Inevitable

Pairings: Buffy/Xander

Summary: Buffy does like Xander, but doesn't want to break the friend code with Willow. So, she tells Xander she won't go to the dance with him, cause she doesn't want to hurt Willow. Xander ends up kissing Buffy...smuttiness ensues.

Buffy felt horrible. Xander probably wouldn't ever talk to her again. He'd taken her completely by surprise when he'd asked her to the dance. She'd had no idea that Xander had felt that way about her. She'd liked Xander the first time she'd seen him, but it was obvious that Willow had feelings for him. So, she'd started dating Angel. Angel who was absolutely gorgeous. Angel was the perfect man, except for one thing...he was way too old for her. He'd said he was older than her, and he wasn't kidding. It turned out that Angel was a junior at Sunnydale College . It just wasn't fair. The two perfect guys that she liked one was taken, only not in the literal sense, and the other was waaay to old.
Buffy was at her locker, and she must have looked down, because Willow walked up to her. " Hey Buffy, what's wrong? You look so sad." Little did she know. Buffy looked over at her, and tried to smile, but failed.
" It's Xander. He asked me to the dance, and I said no. He was really upset, wils. I'm afraid that he'll never talk to me again." Willow looked shocked.

" You said no? I thought that you would, I mean, you don't like Xander that way, right?" Buffy hung her head.

" Right, but I still feel terrible. I should have said yes, but then he would have gotten the wrong idea." Willow sighed.

" It's okay, Buffy, he'll get over it. I'm sure he's still going to go tomorrow with us. Is Angel still taking you to the dance?" Buffy shook her head no.

" No, it turns out that he's way to old for me. I like him alot, but he's a junior in college . There is no way my mom would let me date him, and anyway, he's not really my type." Willow gawked.

" You had an icredibly sexy college guy pursuing you, and all you have to say is..'he's not my type!' Are you insane!" Buffy grinned.

" It really was fun when he was all chasing me, but honestly. He's like 8 years older than me, no thank you." Willow nodded her understanding.

"Well, have you at least gotten your dress yet?" Buffy grinned from ear to ear.

" Oh yes I did. My mom bought me the white one I was telling you about. I'm sure to get asked to dance several times. I do hope Xander goes, though. I want to at least dance with him a couple of times." Buffy couldn't believe she was fibbing to Willow. First with telling Willow she didn't like Xander. Now with saying she wanted to dance with him. The truth was she wanted to monopolize his time. She wanted to pull him into a small corner, and tell him what she really felt. Buffy kept grinning at Willow when she said.

" I'm so going over to his house after school. I'm going to tell him he'd better go or else." Willow's smile faltered at that. What did Willow want her to do? Completely ignore the fact that she'd hurt him? There was no possible way she could do that. It surprised her when Willow said what she did.

" I don't think that's a good idea, Buffy. He's really upset, you know. He'd been talking to me about asking you for a really long time, and when you said no, that hurt him. He probably won't take kindly to you asking him to go as friends." Buffy frowned at her statement.

" I don't know. I just really have to talk to him. I don't want him to go on hating me, and I don't want him to stay home tomorrow. You know Xander, he'll stay out of school tomorrow so he can skip the dance." Willow nodded.

" Okay, tell him I said to come too. With the two of us dancing with him, I'm sure he'll have a good time." Buffy put on a fake smile at Willow's last comment. She hadn't thought about the fact that Willow would want to dance with him. Of course she would, she was in love with him! Buffy was getting so frustrated.

" Exactly! He won't have any excuses not to go with two hot chicks wanting to spend all there time with him."

Buffy had never been over to Xander's house without Willow. It was kind of strange knocking on the door. Willow could always just walk in. Xander's mom answered the door. She smelled horribly of alcohol. " Hi, Mrs. Harris. Is Xander home from school yet?" She sighed.

" Yes, he is. He's in his room, you can go on back. I imagine you know where it is?" Buffy nodded. She'd been there a couple of times before, so she knew where his room was. When she got to his door, she couldn't believe what she heard. It was so funny. Xander was listening to country music. Trying her best not to giggle, Buffy knocked on his door. When she didn't hear anything she thought maybe he was sleeping, and was going to leave, but she finally heard a quiet " come in."

Buffy walked into his room and smiled at him. " Hi, Xander." Xander had been lying down on his bed, and when he heard who it was, he jumped up looking very surprised.

" Buffy? What the hell are you doing here ?" Buffy sighed.

" I couldn't take it that you were upset with me, Xan. I don't like it when you're upset with me. Can I sit down?" Xander was still in shock, so he just nodded. Buffy walked further in the room, shut the door, and went to sit beside him on his bed. Xander didn't say anything to her, he just stared at her. Buffy sighed again, and hung her head.

" Do you hate me, Xander? I really couldn't bare it if you did." Xander finally found his voice.

" I don't hate you, Buffy. I'm just really embarrassed with myself." Buffy looked up at him surprised.

" Why are you embarrassed? You really shouldn't be. I feel terrible that I upset you, but I did have my reasons for saying no to you." With this statement, Buffy put her head on Xander's shoulder, which confused Xander beyond reason.

" What are you talking about? You told me your reasons! You specifically said that you didn't like me like that. You said that you just wanted to be my friend. Believe me, I remeber it perfectly." Buffy sighed, but didn't move her head off of his shoulder.

" Did it ever occur to you that I was lying? I mean, come on, Xander! I love you, you're my best friend!" Xander moved Buffy off of him.

" That's what I mean. I love you too, Buffy, but I have other feelings for you. I'd love for you to want to date me, but you obviously don't, and I just said date me."
Buffy laughed at this.

" Xander, I'd love to date you, but I can't." This only suceeded in confusing Xander farther.

" You'd love to date me? Are you deliberatly trying to confuse me? If so, then it's really working " Buffy sighed once more, and took a deep breath.

" Xander, please come to the dance. I promise to explain everything to you there. I just really want you to go with us like we'd planned." Xander sighed.

" Okay, I'll go, but the only reason I'm doing so, is because I have to know what you mean, and you just promised to tell me." At this buffy smiled and hugged Xander really hard.
