Chapter 1: Your Mission, Should You Choose To Accept It. . .
~~~~~~
Angel entered the Hyperion’s lobby to the sound of Cordelia’s laughter. He immediately thought it was Groo who made the seer laugh but he stiffened when he heard an all too familiar Bronx accent.
“Whistler?” The vampire asked moving forward Cor Cordy’s office.
“Angel? How you been?” The demon asked turning away from his secretary.
“Fine. You?” Angel said cautiously, knowing the demon wasn’t here for a social call.
“As good as can be expected.” Whistler said.
“So what is it? I know you’re not here for a friendly visit.” Angel said.
“You know me well my depressing friend.” Whistler said motioning for him to sit down. “I got a little story to tell you.”
“Should I leave you two alone?” Cordy asked starting towards the door.
“Naa, gorgeous. You can stay.” Whistler said.
The seer nodded and sat down next to Angel gracing the dark haired vampire with a smile.
“Let’s see, where should I start. What do you know about other dimensions? Alternate universes?”
“A little. I’m not exactly an expert but I have some experience.” Angel said remembering Willow’s vampire doppelganger.
“Okay, well the Powers don’t just govern our world, they govern several others as well. One of these worlds is in trouble an they need you to fix it.”
“Me? Why me?” Angel asked.
“I’m getting to it. Don’t interrupt me. Here’s the deal, in this alternate reality there’s a version of you only his soul is permanent. He’s currently, um, involved with a girl named Venus. In this alternate world Venus and the other Angel are destined to be together, fate and all that. But the other you has different ideas. In a few days in that world Buffy shows up and low and behold the other Angel goes all lusty for our favorite blonde slayer.” He paused.
“And?” Cordelia asked.
“The Oracles have predicted that Angel is going to leave Venus for Buffy but what the other you doesn’t know is that together he and Venus are meant to save their world. Just like here there was a prophecy saying Angel would turn human and when he does Venus conceives his child and the kid saves the world but if Angel leaves Venus for Buffy, no child, no world saveage.” Whistler explained.
“So what am I supposed to do?” Angel asked.
“The Powers want you to go to the alternate universe, pretend to be the other you and stop this mess before it starts.”
“Excuse me?” Cordy exclaimed.
“How would I be able to impersonate this other version of me if he’s around?”
“The powers will take care of that.” Whistler said.
“Wait a minute! You’re not actually considering this are you? I mean what if I, I mean we, what if we need you here.” Cordelia said.
“You won’t, kid. The Powers send you the visions; they know when you’re going to get one. Things will be quiet while Angel’s away.” Whistler informed her.
“How are the Powers going to ‘take care of it’?” Angel asked, which earned him a scowl from Cordelia for ignoring her.
“While you’re there the Powers are going to keep the other Angel in almost a sleep like state but he’ll feel what you’re feeling. We’ll not everything just what he’s supposed to feel so when Buffy shows up he won’t fall madly in love with her thus destroying the world. When you leave and the alternate Angel is released he’ll have your memories as if he himself lived through it.”
Whistler watched as the vampire rolled the idea around in his head the demon knew Angel’s ar ber before he spoke.
“I’ll do it.” Angel said missing Whistler’s smirk.
~~~~~~~
The next week was a blur. Among Cordelia’s protests Whistler taught Angel everything he’d need to know about Venus and the other Angel. Finally the day came for him to leave for the alternate reality, as Whistler prepared things for the spell Angel sat and talked with Gunn.
“So, in this other world your soul is gonna be permanent?” The vampire hunter asked.
Angel nodded. “It’s going to be hard. I mean Buffy will be right there and if I wanted to I could just reach out. . .but I can’t.”
“I know it’s gonna be rough but you’re gonna save a lot of people, a whole world. Maybe the Powers will step up that turning you human thing.”
Angel smiled then stood as Whistler called out his name.
“You ready?” The demon asked when Angel joined him in the hotel’s lobby.
“As I’ll ever be.” Angel said stepping inside the circle Whistler had had Fred draw on the floor in chalk. “I’ll see you all in a week.”
They all said their good-byes then Whistler began the ritual. One moment he’d been staring into Cordelia’s fearful hazel eyes, the next he was staring at a wall. Whistler had said he’d be transported to the other Angel’s bedroom in the house he shared with Venus.
