Prologue: Til’ the End of the World

Joyce Summers grasped her son’s hand weakly as tears streamed down his face.
“Promise me you’ll protect her. Take care of her, William. Love her.” She struggled to get out as her life began to slip away.
“Til’ the end of the world, Mom”, William Summers replied.
“I’m sorry I wasn’t strong enough.” Joyce’s last words fell from her lips before her eyes glassed over and her heart stopped beating.
William sat motionless, in shock, as the monitors all went to straight lines.

“Come on son. Let’s go see how your sister is doing.” A police officer led the numb young man away from his mother’s death bed. He thought quietly to himself what a damn shame this all was.

A happy family on their way home from dinner that just happened to be at the same intersection as a drunk driver on his way home from the bar. He had walked away from the accident with little more than a scratch while the Summers family had not been so lucky. The father, Hank, had been instantly killed on impact. The mother, Joyce, had suffered severe internal injuries and held on long enough to make it to the hospital and say goodbye to her children before death came for her. The two teenage children, Buffy and William, 14 and 15 had survived but Buffy had been so traumatized, they had to sedate her. William, the head of the family now; the man of the family stayed with his mother until her last breath. Now as the police officer escorted him to where his sister was he thought it again. Damn shame.

….Several Months Later

“No. NO! We won’t be split up!” William Summers raised his voice at the social worker trying to talk to him.
“Now, William. I know this is difficult for you but we have to do what’s in your best interests.” She informed him.
“Taking my sister away from me is in my best interests? I already had my mother and father taken. YOU ARE NOT TAKING MY SISTER!” William yelled.
“William. It’s not up for discussion anymore. Your mother’s sister, Darla, has been gracious enough to allow you both to stay here for the past few months but she can no longer do so. The company she works for transferred her to Italy and she cannot bring either of you along. I am sorry but that is where we stand. You and Buffy will need to be placed in foster care and we have two nice families willing to take each of you.” The social worker explained.
“We either go together or we don’t go at all!” William repeated.
“Don’t threaten me young man.” She replied in exasperation.

“I made a promise to a lady and I intend to keep it. I can take care of my sister. Can’t they do that emancipation thing or whatever it’s called and make me Buffy’s guardian?” William inquired.
“Not until you’re 16 in this state which you won’t be for another 6 months.” She countered.
“Fuck.” William swore and ran his hands through his hair.
“I suggest you go upstairs and tell your sister to start packing.” The social worker said.
William took a deep breath and looked her in the eye, “Fine” he said and turned on his heel.

He took the stairs two at a time and raced down to Buffy’s room. He threw open the door and stepped into her room and the closed the door behind him. Buffy was sitting on the bed, her face in her hands, crying her eyes out.
“You heard?” William asked her softly.
“Every word.” Buffy looked up at him with a tear stained red face.

William nodded and went to Buffy’s closet. He pulled out a travel bag and then began shoving clothes and various items inside.
“Come on, help me. I don’t know what all you want to take with you.” He said.
“WHAT? You’re just going to let them take me? Split us up?” Buffy ran over to him incredulously.

A brief expression of hurt crossed hi face as he realized that Buffy actually thought he was going to let her go. “No, of course not. You misunderstand me. You need to pack because we’re leaving. You and me. On our own. You better hurry. I’ll go get my things. Be ready when I get back.” William leaned down and kissed her softly on her forehead.
“We’re just going to walk out? That lady and Aunt Darla won’t just let us leave, Will.” Buffy reasoned.

“I know. That’s why we’re going out the back window.” William responded.
“Where will we go? What are we going to do?” Buffy’s lip trembled.
“I don’t know, Buffy but I promised I’d take care of you and I will. We’ll figure it all out but first we need to get out of here.” William told her.
“O.K. I trust you.” Buffy smiled at her brother.
“I love you.” William replied and quickly left the room.

Buffy began furiously packing her clothes and toiletries. She threw in her diary and some pictures and her favorite stuffed pig, Mr. Gordo. She knew she couldn’t take much with her. Just as she was zipping up her bag, William reappeared, a large duffel bag thrown over his shoulder as well.
“Got everything?” he asked her.
“Well, everything I could fit.” Buffy answered.
“Right then. Let’s go.” William grabbed her hand and led her to her window.

William climbed out and onto the ledge then scrambled over to the tree standing next to the house. He climbed down and had Buffy throw their bags down to him before motioning for her to climb down herself. Once the two teens were on solid ground, they snuck around to the backyard and climbed over the fence before disappearing into the sun drenched pavement of Los Angeles.
