“All rise for the honorable Judge B. Summers” the court bailiff yelled out in a low deep voice.
A petite attractive woman walked through the Judge’s Chambers door and took her seat on the bench.
“Be seated” the bailiff said after she was seated.

The judge read over the file in front of her and then looked up. The prosecuting attorney and associate attorneys sat at their table and the defendant sat at his, minus his defense attorney. Judge Summers turned to her court assistant and asked her who the defendant’s attorney was.

“It’s Mr. Giles” the assistant squeaked out.
Judge Summers jaw tensed, “William Giles?”
“Yes, Your Honor.” She answered.
Judge Summers turned back to the front and called to the defendant, “Mr. O’Reilly, do you have any idea where your attorney is at?”
“No, Your Honor.” He said with a furious look on his face.
Judge Summers sighed, “I have a full docket today and I’m afraid if your attorney can’t find it important enough to be on time or show up at all that I have no choice but to….”

The doors to the court room burst open and a shockingly handsome, yet disheveled man came sauntering in. He was medium built, about 5’ 10” with bleached blonde hair. Well defined cheekbones, cerulean blue eyes and full sensuous lips adorned his face. William “Spike” Giles was to put it mildly, a very beautiful man. He knew it too, of course.

“Sorry, Your Honor…” he began without looking up as he fumbled with his briefcase to take papers out.
“Well, Well Well, look who decided to show up” Judge Summers said coldly taking in his wrinkled suit, loosened tie and ruffled hair spiking out all over the place. He looked like he just rolled out of bed which knowing him, he probably had. But whose bed she wondered before kicking herself.

Spike jerked his head up at the familiar voice, eyes widening in shock at first before his face melted into a grin.
“Judge Summers! How lovely to see you again.” He said over enthusiastically with obvious sarcasm.
“I wish I could say the same, Mr. Giles” she replied.
“Are you ready for your plea or do you need more time to keep the court and ME waiting?” she said sternly.

“I’m ready and willing, Judge. Never was one to keep a lady waiting” he smirked.
The other court room patrons chuckled. The place was packed for this high profile case.
Judge Summers was fuming inside but she pushed it back. “Let’s start with the state. Mr. Harris, go ahead”
Xander Harris, assistant D.A stood and began making his remarks.

Spike sat down at his table next to his client and said under his breath, “Stupid Git” referring to Mr. Harris.
He said it loud enough though that Judge Summers heard.
“What did you just say Mr. Giles?” she questioned him.
“Uhhh…He’s got wit…just…love the way he works a court room” Spike covered.
“Well, I am glad that you are being entertained Mr. Giles but from now on, while you’re in MY courtroom, keep your comments to yourself!” she ordered.
“Yes, Your Honor” he tilted his head to the side, a trademark for him and smiled sweetly.

on Mon Mr. Harris.” Judge Summers said.
As Xander Harris spoke, Spike leaned over to his client to apologize for being late.
“Don’t let it happen again. I’m paying you a lot of money. They say you’re the best and that’s why I came to you but I’m not impressed so far.” His client ripped him.
“You might not be impressed now but when you’re on the beach in Tahiti drinking a froufrou drink with an umbrella in it instead of being Butch’s new girlfriend in the pen, you’ll be really impressed.” Spike turned back to the bench and watched the attractive blonde sitting there.

Harris finished with, “and so Your Ho we we are charging the defendant with murder in the first degree of his wife, Mrs. Darla O’Reilly. Thank you”

“Angel O’Reilly, please stand.” Judge Summers said.
The defendant and his attorney stood.
“Having heard the charges against you, how do you plead?” Judge Summers asked.
“My client pleads NOT guilty, Your Honor.” Spike answered.
“Of course he does” she mumbled.

“The plea is entered and jury selection will begin on…” Judge Summers turned to her assistant who mouthed something to her.
“On Monday, April 12th, 2 weeks from today. This court is adjourned. I’d like to see defense counsel in chambers” she stood.
Whispers and murmurs shuffled throughout the courtroom about Mr. Giles about to get blasted by the judge for being late. Judge Summers was known for her sternness and strict adherence to courtroom etiquette.
The bailiff called out, “All rise” as she departed the courtroom and went into her chambers.

