Faith POV
I spend way too much time in my room.
This small, crappy motel room is really starting to get to me. Most days I just sit around watching TV, trying to read a magazine or working out as much as I can in this small, enclosed place. And it’s driving me insane.
I don’t go out all that much anymore. When I first got to Sunnydale, I used to go out all the time. It was a new place and I like to explore, get to know the area. I’d go through the cemeteries, making sure I knew every section of them so vamps had no chance of sneaking up on me. I’d go to the clubs, dance, drink, maybe find some guy to get all horizontal with.
Not anymore. I only leave my motel room now to eat or go slaying. Even then, I stick to myself. I don’t even scratch the “itch” I get after slaying a few vamps or kicking some ugly demon’s ass. I just don’t care enough to. I really don’t want the company, especially when I know the kind of company I’ll get. I’m trying to convince myself I have more self respect than that.
I came to Sunnydale because of B, Buffy, the other slayer. The true slayer if you ask anyone who matters. I’m just runner-up. I really don’t mind that part of it though. She’s the one getting all the pressure from all the important-types. I’m just there for backup, to give her a hand when she’s in a jam. That’s really all that matters to me.
The two of us got on real well at first. She really didn’t let me into her life and I didn’t let her into mine, but when we slayed together it was just... wow. We moved in-sync, slaying vamps easily and I could sense her movements and react to them. We’re really the perfect team.
After a few weeks though, things changed. I began to look at her differently. I would watch her fight and was just mesmerized. I mean, I always thought she was wicked hot but after awhile I got these feelings. I’m not used to feelings, any feelings. I don’t like them and these ones scared the shit out of me.
I got the urge to ask her out, to get to know her better. I’d always kinda been equally attracted to girls as much as guys but this one took me by surprise. It didn’t help any that everything that comes out of my mouth sounds like a sexual innuendo. I didn’t want her to think I was coming onto her but at the same time, I wanted her to think it just in case she felt the same way.
I wanted her to be my girlfriend, still do. I never was one to ever want that; it’s been all about getting off and getting the hell out of there. But I would never do that to her. Every time I saw her I just wanted to never leave her side.
It was just too confusing, too stressful to be around her. I stopped going to the library to check in and tried to avoid the cemeteries I thought she might be patrolling. I still did my duty as a slayer: I still patrolled every night. I just didn’t want to see B while doing it. I was afraid of what I might say to her. The last thing I ever want to do is offend her or make her angry.
I guess it doesn’t matter too much though. No one’s really gone looking for me so there’s probably not a big bad wandering around. That’s fine with me. This way I can still do the job I was called to do and avoid the person I least want to be around right now.

A knock on the door woke Faith out of her trance in staring at the TV, something she was beginning to do more and more. She looked at the clock on the chipped up nightstand and saw it was late afternoon. She sighed and got up, walking to the door. As soon as she got within a couple steps from it, she knew exactly who was on the other side.
“Hey, B, something up?” Faith asked as she swung open the door, trying her hardest to sound casual. Just seeing Buffy brought all her emotions to the surface.
“Are you avoiding me?” Buffy asked, her face serious. She was dressed in a skirt that ended just above the knee and a flimsy top. Faith tried desperately not to look her up and down but failed miserably. She hoped the blonde didn’t notice.
Faith leaned against the doorframe, not really wanting to let Buffy in. Her place was a mess and she was kind of ashamed of how rundown it was. “No,” she lied, “I’ve been around. I just like working on my own is all, don’t like taking orders. I’ve still been going out every night, fighting the good fight.”
“Oh,” Buffy looked down, her brow furrowed and wondering why she was still standing outside the room. She looked back up at the brunette with a determined look on her face. “Are you going to let me in?”
“Uh, sure,” Faith answered, slowly stepping aside to allow Buffy to enter the room. The blonde stopped near the bed and stood awkwardly, fiddling with her hands. “So, B, why’d you stop by? Is there some big brewing evil?”
Buffy sat down on the bed as Faith walked over to her. “Isn’t there always?” she asked with a smirk, seeming to relax a little and not look so irritated with her young counterpart.
“I’m sure,” Faith grinned back. “What’s going down this time?”
“Something I’m sure,” Buffy said looking down, “but I’m not here for that. I’m wondering why the hell you haven’t been checking in.”
“I told you, B,” Faith sighed, “I’m still being a good little slayer. I’ve been patrolling. I just haven’t seen anything that made me want to report back to Giles. Do you expect me to run around with you or wait for instructions in order to do what I’m made for?”
“No, but I’ve kept my eye out to see if I’d run into you on patrol,” Buffy said looking up at Faith. “You haven’t been around. I thought for sure we’d run into each other.” She paused. “I like patrolling with you, Faith. Isn’t it kinda lonely going it alone?”
