she was nearing the end, Giles turned to Angel, his voice was glacial.
“You are to surrender Spike’s state to me”.
Angel swallowed loudly. “Ok, I haven’t touched it, it’s still managed by the same firm in England”.
Clem interrupted. “I have papers for that, they came with the letters”.
Angel asked for them. “This are in order, I’ll sign them immediately”.
He passed the papers to Giles who sat abruptly and gasped as he read the total amount.
“He had a Billion dollars?”
Drussilla chose that moment to speak. “He was a peer of the realm when he was alive. He wasn’t terribly rich, but he’s family was very comfortable”.
Everybody was listening to the vampiress as she continued.
“His father had died, as had his younger sister. It was only his mother and William. He took care of her as she had consumption. When I turned him, we went back to his house. He wanted to turn his mother, so they could be together forever. But she changed, of course, and hurt him terribly; he had to end her life. The demon was not his mother, you see, his mother was already gone”.
“The trigger” Xander said almost to himself.
Giles agreed with him. “Yes, that was probably it”.
“He was a poet, did you know that” Drussilla was looking at Buffy, but Dawn answered instead.
“They didn’t know that. But he told me once. He let me read one”
“He never showed me. He must have loved you a lot”
“What I don’t understand is why Angel had control of his money”. Asked Willow.
Before Angel had time to respond, Drussilla answered. “He took it when he lost his soul. Spike was in a wheel chair and Angel said he may need it. You never gave it back?”
“It was Spike”. Angel said as way of explanation.
Buffy was confused. “But a billion dollars?”
Giles explained. “If he had money when he died and let it alone to be invested… it’s a lot of time”.
“Whoa, we had a billionaire vampire and we didn’t even know it”.
“He left money for all of us, Xander. Dawn, Willow, you and Me” Buffy said, her voice breaking a little. “He wanted us to be safe. He also left money for the new Council”.
Everyone was quiet after that. Until suddenly Xander stood up and pointed to the vampiress. “You are not crazy!!”
As all eyes turned to her, Drussila smiled. “You are a real sharp one. No, I’m very sane thank you. I believe is time for some of those explanations, but is almost midday, perhaps you would like to get some sleep…”
“NO!!” All the scoobies shouted as one. Giles explained. “Buffy can’t sleep, she’ll fall into a coma again”.
“I forgot, of course she can’t. So we’ll talk some more. Maybe you’ll like to eat something while I explain? And I’m sure the witch here has some herbs that may help the Slayer.
Xander and Clem agreed quickly with her. The others decided more calmly that it was a good idea, so the group relocated to the kitchen.
