Kara, the Vampire Slayer

Rain was restless. He lad long ago dusted his sire for being a ponce, and no longer had anything to amuse him. He went out into the miserable weather, looking for something that might catch his attention. Hopefully it would be another demon, something matching him in power and strength, something that would keep him occupied for a while. He was sick of being alone. He didn’t care if he had to go all the way to sodden Egypt; he was going to find something to take up some of his time. And he had enough money from his centuries that he could afford to do it.

Kara hated patrolling. It was the worst part of being the suped-up-savior-of-the-world-over-and-over-again Slayer. Having to wait for it to get dark then going out in the horrible winter weather when she had finals the next day did not sound appealing. Of course, it never did. Some nights, when the weather was nice, it was not so bad. But not when it was 20 and below, and not when her favorite movie was on. But as her Watcher, Dr. Bruce, always told her. “It is in your suffering, in your pain, in your perseverance, that the freedom and protection of the world lies.”
“You know what,” Kara muttered to herself, trudging through the sleet. “I don’t care if the whole bloody world goes up in smoke right about now. I’m fucking cold!” She started towards the exit of the cemetery. “I hope some demon is fool enough to pop up right now. I would love to beat the hell out of someone right now.”
“And who do you think you might be doing that to, luv? I think you should be more worried about people hurting you, out in this weather, all by yourself.” Kara turned to see a tall man in a duster with long silver hair. He was watching her intensely, apparently unphased by the weather.
“You know, you might want to be careful. Hanging out in a cemetery, middle of the night? Here, people either get eaten or in a lot of trouble.” Rain smirked at the girl’s tone. She almost sounded dismissive, although her wariness betrayed her. She didn’t trust him in the least. He took a step towards her.
“And what if I like trouble? Are you the one dishing it out?” A stake appeared in Kara’s hand, almost out of thin air.
“That depends on what kind of trouble you are looking for.” She asked, ready for anything this strange creature might throw at her. She was sure he was some sort of demon, from the way her Slayer senses were going off. But he wasn’t being threatening, yet, and she didn’t want to waste her energy if she didn’t need to. “I’ve never seen you before, although I know you’re not human, so I’m going to assume you’re just passing through.” Rained raised his eyebrows. It almost sounded like she was threatening him. Very interesting. Also interesting was the stake in her had. He nodded to himself as he realized who he was facing.
“The Slayer.” He murmured. “Imagine, the Slayer in this most boring of towns. Couldn’t you find someplace a little more…active? Important? I’m sure this place must be minor on your radar.”
“Considering you’re the demon in my town, you ask a lot of questions. Maybe you better assure me you’re no threat, or that you’re just passing through, before I decide you’re worth dealing with.” Rain chuckled. This Slayer had a lot of fire for someone so…compact.
“Relax, Slayer. I haven’t killed a mortal in a very long time…Except for Wren. And I think anyone would have done away with her. That psycho could burn the ears off the devil himself, as foul as her mouth was. And I live here, so I don’t plan on leaving anytime soon. Especially now that I know there’s something…interesting…around.” Specifically, her. She was quite a package, this Slayer. Her long black hair was in a tight braid to keep it out of her face, and her clear green eyes looked up at him warily. Her compact body was covered in tight black pants and a white down coat to keep out the cold. This was exactly the kind of action he was looking for. This would definitely keep his attention.
“Don’t call me ‘luv’. Now if you live here, why haven’t I sensed you or seen you before tonight?” Kara was irritated at this new demon that decided to pop up while she was missing Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. She would have to put in the DVD while she studied when she got back.
“If I knew your name, I wouldn’t have to use endearments…unless you wanted me to.” Kara’s face went bright red, and Rain got the impression she was going to snap something sharp at that. But Rain continued. “And I don’t kill people because killing and torturing got boring after the first 100 years…and my soul doesn’t like it much. The reason you haven’t seen me or sensed me is because I’m extremely rich, and prefer not to be hunted. Getting staked is low on my list of priorities.” He glanced at the stake in her hand. “So you can put that away. You hand must be frozen shut by now.” Kara glared at him a moment longer. Sure she could take him if he pulled something stupid, Kara put the stake away and shoved her hand in her pocket.
“And to answer what is sure to be your next question, my name is Rain.” Kara watched him for a moment longer before deciding she was cold.
“Alright, Rain. My name is Kara Bartelski, and I think we should go talk to my Watcher.”
