Prologue: A star is born

Out of the darkness cutting through the conversation of the crowd the first cords began to fill the void. Long, slow, and lingering they were almost as unexpected as what followed. Like a caress a hauntingly feminine the voice accompanied the music spinning a web that drew the crowd in. The voice that was so smooth took on a gravely undertone drawing all eyes to the stage still cloaked in darkness. As the lights began to illuminate the stage several members of the audience that were sitting at tables sat forward slightly in anticipation.

The lights began to rise and the audience was not left disappointed as a goddess stood bathed in the spotlight. The music began to speed up and the performance began, the audience of the Bronze was never disappointed when Dingoes ate my Baby played. The lead singer began to work the stage she used her body and her voice to pull the crowd in, and she just had that quality that you either had or you didn’t.

Whistler sat at a back table, the band was better in person than on tape, and on tape they were good in person they were phenomenal. The only problem was that Slayer Records didn’t want another band they wanted a solo artist this time around actually they were focused on one particular girl as their solo artist.

Wesley Wyndam-Price took the company over six-months ago and was looking to prove himself and show everyone in the industry that he deserved to be appointed CEO over Slayer Records. He planned on doing that by finding an artist to top all those his recently retired uncle Quentin Travers had on their roster.

Wesley found his potential star from an unsolicited tape sent in by an ambitious girlfriend of one of the band members. They had been in the middle of scouring unknowns to find their star when Wesley sent word that Whistler was to get his butt to Sunnydale, Ca and find out if the voice lived up to expectations. After hearing the tape Whistler was not surprised that the lead vocalist caught Wesley’s attention hell she caught his, as well.

Putting out his cigarette Whistler didn’t need to see anymore. The girl had the voice, the moves, and without a doubt the looks. She was barely 16 or 17 and was working the stage like a pro and would need little work to prep for live appearances.

The few scraps of information he was able to gather from fans of the group said that she wrote most of their songs, and played several instruments. If it was true she was an even better package than Wesley thought.

Now there was only one problem facing Whistler, and that was getting her to sign without her band.
