It's dark.
Today was her birthday. Six. The devil's number, her mom said. Little devil firecracker girl. Running around in a t-shirt and underwear because mommy said it was okay. Little Mermaid panties.
But the birthday cake was eaten. The presents had been opened and now she sleeps with her new teddy bear clutched tightly in her arms. Bitten up baby nails digging into it's face.
Creak.
She hears him. She knows it's time.
Before she knows it he is on her in her hissing in her ear to be quiet. She bites her tongue until it bleeds and tries to block the feelings out. She forgets as soon as it happens. Innocent girl. Doesn't remember so she can't tell her mom. Too bad. Too bad.
He's so big. She's so small. Hurts. But he's done quickly and he leaves like so many others will in her life. Get some get gone. Learned from the best.
She rolls over to her side and pulls her Little Mermaid panties back on and sticks her thumb in her mouth, clutching the bear to her chest and curling her knees up to her torso.
Her voice comes out in a whisper. "Happy birthday to me. Happy birthday to me. Happy birthday dear Faith. Happy birthday to me."
She was forgetting that he said this was her present already. Fading. Can't remember because it hurts too much. Let it go. She does. She forgets.
And she floats free.
