Chapter One

“Dawnie, come sit down” Willow said in a low voice, as she put her arm around her and led her to the sofa.


“What’s wrong” said Dawn anxiously.


“Buffy had an accident,” Anya blurted out.


“Anya!” Willow said, in a voice full of total annoyance. “I thought we said that I would talk to Dawnie”.


“Well it’s true isn’t it“, replied Anya.


Dawn sat down slowly, “ What kind of an accident”? She asked hesitantly.


Willow sat down and took her hands in hers. “Well, Buffy was coming back from her slayer thing last night. As far as I know everything was all great till this stupid car came out of nowhere and hit her.


“ Is she… Dead?” Dawnie said, feeling the tears welling up in her eyes.

“No Dawnie, she’t d’t dead,” said Willow giving her a big hug. “She is in the hospital, but she will be fine. She was tossed in the air and broke her arm and leg, and has a few other injuries, but other then that she is the same Buffy”. She looks pretty bad though. All bruises and bandages andngs;ngs; black eyes, not great to see. But she will be ok.”


“Can I see her”? asked Dawn, feeling a bit better now.


“Yes I can take you over in a while, and you can see for yourself that she is ok”.


Dawn smiled a tiny smile then. “Ok then I am going up to change, then I hope we can go”.


Willow sat down now.


“ You didn’t tell her how long it would take to get over this little accident,” said Anya.


“No I didn’t want to say any more to her now” said Willow. “I called Giles and he will be here tomorrow“.


“She isn’t going to be doing any slaying for quite a while, is she?” asked Anya.


“Nope, and that is why I called Giles” Willow replied. He will know what to do.

That evening, Dawn, Willow, and Xander went to visit Buffy. Dawn was not prepared for what she saw. As she entered the hospital room, she saw her sister lying on the bed with her head and leg and arm in huge bandages. Tubes were connected to her arms, and her face was a mass of bruises.


Dawn began to feel sick inside. She stepped up to the bed slowly. “Hi Buffy” she said in a tiny voice. Buffy opened her eyes and looked up at her beautiful little sister. She tried to reach up and touch her, but her arm didn’t want to work.


“Dawnie, she replied weakly. I’m glad to see you”. Dawn bent down and tried to hug this big mass of bandages that was her sister, but realized it wasn’t really possible. So she touched her hand and smiled down at her.

The two sisters talked for a while until the nurse came in and said they all had to leave. Willow said goodnight to Buffy and lead Dawn out of the r



“Xander,” Buffy called.


“Yep Buff,” he replied, as he returned to her bedside.


“Make sure Dawn is ok for me, will you”.


Xander assured her that he would take care of her sister. Feeling relieved now, Buffy then let herself drift off to sleep.

Chapter Two

Giles arrived the next afternoon. Dawn was at the magic shop with Anya so Willow, Giles and Xander were able to have a long talk. As soon as he was assured that Buffy was all right, Giles sat down and told Willow what was going to have to be done.


Willow was a bit surprised, but she knew Giles was right. He explained that, first of all, no one must know that The Slayer was not around now. It was imperative that her injury be kept a secret. Willow assured him that only a few nurses really knew her name. And that no one at school or anywhere else knew she was in the hospital.


“We have to make sure of this,” said Giles firmly.
“As for school and her job, we will make up something. If word gets out that the Demons can run free here in Sunnyvale we are in trouble. Now, ho han handle this depends on how bad it is right now. I understand that there has been a lot of activity every night lately, and that there is a coming threat of evil to us all.s cos couldn’t have come at a worse time. “

“I know,” said Willow. “We all know it’s bad now. Something is coming and is almost here.”


Giles sat back. “ We need a slayer here immediately,” he said firmly.


“I don’t know where Faith is anymore or I would call her,” said Willow sadly.


“Yes, I’m not very fond of Faith you know, but she is a good slayer and a good match for some of the worst demons. It’s too bad she seems to have disappeared,” said Giles.


Willow looked at Giles, “Did you know that Buffy has been training Dawn to be a slayer, to help her?”


“Yes I asked her to do this,” said Giles thoughtfully, “And this is why she is going to have to take over for her sister now. I don’t think she is ready to be out there slaying demons on her own though, do you Willow?”


“No of course not, Giles,” said Willow quickly.


“Well then, you will have to help her“. said Giles in a very firm voice.


“Me too“, said Xander. “I can help. and back her up, cant I?”


“And. I will do my magic thing too” Willow chimed in.


Giles looked at them, and told then that yes this is what had to be done now. He assured them that he would seek help from the council, but for the moment this was all they could do. He hoped they could find Faith quickly, or someone. But it was far too dangerous now to have no one patrolling every night. Once the demons determined that they were s the they would soon take over. evi evil force was too close now and had to be dealt with as well.

As night began to fall, the three sat there in the living room of the injured slayer and planned how they would manage to substitute her younger sister. Dawn had a lot to learn and not much time to take it all in. Just as they finished, the door opened and Dawn came in. Giles stood up and told her all that would now be expected of her.

Chapter Three

At first Dawn was excited. She knew she wanted to be like Buffy. But the more Giles told her about all that was expected of her, the more she began to doubt she could ever do this. Willow was there supporting her all the way as they began an extensive night of training.


The plan was to get out there tomorrow night, and make sure the demons felt her presence. The others would back her up but she would have to slay demons, and she would have to act confident and show that she was strong and unafraid.


As the night passed, Dawn became more confident. Giles was actually quite impressed at how much she had picked up from Buffy’s’ nights of training her. She was fast and alert and very flexible. She had the skills to be a good slayer, but she didn’t have the time to develop the discipline and mind control that was needed to be really good at this. This would all come with practice but there was no time. Giles hoped this would work for now. It was all he could think of. Dawn was their only hope.


As the early morning light peaked into the darkened room, the three finally concluded the training. Willow and Dawn headed to bed. Giles went to sleep on the sofa. As he drifted off, he hoped that he was doing the right thing here. Dawn was young and inexperienced. But, so was Buffy when he first met her. He was hopeful this would work out until further help arrived.

Dawn walked up the stairs with Willow. They hugged as they approached Willows’ room. “Do you mind if I come in for a bit?” asked Dawn hesitantly. Sensing that that she needed someone to give her a little bit of encouragement, Willow quickly agreed.

They sat down on the bed and pulled off their shoes. Feeling very tired now, they both lay back. Dawn curled up next to Willow so very close. Willow kept very close to Dawn. Xander scouted the area and kept them informed of any activity. Dawn soon was face to face with her first Demon alone as The Slayer.


At first she froze. Terrified. Willow was just about to rush in and try to help when suddenly Dawn came alive. She seemed to suddenly become her sister. “Ok,” said Dawn. “I am ready to get out of here”.


The three walked home, not a word was spoken. They were too tired and shaken to make polite conversation. Xander left the girls at the door and went home.

They slowly walked up the stairs to bed. Still no words were spoken. Willow reached her room and turned to Dawn. Dawn looked at her and suddenly she fell into her arms. “Willow I was so scared” she said beginning to cry.


Willow held onto her. “Lets go inside” she murmured. She opened the door and gently closed it behind her.
