The Gift of Death
She was held suspended above the earth, seeming to float for an indefinite amount of time on the multicolored waves of energy.
Every moment of her life seemed to play at warp speed before her eyes up to the act of her jumping into the portal that could destroy everything she held so dear, and she knew this should alert her to her eminent death.
She was ready. This is what it meant to be a slayer. She was only too happy to be able to save her sister, her friends, her world one last time. She understood now that death was truly her gift.
She allowed her eyes to close…she smiled sadly…and she fell from her lofty place knowing not an ounce of pain only a peace unprecedented.

DREAM UNTO REALITY
Waking slowly, her body stretched fully as her eyes blinked open Buffy smiled hearing outside her door, “You know once in a while you could make sure there is something ready for me to eat before school, Buffy! Shesh, did Mom teach you nothing?” and the unmistakable sound of her sister stomping down the stairs, presumably to get breakfast for herself.
Smile freezing in place on her face Buffy sits up quickly looking around her room to see that nothing had changed but shakes her head in confusion knowing that none of it should be real. Sliding out of bed the petite slayer moves to the mirror on her closet door to take in that nothing was different about her appearance either, and she was even wearing her yummy sushi pajamas.
Confused beyond belief as she knows that she should be dead and obviously is not if she is waking up from the best night’s sleep ever, in her own bed at that the slayer runs a hand through her sleep-mussed hair before saying softly to herself, “So, if I am not dead than what the hell happened? Is glory gone? Is everyone else ok? Shit, what the hell is going on?”
Shaking her head in frustration Buffy exits her room to hurriedly make her way downstairs in order to call Giles, but first she had to see Dawn. Maybe her sister knew something she didn’t, but even if Dawn only looked at her like she was crazy Buffy felt inclined to sweep the teen up in the biggest slayer style hug ever!

Gaping at her sister, her currently 16 year old sister as Dawn finishes explaining the details of their lives since the fall of Glory, two years before, Buffy can do nothing more then stare incredulously.
Dawn seeing this, as she had several times before now sighs, rolls her eyes and picks up the phone to dial Giles hoping that this time the ex-Watcher had some clue as to her sister’s reoccurring amnesia.
Speaking quietly into the phone Dawn turns away from Buffy after seeing the silent tears begin to fall from her eyes just as they had each time her sister had woken up without any recollection of the events after Glory’s defeat until Dawn had explained it all to her once again.
Going over in her mind what had transpired this morning, Buffy replays walking into the kitchen, sweeping Dawn up into a hug to beat all hugs and her sister’s reaction of, “Aw shit Buff, not again.” She had set Dawn back down thinking to scold her for swearing when she saw in her sister’s eyes something she didn’t expect…sincere worry and…sadness.
Dawn had asked her then, “What do you remember, Buffy?” in such a way that the confused slayer knew that something was seriously wrong with her if Dawn was jumping straight to THAT point.
The slayer had relayed what she remembered up to jumping from the tower then asked, “What, did the fall put me in a coma or something? And what is up with you looking all…mature, Dawn. Just how long was I out of it, anyway?”
Her sister had insisted she sit down then proceeded to explain what had happened beginning with Buffy’s leap into the portal.
It seems that Willow had watched as the slayer jumped and in an act of desperation the redhead grabbed her girlfriend’s hand to enhance her power to levitate Buffy to the ground once she had cleared the portal’s energy. Settling Buffy to the ground Willow had released Tara’s hand, and run to her best-friend only to find that Buffy was unconscious though otherwise seemed no worse for wear after battling Glory.
Dawn went on to say that yes, Buffy had been in a coma but only for three days at which time she woke up demanding to know how it was that she wasn’t dead or at least massively crippled after such a fall.
Buffy understood from what Dawn had told her that at the time she did not show any sign of amnesia nor any other mental or physical wound bad enough to keep her in the hospital and so Willow, Tara and Dawn had taken her home after a total of five days in that dreaded place.
It was about three months later that Buffy had awakened one morning only to come downstairs and hug Dawn much like she had this morning but it was Buffy herself who asked, “What the hell had happened with Glory and why couldn’t she remember?” Since that first time it had happened a total of eight times over a two year span of time and this was the ninth time that Buffy had woken up not remembering anything past jumping into the portal.
Shaking her head in miserable disbelief Buffy swipes at her tears as Dawn hangs up the phone saying, “Well, Giles is expecting us in an hour at the shop, Buff so why don’t you go shower and I’ll make you an omelet, ok?”
Still in shock from the revelation of her memory loss the older Summers woman nods morosely heading out of the kitchen when suddenly she stops to look back at Dawn who is leaning into the refrigerator and she questions, “When did you learn how to cook, Dawnie?”
Straightening to look back at her sister, Dawn shakes her head saying, “You ask that every time, Buff and the answer never changes. I learned to cook after so many failed cooking attempts on your part. Now, I’ll tell you more later over your favorite; Ham, cheese and veggie omelet with a side of whole wheat toast. For now, go shower, K?”
Nodding once more, her face a study of confusion Buffy heads upstairs to shower and ready herself for meeting with Giles who hopefully will know how to deal with this dilemma...again?
