Five things Xander will never tell Spike.
ONE
The Scooby Gang met Halfrek, a vengeance demon, when Buffy’s little sister Dawn made her disastrous little wish that no one would leave her. It was only after Anya admitted to knowing Halfrek during her demon days and summoning her that they were able to leave the house they had been imprisoned in.
It had come as a surprise to all of them that Hallie knew Spike in the past too, something that they were both reluctant to admit. It was something that Xander pondered as he came to know Hallie, who occasionally visited Anya, his girlfriend.
One day, Xander, ever curious, asked her about her past with Spike, albeit as their human selves.
“Hallie, tell me about William the Bloody.”
The justice demon looked solemnly at the young man before her. “Ask me properly, Xander.”
Xander’s eyes widened at the suggestion that he make a wish. He reconsidered if he really wanted to know, then gave a small nod to himself. Taking a deep breath, he whispered, “Halfrek, I wish to know more about William the Bloody.”
Hallie gave a grin. “Granted.” She laughed out loud at Xander’s wince at the word. She knew he recalled how bad a wish could get. With a snap of her fingers, a book appeared in her hand. She passed it to Xander, who accepted it cautiously.
“There. All you need to know about William the Bloody resides in that book.” With a rumble of power, she waved goodbye and disappeared. Xander looked down at the title and a frown crossed his face, though he smiled when he saw the author’s name.
Xander put the book away, taking it out periodically over the years, feeling as though he was touching some part of Spike each time he did so... understanding him a little more each time he read a poem.
After Anya had left him, he found himself caught up in the poems. It gave him the courage to seek out the vampire, becoming friends, becoming lovers.
Spike eventually found the small volume of poems, long years after. He noted the well-worn pages that bespoke of much handling. He queried his lover about how he came to have the book.
Xander just smiled. “Effulgent? Yet I still love you.”
TWO
Xander wriggled around, pressing himself closer to the cool body sharing the narrow bed in the basement.
“Stop it, Xander. Lie still or you’ll tip us both on the floor.”
Xander stroked the pale body beneath his and a devilish smile crossed his lips. Pushing up slightly, he looked down at Spike, who looked back at him with bemused amusement.
“Wot?”
“Nothing. Just lie still for a bit, k?”
Spike grinned back at him. “Lie still, eh? Okay, I’ll show you how it’s done.” He placed his hands casually behind his head, displaying himself for Xander’s eager gaze.
With unerring speed, Xander zeroed in on a small spot just below Spike’s ear but above his neck, just on the edge of his jaw. He nibbled and got a moan then he bit down, slowly applying more pressure until he heard the moan descend into a growly purr.
Pulling back, Xander gave a small laugh as Spike’s vampiric ridges faded away to reveal his human features.
Xander couldn’t wait to tell Buffy that the sweet spot still worked. But he’d never let on to Spike how he knew.
THREE
Xander thought back to when Sweet, the demon, had made them all reveal their darkest thoughts in song. He had sung to himself in the shower, after singing his doubts about Anya to her face…. He’d then sung about his love for a certain bleached menace.
That had shocked him into silence; he had been relieved at the time that Anya never heard his warbling in the shower. He chalked it up to be another thing he’d ‘never tell’. He vowed he never would.
But vowing to never speak of a hidden desire didn’t mean it ever went away. Most days Xander saw Spike and obsessed over him. He watched as Spike sneered and insulted his way and became a fixture of the Scooby Gang. He flinched each time an insult cut deep into his feelings. Xander knew Spike would never love him.
He knew it was bad news to voice wishes aloud and mostly kept the forbidden word… wish… deep in his mind. He clearly remembered one frustrated day he wished with all his heart that Spike loved him back. He realised in horror the words he had used and bit his lip, hoping it hadn’t been heard. His shoulders sagged in despair as the word ‘done’ floated on the wind.
Now, Xander lay awake, quietly watching Spike’s still features. It was foolish to think that this would go on, that Spike would stay once he knew the truth. Spells were always broken and then Spike would leave.
As the Hellmouth’s favourite chew toy he knew it was only a matter of time.
It had it in for him.
FOUR
The survivors of the sinkhole stood at the edge of the crater, the crater that used to be Sunnydale.
Xander had retreated to the bus they had used to escape, once the real world had intruded – the police, ambulances and other official-like people. It was their domain to deal with, now the Hellmouth was closed, considered a natural disaster.
Buffy slipped quietly into the bus to sit beside him. She slipped a small, strong hand into his calloused one, giving it a gentle squeeze. “I’m sorry about Anya.”
Xander flicked her a desolate look but nodded. “Thanks, Buff. Sorry about Spike too.”
Buffy’s eyes welled with tears. “I told him I loved him, just before he… died.” She rested her head on his shoulder. He could barely make out the rest of what she said. “He said thanks, but he didn’t believe me.”
Xander closed his eye at her pain and felt his own fly free. The tears dripped down his face as he realised that he’d never have the chance to tell Spike the very same thing. He wondered if Spike would have believed him.
FIVE
Xander moaned as he dipped his tongue into the cream, eyes closed as he swirled his tongue around to savour the taste and texture of the substance that filled his mouth. He swallowed and wrapped his lips around the yellow pastry and opening his mouth took it in, in one mouthful. He didn’t think anything would replace his love of the golden treat.
Xander moaned as he dipped his tongue into Spike’s come, knowing his lover was watching as he swirled his tongue around to savour the taste and texture it as it filled his mouth. Xander swallowed it all then he wrapped his lips around the heavy cock, taking it in, in one mouthful. He hadn’t thought anything would replace his love of the Twinkie. He was wrong, but he’d never admit that to Spike.
