Breathing hard, his ankle throbbing and back burning, Xander arrived in the ark room. With a grim look on his face he started up the Ark and nodded to Reaper as he and his sister ran in a few minutes later. Reaper went first through the ark, then his sister, Xander went last. Stepping into the floating liquid Xander gasped as it sucked him in, he hated his ride, it made this stomach iffy. Landing on the other side Xander fell down to his knees with a hand over his mouth. There was nothing in his stomach so all he did was gag a bit and wipe spit from his mouth.
Getting up Xander stared wide-eyed at the mess before him. At the bodies, at the destroyed equipment. The room was silent except for the sound of Portman’s voice on the computer speakers. The smell of blood reached Xander’s nose like a thick cheep perfume, it made his eyes water. Snorting Xander met Reaper’s regretful eyes. This was just one big bloody slaughter. Xander ran behind Reaper as the man tried to get a hold of Sarge.
“Sarge what’s your position?”
“Sarge do you copy?!”The damn man wasn’t answering his com. With Sam kept between them they followed the sound of gun fire and shrieking.
“Hear you loud and clear.” Sarges voice came through the coms, the sound of shooting and screaming in the background.
“Sarge don’t kill everybody! They’re not all infected.”
“Copy that.” Sarge’s voice was calm but it bothered Xander that he just didn’t seam interested in the information. They found Sarge and an unhappy looking Destroyer next to a pile of dead bodies in a open hall.
Sam strode up to Sarge like he wasn’t a big man hold a gun and got into his face. “ You don’t have to kill all of them. I don’t think everyone is infected, or even capable of being infected.”
Sarge cocked his head to the side like he was talking too an especially young and stupid child. “We have orders to contain this threat by and means necessary.”
“So lets evacuate the uninfected . . .and blow this place to hell.” Reaper locked eyes with Sarge a challenging glare on his face. Standing next to Reaper and Sam, Xander made sure to stay close. He could see a madness in Sarge’s eyes that reminded him of Drusilla. And not in a nice ‘I talk to the stars’ type of way, more like the ‘I want to play jump rope with your intestines’ type a way. Xander’s inner predator was telling him to kill this big man who was a great threat to his pack or back off. Xander wasn’t really sure which one he was capable or willing to do.
“And we have orders to protect this facility.” Sarge hissed, his eyes narrowing at the soldiers in-front of him.
“We don’t have orders to KILL innocent people.” Reaper said calmly as he tried to get through to Sarge.
“We have to stop anything from getting to the surface . . . by any mean . . .necessary.” Sarge was sounding like a broken recording, one that didn’t have any sort of off button.
“Those were the orders Sir . . .BUT we were brought here to protect the civilians!!” Xander didn’t realized he had spoken till Sarge was in his face and had him by his collar.
“You follow orders soldier!!! If you want to play hero, do it on your own time. Do I make myself clear.”
Xander glared as he tried to get out of Sarge’s hold. His inner selves were having a fit being his close to an enemy. Xander blinked. When did Sarge become the enemy? That’s when Xander notice the placement of his gun. The barrel was just under Sarge’s neck . . . and Xander’s finger was on the trigger . . . Xander could solve their problem right there with just one shot. Just when Xander was going to make a decision Duke’s voice sounded from down the hall.
“Found this chicken shit hiding in a pile of dead bodies.” Sarge released Xander. Xander let out a breath he didn’t know he had been holding. Still standing by Sarge Xander listen with half an ear as Pinky the half man wonder simpered and gave Sarge a half assed explanation on what happened in the ark room. Xander figured that was the only reason Sarge hadn’t shot the whiny gimp on sight.
“Am I glad to see you guys!” Pinky said with fake cheer as Samantha walked over and started inspecting the man’s neck. “That thing cut right through the door. I tried to use the grenade but it came at me too fast. Followed me through the ark and started to kill everybody. It was horrible.”
Xander could just imagine it. Pinky hopping out the ark and belting away without a word to anyone else. After-all Pinky’s wheels didn’t look particularly fast, and it would have been easier for him to move without all the healthier younger people in his way. Pinky didn’t have a scratch on him, any blood on him was from someone else. Xander snorted in distaste.