“I’m used to it,” Faith shrugged and raised an eyebrow, “I thought you could handle it alone.”
“I’m not saying that I can’t,” Buffy said slowly, “I just like the company. I end up talking to myself if I patrol alone. The vamps think I’m crazy.”
Faith laughed. “That’s probably a good thing, B,” she said then sighed. She sat next to Buffy, getting more comfortable as the two settled into their normal banter. “Why don’t you just go with Red or Xander?”
“Because you can handle yourself against vamps better than they can,” she scowled at the brunette, “and why are you trying to pawn me off on someone else?”
“I’m not,” Faith claimed weakly.
“Okay,” Buffy said, “then you can go to the library with me to check in with Giles and then you can go patrolling with me later.”
“I don’t know, B,” Faith said, looking away, “I kinda have some plans.”
“Huh,” Buffy lifted an eyebrow. She knew Faith was lying. The brunette just wasn’t all that good at it. She stood up and pulled Faith up with her. “Change them, you’re coming with me. Or do you want me to think you’re avoiding me again?”
Faith looked up at her and smirked, knowing a losing battle when she saw one. “Well, I don’t think I have a choice here,” she sighed. “All right, let’s go over to the library.”
Buffy laughed. “I always get my way, Faith.”
“I can see that.”
******
The two slayers walked briskly into the library, Buffy leading the way. Willow, Xander and Cordelia were at a table reading through books. Hearing the doors swing open, they looked up at the pair.
“Faith,” Xander commented, “back from the dead?”
“Something like that,” Faith grunted, looking like she wanted to be somewhere else.
“Where have you been, Faith?” Willow asked. “Buffy said she wasn’t seeing you on patrol and you haven’t stopped by.”
“I’ve been around,” Faith said in a noncommital way. Both Willow and Xander looked over at Cordelia expectantly.
“What?” she said, giving the pair a disgruntled look. “I don’t care what she does with her time.” She went back to reading her textbook.
“Anyway,” Buffy broke in, “where’s Giles?”
“Right here, Buffy,” Giles said, walking out of his office while looking at a book in his hand, “I was expecting you to stop in earlier.” He looked up to see Faith standing next to Buffy. “Oh, Faith, I’m glad you decided to stop by.”
“Hence my lateness,” Buffy said while sweeping a hand in Faith’s direction, “what’s the what?”
“Actually, it’s been rather quiet,” Giles stated as he walked toward the girls. “I only expect a routine patrol tonight. Faith, have you been patrolling in town lately?”
“Every night,” Faith said quickly, “just not the same parts as B, I guess.”
“Okay,” Giles responded, “well, you’ll patrol together tonight.”
“That’s what I was saying,” Buffy said, grinning at her watcher. “See, I know what you’re thinking.”
“And that is frightening,” he said. “Well, I have nothing else for you. Let me know how the night goes and check in with me if you see something unusual.”
“Uh, Giles,” Faith put in, “what if I see a vampire? That is pretty unusual to most people.”
The rest of the group laughed as Giles furrowed his brow towards his younger slayer. “It’s not out of the ordinary for you, Faith. If you or Buffy find something you think isn’t right, you will come here and report in.”
“Yes, sir,” Buffy gave him a mock salute and turned to leave, grabbing Faith’s hand to pull her with her. “We’ll give you all the dull details from patrol in the morning. Let’s go, Faith.”
“Uh, okay,” Faith said as Buffy pulled her along, “bye.” She looked at the group as she walked semi-backwards out the door. Once they walked past the doors and into the hall, Faith tried to separate herself from the other slayer. “I’ll check you later, B.”
“Oh, no, you’re not going back to the motel. We’ll grab some food at my house and then patrol,” Buffy continued to grip her hand as they went down the hall.
“Okay,” Faith voiced uncomfortably but didn’t stop Buffy from dragging her out of the school.
******
The pair walked to Buffy’s house without saying much of anything to each other. Buffy tried to make conversation but Faith shut her down at every angle. They finally reached the blonde’s house in an uncomfortable silence.
“Come on in,” Buffy said, opening the door and holding it open for Faith. “We can just hang here until it gets dark.”
Faith walked into the house and looked around the living room, up the stairs and toward the kitchen. “Where’s you mom?”
“San Francisco,” Buffy smiled and walked into the kitchen, Faith following slowly behind her. “She’s purchasing some sort of artwork or whatever, I really didn’t pay attention. The point is, she’s gone and she left me money,” she looked back at Faith and grinned.
“Okay,” Faith said simply and nodded.