The deputy’s handcuffed Angel and escorted him out of the courtroom and back to his cell at the connecting jail house. Spike stuffed his legal briefs into his case and walked to the Judge’s chambers turning at the last minute to give the remaining people in the room a grin and a thumbs up as they laughed.
“Good going, Giles. Way to get the trial started off on the right foot.” Xander Harris said.
“Oh stick it, whelp. You’re just jealous because the Ice Queen didn’t ask YOU to come into her chambers” Spike replied suggestively, knowing full well that Xander Harris had harbored a crush on Judge Summers for years.

He found Judgmmermmers turned away from him looking out her window as he approached.
“Hello Spike” she said without turning around.
“Buffy…” he replied.
She spun around, “If you ever mock my courtroom like that again, I will fine you for contempt. You show up on time and for Christ’s sake, wear some clean clothes and brush your hair. I can’t imagine your client can be happy. This is a huge c We We all know who Angel O’Reilly is. How can you be so flip?” Buffy threw her hands up in frustration.

Spike’s eyes narrowed and without thinking, as he was apt to do, opened his big mouth, “ First: Go mock yourself. Second: I didn’t have time to get clean clothes or I would’ve been even later. Third: I know exactly who my client is. Fourth: Why do you have to be such a bloody bitch? And Fifth: Why are YOU even presiding on this case? I tht Jht Judge Rosenberg was!”

y yey yelled back, “One: Don’t you dare tell me to fuck myself! Two: If you wouldn’t have been sleeping with one of your whores maybe you wouldn’t have had to rush to get to court and not have time to stop and change clothes. Three: You’re an idiot and I have no doubt your client will soon realize that as well. Four: You think I’m a bitch? You haven’t seen nothing yet! Five: Because Willow went into labor over the weekend and she and Oz are now the proud parents of a bouncing baby girl and she will be gone for at least 12 weeks maternity leave. Six: Get your goddamned boots off my desk” Buffy finished as Spike had taken a seat and propped his feet up, crossing his arms.

“God, I almost forgot how sexy you are when you get upset” he smirked. “Is it true what they say about what Judge’s wear underneath their robes?” he taunted her.
“ARGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH. That’s it! I want you out of my face. I want you outmy cmy courtroom. I want you out of my life!” she yelled.
“Too late, luv. You already invited me in” he responded.
“Spike…don’t you understand. This is a conflict of interest. I can’t preside over a murder trial with you as the defense attorney.” She told him.
“Yes you can. No one else knows” Spike replied.
“I KNOW!” Buffy flopped down in her chair.
“Buffy, if you recuse yourself from this case, everyone will find out about….us…is that what you want?” Spike asked her.
“What I want? Don’t you mean what you want? Wouldn’t want the little wife to find out now would we?” Buffy fumed.

“Bloody hell, Buffy. You know I don’t care about that. I told you…hell…I was gonna leave her for you. YOU’RE the one who broke it off. Not me! You told me it would ruin your career if anyone found out you’d had an affair with a married man. ‘A judge’s morals and ethics are taken much more seriously than a defense attorney’s’, Remember that little speech of yours?” Spike stood.

“So who was she, Spike?” Buffy pried.
“Huh?” he replied.
“The bimbo that kept you from getting to my courtroom on time.” Buffy said.
“Why? Jealous much, Buffy?” he sneered.
“Right. Like I’d ever touch you again. God knows who you’ve been with. You probably have some kind of disease” Buffy huffed.
“Well, I’ve been with you so yeah I better have myself checked” Spike said.
“You bastard! Get out!” Buffy pointed to the door.

Spike picked up his brief case and walked to the door, “I take it this means you’re still going to preside?”
“Out! Now!” Buffy turned away.
“I thought so. See you in two weeks, pet.” He walked out.

Buffy slumped down in her chair. Conflict of interest, she sighed. Our entire relationship was a conflict of interest. She knew if she tried to recuse herself she would have to have a valid reason. If she did it they would find out that they had an affair and that would be the end of her career and the end of his marriage. She couldn’t risk it. She would have to put up with him for the next few months of this trial. She silentlrsedrsed Willow Rosenberg even though she was a good friend.

Spike stepped into the waiting room of his offices.
“Hold all my calls for the next hour, Harmony. I gotta shower and change.” He said as he passed his secretary and went into his office. He had an adjoining full ice ice bath off of it which came in handy, seeing as he spent more nights sleeping at his office on the couch than at home.
“Yes, Mr. Giles” Harmony smiled dreamily at him. Spike knew she had a crush on him. He of questionable morals however drew the line at sleeping with his own secretary. She was good at her job though so he put up with the moon eyes.
He stripped off his rumpled clothes and stepped into the shower, his thoughts drifting to a spitfire blonde in black robes.
