I do not own Buffy the Vampire Slayer (BtVS), nor any of the characters from it. I do not make any money from the writing of this story.
Of Birds and Slayers
Of Birds and Slayers
Set in the middle of season 7, Kennedy and Willow aren’t together, the all gang lives at the Summers’ place. The war against the First is still ragging. None of anything I don’t own is mine I must add before you read. For those who know my style, yeah, there’s still songs for the background. Sorry guys! And well..I guess you'll find some likeness with my other stories + references to my fav show ever (I let you guess which one.)
So, here it goes...
It was a dark foggy night, in a dark foggy scary graveyard, and the Slayer was smirking to herself thinking about the group of hormonal and dreadful teenagers who where with her. It was their third school outing, or rather slayer outing, and they were still shivering at every suspect sound around. Buffy stopped and turned around to face the potentials.
“Okay girls, it’s time to split.” she declared calmly “ I want three groups of four potentials, one goes with Willow and Xander, another with me and the last will go with Spike...” A chorus of groaning came from the group. Spike sighed and lit a cig.
“We’re gonna patrol in different areas of the graveyard, if some Bringers attack, give us a signal and we’ll come.” The blond girl ordered.
“What’s the signal?” Rona asked.
“Uh...I guess your screams will be loud enough for us to hear.” Buffy replied casually, which made Rona’s face fall. The young girl felt someone patting her shoulder. It was Kennedy.
“Don’t worry, you’re an expert of this kind of signal, you’ll be good!” the older potential grinned. The three groups quickly split and started to patrol. After two hours, they still hadn’t find any vampires or whatever which could be dangerous...Well, Vi had tried to slay a black cat who looked evil to her, but she had gotten a deadly glare from Buffy and removed her stake in her pocket in super speed. They all met in the middle of the graveyard with crestfallen faces.
“Nothing” Willow sighed, sitting on a tombstone.
“Ditto” Spike shrugged.
“Looks like the bad guys have a party somewhere...It’s a shame that I didn’t get invited!” Buffy pretended to be offended. “Alright, let’s call this a night and let’s go back -”
“Listen!” Kennedy said, interrupting the Slayer. There were sounds of people walking or rather running through the graveyard. The all group got closer from where the sounds were coming from and stopped dead in their tracks when they saw a dozen of Bringers standing there in circle. They were surrounding someone. Buffy stepped ahead, but Willow caught her arm.
“Wait, there’s something wrong.” The red head was frowning. Her blond friend gave her a questioning gaze but remained silent. Willow looked closer and watched the figure standing in the middle of the Bringers. It was a girl. A short brunette with a ponytail, wearing a black baggy and a black tank top. But something with this girl was not right, the witch could feel it in her body.
“Will, are you sure we shouldn’t intervene? This girl may be a potential, and she’s about to get ripped out by those guys!” Xander exclaimed. Suddenly, the girl began to speak.
(Nine inch Nail feat Marilyn Manson – Gave up)
“Oh, poor little me, encircled by ugly blind guys with sharp knives!” she said mockingly. The Bringers were still pacing around her. “But guess what guys! I have knives too!” And all of a sudden, three long blades went out of each of the girl’s fists, from the junctions between her fingers. She extended her arms and kept the Bringers at bay. Several meters away, the Scooby gang was staggered, waiting for what was coming next.
“You want me? Come on! Take me!” The brunette shouted at the Bringers who finally attacked her. The girl threw her blades in the faces of two Bringers who were trying to stab her by her sides. Then she ran towards another one, leant heavily on his head, broke her neck with her foot and flung toward a Bringer whom she quickly beheaded. Buffy suddenly had difficulties to swallow.
‘Four Bringers in ten seconds! She beat up my own score.’ The blond slayer thought. She almost fainted when she saw the teenager execute a back flip, catch a knife thrown by a Bringer with her foot and return it against another guy who was trying to kill her from behind. In two minutes there were only three Bringers left. One died eviscerated, the second had her head crashed against a tombstone, and the last one landed on the ground, half of his body bleeding a few meters away. The girl walked toward him calmly, drawing in the metal claws. She knelt next to him, he was choking with his own blood. She stared at him several seconds with a look where sadness and hate were mixed. Then she put her fist above the Bringer’s heart and spread out the blades in her hand, putting an end to the guy’s convulsions. The brunette stood up and drew in the blades once again, she walked toward a grave and picked up a black Eastpack. Then she turned her head in the gang’s direction, an expression of fear appeared on her face and she began to run fast.
“Fuck” Buffy muttered before running after the girl, soon followed by Spike, and less quickly by the others.

Buffy opened violently the huge iron door of the crypt. There was no sound to be heard. Soon, the potentials, Willow and Xander joined her. Spike was already by her side, listening carefully at any sounds of heartbeats. He took his lighter and lit a torch. Even with the light, they couldn’t see anything, there was just a large tombstone in the back of the room and several pieces of pottery. Buffy made one step ahead.
“I know you’re there, I saw you enter this crypt. There’s no need to hide you know? If you fight the bad guys then...I guess you’re not a bad guy.” Buffy said.
“Um Buffy...she is a girl...” Kennedy stated nervously. The Slayer turned to face her and shrugged in her so buffyish ‘whatever’ way. They slightly jumped when they heard a typical and now very familiar sound. It was like when you sheathe a sword. They backed off when a dark figure fell from the ceiling and landed on its feet, in the light.
“That was a nice trick!” Buffy couldn’t help but grin. Kennedy, who was just next to her, stared at the girl attentively. The dark stranger was about her age, and a little bit taller than her. She had deep brown eyes and a muscular and gorgeous body.
“Who are you?” Buffy asked. The girl remained silent but was still staring at her intensely.
“Not talkative much...Spike any idea?” The vampire just shrugged in answer. The brunette turned her face to glare at him, her look was a mix of confusion and anger. She stared back at Buffy who had noticed it.
“He’s a friend, don’t worry. Spike’s a vampire with a soul, he doesn’t hurt anyone.” The Slayer explained calmly. The girl nodded. “Do you speak English? Can you speak at all?”
The girl finally spoke, her voice was cracked and deep.
“I’m Shannah.” Buffy smiled.
“Nice to meet you Shannah” she said, offering her hand to the girl who stared at it weirdly before shaking it. “I’m Buffy”
“I know...you’re the Slayer.” Shannah replied. The blond girl raised her eyebrows and opened her mouth to speak but the girl went on. “I’m here for you.”
“What d’you mean?”
“I’m the Phoenix.” There was a gasp, and everyone turned to look at Willow who looked stunned.
“Y-you’re the Phoenix?” she stammered. Shannah nodded. The atmosphere was awkward, they were all looking at the two girls.
“What’s a Phoenix?” Buffy asked after a moment.