The vampire looked around stunned; the decorations were almost identical to his own room. But instead of being in the Hyperion in LA he gazed out the window to reveal the ocean shimmering in moonlight. Whistler had shown him a crude but well done sketch of the house to show him where all the rooms were. It was a fairly large beach house in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Whistler said that Venus wouldn’t be home so he’d have a little time to familiarize himself with the place. A clock on the nightstand said it was 2:00 am. Although Venus was human she was a night person. She worked as a DJ in a local club, her shift ended at 2:30 so he set about wandering around the house and looking around until he heard the front door open. He found himself in a state of anticipation.
The house it’s self told Angel that he and his doppelganger had similar tastes. Whistler hadn’t shown him a picture or told him anything other than what was absolutely necessary about Venus so he was wandering what she was like, what had captured the other Angel’s attention. He knew the second he saw her it was her eyes. The green orbs practically glowed with intelligence and curiosity and innocence. She stood in the doorway of the kitchen smiling at him. She was beautiful. Waist length dark copper hair, those bright moss colored eyes, and naturally red lips. Whistler had said she was full-blooded Irish but she gratefully lacked the usual trademark freckles for a girl of her complexion. Her skin was pale and flawless. His eyes scanned downwards, the thin green baby T hugged hidden curves as did her tight hip hugger blue jeans.
“Well are you going to stand there and stare at me all night or are you going to welcome me home properly?” She asked lightly, those mystifying eyes twinkling with mischief.
She probably means a hello kiss, thats what normal couples did, right? Angel asked himself as he moved forward cautiously hoping she would take over once he got near her, gratefully she did.
Unlike Buffy, she was tall so she effortlessly slid her arms around his neck and placed a gentle kiss on his lips.
“How was your night?” She asked moving away from him towards the fridge.
“Fine, yours?”
“Same old, same old.” She said rummaging through the contents then settling on a chocolate pudding cup. She turned and gracefully slid onto the marble island in the middle of the room her feet swinging back and forth like a child. She was only eighteen but from what his demon mentor had told him she had had a hard life, which had made her mature fast. Her parents had died in a house fire when she was fifteen and her Aunt and Uncle had taken her in, they were good kind people but not really the parenting types so they gave her access to her parents’ life insurance policy and let her do what she pleased. She and the other Angel had met at the club where she worked almost a year and a half before and moved in together eight months ago.
“Did you stay in all night?” She asked but Angel was momentarily preoccupied watching her tongue snake out and lazily lick the pudding off her spoon. It had been so long since he’d been with a woman and with his new found feelings for Cordelia he was in need of a little attention. Knowing that he could be with this gorgeous creature was definitely getting to him.
“Earth to Angel, come in Angel?” She said.
“What? Oh yeah, I stayed in.” Angel said dragging his eyes away from her mouth.
“Are you okay? You seem distracted.” She said.
“What can I say, you distract me.” Angel said with a playful smile.
“Really?” She purred setting down her treat and sliding slowly off her perch. She stalked towards him like a panther moving in on its prey.
“You know you do.” He said with a smirk, silently thanking the Powers for this mission.
She stopped after she was only a few inches in front of him and once again slid her arms around his neck. She leaned forward and nuzzled his cheek with her own, her lips working their way to his ear.
“Good.” She hissed into his ear as she took the lobe between her teeth nipping lightly.
Angel wrapped one arm around her waist pulling her to him then used his free hand to tilt her chin, capturing her lips in a bruising kiss. She moaned into his mouth and her fingers slid into his hair trying to push his head closer to hers. He released her chin and his hand dropped to her hip, caressing the bare flesh above the low waistband of her jeans. She whimpered as his hand drifted higher but then stopped when he heard the front door open.
“Shit! I forgot Doyle and Jay were coming over.” Venus groaned. “We’ll finish this later.” She said dragging his lips to hers for a quick rough kiss.
Angel watched as she bounced out of the room to greet their friends.
Angel grumbled to himself but he couldn’t contain his excitement at the prospect of seeing his old friend again so he quickly followed Venus out into the main hall. As Venus walked around the pair to shut the door Angel smiled as he moved forward to greet his friend.
“Hey Angel.” The girl Venus had called Jay said moving forward and placing a chaste kiss on the vampire’s cheek.
