Chapter One

Buffy was very apprehensive as she looked at herself in the mirror. It was her first day of highschool at a completely new school, a move she was not happy with at all. She could hear her sister, Dawn, arguing with their mom about not going to school. Buffy really couldn’t blame her, because she wanted to be back in L.A. at Hemery. Her boyfriend, Pike, promised her that he wouldn’t date anyone else. Buffy planned to move back to L.A. once she graduated from highschool. Dawn’s boyfriend, Andrew, told her he was too young for a long distance girlfriend. Buffy had offered to beat him up for her, but Dawn was more devastated right now then angry. Buffy walked down the steps with a sort of resigned attitude. All of her friends were at Hemery, and here she had to start all over with only 7 months left of highschool for her. When Joyce saw her, she smiled apologetically to Buffy.

“ Honey, I know you don’t want to start a new school, but we have no other choice. Do you need me to drive you today, so you can see where it is?” Buffy sighed and shook her head.

“ I saw it on the way here. I don’t want to show up with my mom, no offense.” Joyce just smiled.

“ I understand, you’re seventeen on the verge of eighteen, and you don’t want your mother to embarrass you.” Buffy nodded and looked over at Dawn.

“ You ready to go, Dawnie?” She nodded, but it was obvious that she didn’t want to go. Once they got into the car, Dawn immediately turned the radio on, but Buffy turned it back off.

“ You need to give mom a break, Dawn. She is doing absolutely everything she can for us, and she doesn’t need us acting like brats, okay? If you want to be mad at someone, then be mad at dad. He’s the one who was....well it was his fault.” Dawn sighed and slumped back into her chair.

“ I know that, Buffy. I also know what he did, so you don’t have to shelter me from it. I just don’t understand why we had to be the ones to start over, he should have been the one to move, not us.”

Dawn had no idea how much Buffy agreed with her. She’d actually had that argument with their father, but he’d told her that it was their mother’s idea to move. He wasn’t going to because he bought the house and his business was there. She’d asked him if he planned on visiting them, and he told her he’d try, which didn’t give Buffy much hope. Her father was pretty much telling her that he was glad they were leaving him alone with his whore. When they pulled up to Sunnydale highschool, both of them just looked at it hoping this was just some horrible nightmare. She parked in the area where it said “ student parking” and the two sisters made their way towards the main office. The halls were full of kids getting ready for their first class. She looked at her watch and saw that it was about the time that Pike usually picked her up. She must have made an expression, because Dawn started talking to her.

“ You really miss him, huh? I miss Andrew, even if he is a slime ball.” Buffy smiled weakly at Dawn.

“ It’s just not fair, Dawn. We’ve been dating since Junior High and now I’m a two hour drive away from him. I hope he waits for me like he promised he would.” Dawn didn’t respond to her, but was looking at the group of people that were staring at us. Buffy squared her shoulders and started walking again towards the sign that read “office”. The eyes never left the two of them, but Buffy really didn’t care.
Buffy was in the office for almost half the day. Hemery had sent Dawn’s transcripts, but they hadn’t sent hers for some reason. So, the secretary was on the phone with her old school for quite some time while they located it and faxed it to them. She then had to talk to the counselor to get all of her classes. Buffy was in all honors classes, but this silly woman was hesitant to put her in there. The lady’s name was Halfrek, but she was adamant that she be called Hallie. Buffy assured her that she could handle the case load, she’d been doing it for a very long time now.

When school was out, she found her sister talking to the same group of people that had been staring at them. Dawn waved at her excitedly, and Buffy really couldn’t ignore her. When she got there, she was struck by how pretty they all were. Even the guys were dressed impeccably, unlike the people she went to school with and hung out with. She couldn’t believe that here sister had located the “it” crowd and really thought Buffy was going to be apart of their social circle. She couldn’t be rude though, because Dawn was introducing everyone.

“ Buffy this is Willow, Xander, Doyle, Angel, Anya, Cordelia, Faith, Spike, Tara, Wesley, Fred, Oz, Talia, Lindsey, and Riley. They’ve offered to help us catch up on what we’ve missed.” Buffy smiled as best she could, but it was hard to do.

“ Oh well that’s great, thanks. It’ll probably take me a while to get everyone’s names right, I don’t know how my sister did it.” Everyone chuckled at her comment, and a redhead stepped forward.”

“ So what classes do you this semester?” Buffy handed over her schedule to the mousy girl, and was surprised when she smiled brightly, causing her whole face to light up.

“ Hey, you’ve got every class with me, except for one. You’ve got History with Xander, Angel, and Cordy.” Buffy just nodded and then looked over at her sister, who smiled, but took the hint. She was soon saying her goodbyes. Once they were alone in Buffy’s car, she gave Dawn the third degree.

“ How do you do that? You’re in a new school for like 4 hours and you’ve tons of friends. I do not understand.” Dawn giggled.

“ Most of them are your age, only a couple are near my age. I’m just wanting this stay to be as comfortable as possible for both of us. I know you’re set on leaving once you graduate, Buffy, but I’m still going to be here.” Buffy understood and she told her so, but she didn’t want to fit in someplace else. This was not her home, this was just temporary for Buffy. When they pulled into the driveway a familiar car was parked next to their mother’s, causing Buffy to squeal and run towards the house. When she burst through the door, Pike stood up from the living room couch. Buffy threw all of her books onto the floor, and went running into his open and waiting arms.
