Prologue- Mommy
"Mom? Mom? Mommy?" Buffy called out to the limp body of her mother, Joyce, laying lifeless on their living room couch........
Two weeks, a house put up for sale, a moving van on it's way to storage, and a funeral later, Buffy Anne Summers was on her way to her sister's in Sunnydale, California from Los Angeles. Beside her, driving in silence was her brother n law, William Giles, better known as Spike. Her older sister, Cecily had sent Spike to gather Buffy and what possessions she had left after the rest was sent to storage.
Cecily had the decency to show up for the funeral but then went straight back to Sunnydale and conducted taking care of Joyce's affairs from a distance. She couldn't even be bothered to come and get Buffy for thve sve so instead sent her husband, whom she treated more lin ern errand boy than her spouse.
Spike and Buffy barely knew each other. They had met once at his and Cecily's wedding for a total of a few hours and had never seen each other again until Joyce's funeral. He had always been kind and though you could sense his uncomfortableness, he was trying his best to make Buffy feel O.K.
Spike was a very handsome man with bright blue eyes, sharp cheekbones and bleached blonde hair but Buffy was numb with grief that she paid little mind to anything or anyone around her. The two weeks since her mother's death had passed in a blur.
Spike, on the other hand couldn't help but take notice of how much Buffy had changed since he last saw her. Back then she had had dark hair that was done up in piggy tails with a frilly pink little girl's dress on. The Buffy he was looking at now had polished blonde hair, a toned and tan body, full and supple breasts where once there was nothing. She was wearing a slip of a short skirt and a barely there spaghetti strap blouse. Buffy had certainly grown up. He mentally kicked himself for his wandering thoughts, one because he was married, to her sister at that but mostly because the poor girl had just lost her mother. He shouldn't be having any such thoughts. Spike hadn't known Joyce very well but what he had known was good. He had liked the lady. She had treated him decent, unlike her eldest daughter.
Spike cleared his throat and finally spoke, "Umm..Buffy...are you hungry? Would you like me to pull over for something to eat?"
"Huh?" Buffy's head swivled from where she was looking out the window to look at Spike.
"Food. Do you want some?" Spike asked again.
"No..I'm not hungry." Buffy sighed.
Spike took in her sullen cheeks, bags under her eyes and almost skeletal stature. She had really deteriorated over the past two weeks.
"Pet, I really think sho should eat something. You need some meat on your bones or you're going to blow away." Spike tried to make her smile.
"Fine. Whatever. I don't care." Buffy looked back out the window, effectively dismissing him.
"Like sister, like sister" Spike muttered under his breath but it was loud enough for Buffy to hear.
"I am nothing like my sister. Don't ever compare her to me." Buffy looked at him with angry eyes.
"White flag. Sorry." Spike replied as he pulled off an exit ramp and into a roadside diner.
"I guess I could eat something." Buffy said, feeling a bit guilty by how sad Spike's face looked when she yelled at him. It was her way of calling a truce.
"I'm feeling a might peckish myself. Come on." he said to her after he had exited the car and came around to open her car door for her.
"Thank you, Spike." Buffy told him as he held out his hand to help her out of the car.
Buffy's eyes met his as he grasped her hand a d a small jolt of electricity sparked through them, causing her to draw her hand away and blush.
Buffy walked ahead of him and entered the diner.
"No. Nothing like your sister at all." Spike said aloud to himself as he watched her, then followed behind her.