“There’s no wound on his neck. He’s clean.” Said Sam happily. She was probably the only one happy that they really didn’t have to kill Pinky.
“I say who’s clean . . .and who’s not.” Said Sarge as he cocked his gun. He had a ‘pissed off I mean business’ look on his face as he started toward Pinky.
“I mean, it wasn’t my fault. Hey, I’m not a soldier. You shouldn’t have left me-” Pinky whined. Sarge lifted his weapon and prepared to fire. But like before another interruption happened.
“SARGE!!” The Kid came barreling over, he was panting. “There’s a storeroom to the south. Its got, like, 20 people holed up inside of it. We got to do something.” The Kid looked hopefully at Sarge, worry for the people he had left defenseless shining through.
“Your orders were to clear that sector! Is it clear?” Xander stood by Sarge, the man was radiating anger. Looking at Kid Xander tried to get the guy to meet his eye. ‘Lie.’ He begged mentally. Sarge didn’t strike Xander as a man that took being defied lightly. And so far half of what is left of the squad is arguing with him.
“No, I told them to stay put. They’re ok. Just scared shitless.” Xander cursed himself for not being born with telepathy.
Sarge took a step froward tell he was shoulder to shoulder with Xander, he had a condescending frown on his face. “ We kill them all. Let God sort them out.” He said that like it was the simplest and best thing they as soldiers could do.
Kid looked at Sarge like he didn’t know the man. Xander felt the same way. Sure his months of training and learning under the mans teaching never happened . . .but he still felt betrayed. Sarge was supposed to be the MAN! The guy that took control when they were in the shit. The leader that got them all out alive and untarnished. Yeah, Sarge’s plan would get them out alive . . .but the untarnished part . . .Innocent blood was not something Xander was planing on covering his vamp dust soaked hands with. Not ever if he could help it.
Kid shook his head. “T-this is wrong. I don’t think-”
Sarge glared at the younger soldier in-front of him. “Son you don’t think!! That’s an order!”
Xander snorted, and wondered if Sarge knew how stupid that sounded. ‘Like ordering a man not to think is going to stop him from doing so. I bet the government would love to have soldiers that could do just that. Hmm. Maybe they already have one.’Thought Xander as he eyed the big man talking to the Kid.
Sarge gave Xander a glare before focusing on Kid again. ‘Man it must be pick on the new recruits day and no one told me!’ If Sarge could spit fire he probably would.
“We’re in the field SOLDIER!!!” The big man said those words like they were supposed to mean something special. Like it was all that should matter to them.
Reaper seamed to know what Sarge meant because he had a frustrated look on his face. His hazel eyes were ablaze with dark emotion. “Sarge if nothings found them-”
Sarge kept wheedling at Kid like he hadn’t even heard Reaper. “You will obey the direct order . . . of your commanding officer.” The ‘or else’ hung in the air like a living thing.
Xander bit his lip as he looked from Sarge to Kid to his gun. This was just getting out of hand! Kid could defuse the whole situation if he just did what Sarge said. Xander didn’t want Kid to kill the survivors . . . but maybe he could go back to them and guard them! The longer everyone spent arguing the more they became sitting ducks! Everyone shifted a bit waiting for Kid to answer.
“No.” Kid shook his head, his eyes clear with the knowledge that he was doing the right thing.
“NOW!!” Sarge practically roared.
“Go to hell!!!” The Kid said in a strong voice as he stepped away from the squad. Xander smirked and felt pleased as well as worried for his fellow recruit, the other man had never talk to Sarge in such a way. Xander looked at Sarge to see the man’s expression. Steam was probably coming out of his ears.
Xander’s smile dropped like a baby bird falling out of the damn nest. One could almost hear his lips fall. He watched as Sarge’s weapon slowly raised . . . He noticed that everyone had their eyes on the Kid . . . none were really paying Sarge any attention. And with that same agonizing slow motion Xander yelled out and tackled Sarge. The sound of the gun going off by his ear echoed in Xander’s brain.