Buffy scowled and turned to the fridge, opening it and leaning over to check the contents. Faith watched her silently, trying desperately to keep all the nasty thoughts out of her head, of what she could do to Buffy as the blonde was bent over and looking into the fridge. She shook the thoughts away as the older slayer sighed and closed the door in frustration.
“Well, nothing there,” Buffy groaned and faced Faith. “What do you say we get some pizza?”
“Sure,” Faith said and moved to lean on the counter.
Buffy scowled again. “What’s with you, Faith? Normally, I don’t have to pull teeth to get you to talk. Are you sure you’re not pissed about something?”
“No,” Faith answered but didn’t elaborate.
“Damn it, say something! I know you’re capable of more than one word responses,” Buffy nearly yelled, frustrated, and sat down at the island in the middle of the kitchen. “What’s going on with you?”
“Nothing much,” Faith jumped up and sat on the counter across from her, “I’ve just been thinking a lot is all.”
“What about?”
“Everything,” Faith said, trying to maintain eye contact with Buffy and not show any emotion at the same time. “You know, I’m starving. Why don’t you order a pizza?”
The blonde narrowed her eyes. “Okay,” she said slowly, “but you’re not getting out of this conversation. As soon as I’m off the phone, we’re talking.”
Faith nodded. “Fine.”
Buffy walked over to the phone and order a large pizza with everything, something she knew Faith loved. She smiled and looked over at Faith once she was done, who was grinning back at her from the counter.
“You really pay attention, B,” Faith said, “that is almost my favorite food right there.”
“Really?” Buffy smirked and took her seat again. “And what is your favorite food?”
“Steak,” Faith said, “medium rare, little steak sauce. Best thing in the world.”
“Hmm,” Buffy mused, “now I know what to bribe you with when I need you to do something.”
“I guess you do,” Faith smiled, looking down at her feet. The two were silent for a few minutes before Buffy finally spoke up.
“So, about your avoidance issues...” she started and succeeded in getting Faith to talk.
“For the last time, B, I’m not avoiding you,” she groaned and lied... again. That was, of course, the one thing she concentrated on in the last few weeks. “I just like being on my own. People make me uncomfortable.”
Buffy nodded. “Okay, I guess I can live with that explanation,” she smirked at the brunette, “for now.”
The chosen two just made light small talk until the pizza arrived about thirty minutes later. They both grabbed a soda and started to dig in, but Buffy still couldn’t shake the feeling there might be something Faith wasn’t telling her.
“Faith, sometimes I think I’ll never really know you,” she said, smiling over at the brunette sitting across from her at the table. She wanted to get Faith to explain herself, knowing she wasn’t being all that truthful. There was no way people made Faith so uncomfortable that she’d try to drop off the face of the earth.
“You know enough,” Faith said, giving her a hint of a smile.
“I don’t even know your last name,” Buffy said, raising an eyebrow. There were so many things she wanted to know, but this was a start.
“Lehane,” the brunette answered simply, “I try not to use it. Reminds me of home.”
“See, that was easy,” Buffy grinned, “I know I can get more information out of you.”
“Time will tell, B,” Faith smirked at her for a split second before staring back at her food, wondering what she should say. After thinking for a minute, she made up her mind to be up front with the blonde slayer no matter what the consequences. With a look of determination on her face, she looked up at Buffy and asked, “B, will you go out with me?”
Buffy nearly choked on the pizza in her mouth and starting coughing, not looking at Faith. She took a drink and tried to process what Faith had just asked her. It was the last thing she had expected to hear.
“What?”
“Will you go out with me?” Faith asked again, more strength in her voice. It was such a relief to say that Faith became instantly more confident.
Blinking a few times, Buffy looked at Faith wide-eyed. “What do you want me to say to that?”
Faith gave her a small smile. “Well, I want you to say ‘yes’, of course, but I know you’re straight as an arrow. I just needed to get that out.”
Buffy took a few deep breaths and ran a hand through her hair. “That’s why you haven’t been around. You don’t want to be around me,” she concluded, still trying to process the situation.
“It’s not that I don’t want to be around you, but I’ve been getting these feelings for you, B,” Faith said, “so it’s hard to be around you. I didn’t want to say the wrong thing and risk getting you all pissed off.”
“You avoiding me got me ‘all pissed off’,” Buffy said, looking Faith in the eye, “you should have just told me.”
“I think I just told you, B,” Faith responded, keeping eye contact with Buffy. “And you’re answer is...”
Buffy sighed. “Faith, I don’t know. I mean, that’s not a simple answer for me.”
Faith started eating again with a glimmer of hope as Buffy didn’t just shoot her down. “Think about it.”