“Angel, is it alright if Jayme an' me crash here for a few days. The rat population has skyrocketed and the building is being bombed.” Doyle asked.
His eyes flickered to where Venus stood behind their friends, her faced was twisted in a frustrated frown, the disappointment apparent in the green orbs.
“Of course you can stay here.” Venus said, her cheery tone contrasting to the grimace on her face. She moved to Angel’s side and took his hand.
“Great! We’ll go get our stuff.” Jay said smiled brightly at the couple in front of her.
Once they were out the door Venus threw her hands in the air and rested her forehead on Angel’s shoulder.
“Looks like we won’t be able to finish anything for a while. Damn it!” The red head said moving towards the stairs. Angel followed. He walked behind her to the guest room and watched from the doorway as she busied herself straightening the bed. “I wish those two would get it over with already. I mean I don’t mind sharing a bed with Jay but the purpose of us moving in together was so we wouldn’t have to worry about things like this.”
Angel took the hint and hazarded a question. “Why don’t you just make them share a room? Maybe something will happen.”
“Angel, love, you know how Jay is. She won’t sleep in the same bed as Doyle if her life depended on it.” Venus said. “She doesn’t trust herself and she doesn’t believe me that Doyle likes her.”
Angel nodded in understanding finally getting a clearer picture of what was going on. “It’s only for a few days and they can’t be around ALL the time.” He watched as she smirked at him and her tongue darted out to lick her lips. “Or we could just say the hell with them and sleep on the living room floor.”
“As much as that appeals to me you know Jayme would throw a fit. She’s still insisting that if I’m a good friend I won’t flaunt the magnificent relationship I have with you while she sleeps alone every night. I’m going to get those two together if it’s the last thing I do.” Venus said almost to herself. “Oh, remind me to call Darla later, would you?”
“Darla?” Angel asked trying desperately to keep the shock out of his voice.
“Yes, remember? She and Lindsey are flying in this weekend to see us. How could you forget something like that? I mean after all she is your sire or was or well the point I’m trying to make is that you shouldn’t have forgotten.”
“You’re right.” Angel said distractedly. Angel thought adding yet another piece to the list of things the demon had forgotten to mention.
“So the she-devil’s coming for a visit?” Doyle asked as he entered the room.
“Yeah. It’s about time, but Lindsey wasn’t able to get away from the firm until now.” Venus said.
“How’s that going for him, I mean going from a huge place like Wolfram &Hart to a small firm like Anderson and Cline has to be a bit of a change.” Doyle said moving to the room’s only dresser and putting away a few things.
“Darla said he’s much happier even if he does get bored now and again. She’s happier too, it’s sweet he was willing to quit Wolfram & Hart for her.”
“Like he had a choice, once Darla sets her mind to something there’s no turning back, right, Angel?” Doyle asked.
“Definitely.” Angel said.
“Remember Angel, you promised you’d behave yourself. Darla is still angry that we didn’t make the wedding and you are going to be on your best behavior to make up for it, right?” Venus said moving to his side and slipping a slim arm around his waist.
“Yes.” Angel said. Damn you Whistler, Angel cursed again. Almost as if in answer he heard the doorbell ring.
“I’ll get it.” Jay called from somewhere in the house. Angel knew it was Whistler before he heard the demon’s voice.
“Where’s my favorite little love goddess?” He called from the stairs.
Angel watched as a smile of sheer joy brightened Venus’ face and she took off into the hallway.
“Whistler!” She squealed and threw herself into his open arms. “Where have you been?”
“Yes Whistler, where have you been?” Angel asked glaring at him.
“Angel, pal. Is that anyway to greet your old friend, I mean it’s been months.”
“It has, hasn’t it? Then we should catch up. Come on, we still have a few hours before dawn, let’s go out for a drink.” Angel said, the hard look in his eyes not allowing any room for refusal.
“Sure, Angel. I have some errands to run anyway.”
“You’re coming back here, right, Whistler?” Venus asked, her eyes shining with affection.
“Of course, kid. You’re stuck with me for a few days.”
Venus smiled then turned toward Angel. “Good, I’ll get Doyle and Jay settled while you’re gone.” She kissed Angel’s cheek then made her way back into the guestroom.
