Chapter 1:

1783

“Cecily, I love you,” William said as he gazed at the woman in front of him. She was a vision of loveliness in her party dress. Her brown hair fell in a wave over her shoulders, and William’s fingers itched to touch it. That is, until her grey eyes grew dark with disgust.

“You are beneath me William,” she said with a laugh. “Your father may have some influence in Liverpool, but your family will never be part of the nobility. I am dirtying my hands with your middle-class filth just by talking to you now.”

William stared at her in shock. His heart shattered, and hurt radiated through his entire body. After a second he turned and ran from her, with tears falling from his eyes.

“Who were you talking to darling?” A tall man asked as he moved over to where Cecily was standing.

“Just William Giles,” she said as she turned to face him. “What was it that you called him Robert?”

“William the Bloody Awful Poet,” Robert replied,” or just William the Bloody for short,” Cecily giggled and linked her arm through his. “Let’s go inside my dear. The party was not the same while you were away.

“I will only go in if you promise to dance with me, and make me forget all about William the Bloody. He said that he loves me! Can you believe it?” She told Robert as they went inside.

William walked through the dark streets of Liverpool with tears in his eyes. The woman of his dreams had shunned him, and his heart was in pieces. All of the poems he had written for her would have to be burned. He couldn’t stand to look at them. Or, maybe, there was still hope. He could write a new and better poem for Cecily. He would send it to her, and then she would see that his love for her was strong.

You are beneath me William.

William fell to his knees. The dirt and filth of the street soaked into his clothes, but he didn’t notice. It was hopeless. He was hopeless. Cecily would never love him. She would never be in his arms. He would never kiss her lips, or make her smile.

William stood slowly, tears still rolling down his cheeks, and began to make his way towards his home. His heart sunk again when he reached his front door. His mother would be so disappointed in him. He wiped the tears from his eyes before entering his house. He was immediately met by his family’s maid, Bethany.

“Master William, you’re home early! Oh, and your clothes are filthy! Well, don’t worry about a thing. Just get ready for be, and I will take those clothes when you are done.”

William was rushed down the hall and up the stairs to his room by the maid, and he found himself comforted slightly by the familiarity of it. “Bethany,” he said after he was shoved behind a room divider and handed his bed clothes, “I was wondering if my mother was awake. I would like to talk to her.”

“No master William, you know how it is. Her illness drains the strength right out of her. She went to be shortly after you left to go to the party,” Behtany said as she turned down the sheets on his bed. “You know, Master William, my daughter was rather upset when you left. She hates it so when you go out.”

Ah yes, Harmony. William could see how she desired him, and it made him sick. The girl was utterly brainless, and she thought of nothing except money. If they married she would come up slightly in status, and he would be miserable. William shuddered at the thought. Harmony could never be what he wanted; she could never be Cecily.

William bit the collar of his nightshirt to stifle an anguished groan. He couls hear Bethany shuffling around on the other side of the screen, and he knew he would have to move sooner or later. William took a moment to calm himself before stepping around the screen and handing Bethany his dirtied clothes. “Thank you Bethany.”

She made a slight curtsy, “Good night Master William.”

“Good night,” he said as she left the room. William lay in his bed for a long while. His heart was aching, his head was full, and sleep evaded him. When he finally closed his eyes he had fitful dreams of grey eyes filled with disgust.

“Lady Elizabeth you should be in bed.”

Buffy turned to face the shy servant girl that was standing in her doorway. “Tara, how many times do I have to tell you?” she scolded kindly. “Just call me Buffy, everyone else does.”

“Oh no, Miss Elizabeth, I couldn’t. It wouldn’t be proper.”

Buffy’s smile faded as the raised voices of her parents drifted through the walls of her room. She turned back to the large window of her room and started out at the sea. She longer to be out there with the rushing waves, free, instead of being trapped in her room.

“Miss Elizabeth are you alright?” Tara asked softly.

“Everything was supposed to be different once we moved here. All of the old problems were supposed to disappear,” Buffy muttered, barely loud enough for Tara to hear.

“Miss Elizabeth you don’t sound like yourself. I have never seen you look this sad before.”

Buffy turned and gave Tara a smile that didn’t quite meet her eyes. “I’m fine Tara, really. I’m just tired, so I think I’ll go back to sleep.”

“Alright, Miss Elizabeth, good night,” Tara said as she backed out of the room.

“Good night, Tara.”
