I know your name

Buffy sat in the morning sun, watching her lover sleep. Smiling softly she decided she liked the way the redheaded woman snored. It wasn’t loud or obnoxious like Faiths snoring. But more of a soft snore.

Leaning down she softly fingered one of the woman’s long dreadlocks, she always thought dreadlocks were weird, even a little gross. But on Lonnie they suited her. Playing with a couple of the bone beads that were woven into her hair she didn’t notice Lonnie wake up.

“Having fun?” Lonnie smiled teasingly at the blonde, amused by the light blush. Nodding Buffy leaned down and kissed her softly before standing.

“When do you want to head out? I scouted up ahead a little and it looks like there may be rain later but the rivers still low enough for us to cross.” Buffy tried to ignore the light flutters in her gut when Lonnie stood and stretched…naked.

They had been up most of the night, turns out Lonnie loved kissing and Buffy couldn’t get enough of the way Lonnie tasted. Blushing when she remembered the way Lonnie and she had probably scared away half the creatures in the forest.

“Now is fine, we can make good time.” Looking up into the sky she agreed with Buffy’s assessment that it would rain, since they had been traveling she had taken to teaching the blonde how to notice subtle differences in the earth, it made tracking and trekking that much easier.

Silently the two gathered up there meager possessions, slipping her hand into Lonnie’s, they headed closer to Lonnie’s tribe…and the stones.

~Present Day: Skye~

Carefully opening her bedroom window, she winced at the light noise it made against the wood. Looking down to her door she didn’t see the hall light come on, listening carefully the only sounds she heard were Mom snoring and Chaye talking in his sleep again.

Agilely lifting one leg and putting it outside the window she climbed out, keeping a low crouch she crawled to the edge of the porch and soundlessly jumped down. Once she hit the ground she looked up and scanned first her house and then Horus’s and Dawns.

Nothing, no one was awake or at least alert of her midnight escapades. Standing she ran for the trees and kept to the shadows until she reached to gate that surrounded the entire campus. This was the tricky part, to protect the girls from outside evil Willow had put an alarm of sorts that would sound whenever anything evil came to close to the gate.

But also at the same time, there was a block on the gate after hours to keep the girls from sneaking out, luckily one of the girls had natural Wicca abilities and for the right price had sold Skye a small potion to cloak her from the magic’s around the walls.

Stepping out of the gate she walked the short distance down the street where her friends were waiting for her. Smiling she waived at Chase and Reba. They were genetic werewolves from the high school she went too. Climbing into the truck she told them both hi and settled down into her seat.

She could smell the excitement on the two, it was the first time they were going to ‘Gypsies’ a small demon bar just outside of town. She had known the two for the last few months and while Mother didn’t like her being friends with anyone other than Skin-Walkers said the were’s here were unpredictable but hell she was eighteen…almost and could be friends with whoever she wanted.

Besides they weren’t that different, yea instead of running free they locked themselves up in there basement during the full moon. Reba had told her it was because Chase had accidently changed while he was having sex with this college chick and nearly ripped her throat out…okay so Chase was a little jaded but he was cute, he had that natural feral look about him. She knew better than to have sex with a werewolf though, not this close to moon fever. That’s all she needed…mate with a werewolf.

But anyways, she and Reba talked animatedly until they rounded a corner and suddenly every hair on the back of Skye’s neck was on end. There it was, it looked like a dive to be sure. The flickering neon sign was the only light in the parking lot.

Hesitantly the three wolves stepped out of the truck. Skye knew that even though they were all wolves she was strongest and the only one that could change at will. But as much as she loved a good fight she didn’t want to ruin her new pants. ‘God im such a girl’

Wordlessly the three waked into the bar, looking around Skye realized that it was mostly vampires. ‘Great…blood rats’ the three headed for the nearest empty booth, sliding down they looked around at the place.

It was like any run of the mill dive, a dart board hung at an angle on the far wall. There were two pool tables and at the other end of the room was the bar being tended by a half breed demon. The flickering lights went unnoticed by the raucous. Demons, vampires and a few werewolves were all engaged in there own fun.

Skye looked up when she saw a….skin-walker? ‘NO WAY’ Skye looked up at the taller rangy wolf…no she wasn’t a wolf…she was a cat.

The woman was dressed in ratty jeans and a dark blue t-shirt. There was a dirty apron tied around her waist…her hair looked almost white and it hung it messy dreads in her eyes, it was almost like she didn’t want to be noticed. Skye was so entranced by the natural ferocity that she didn’t realize Reba was talking to her till the wolf kicked her shin.

“FUCK….what’d you do that for?” Skye rubbed her leg and glared daggers at the girl.

“She wants to know what we want to drink.” Looking over to Chase she realized he was trying not to smirk…and he was failing badly.

Looking back up at the woman she saw that she hadn’t moved at all. She was just standing there, “Ill have coronas.” Nodding the quiet woman wrote that down, looking over she took the other orders and turned and left.

Skye watched interestingly when she saw a little boy run out from under the bar; the tall woman said something and the boy went back under the bar.

‘Who was she?’ Skye thought the tall woman was interesting. She hadn’t ever met another skin-walker outside her family and honestly after awhile they got boring. Okay so it was funny to tease David until he sprouted hair on his face but there was only so many times she could do that.

Reba looked over at her brother and shrugged. Skye was one of the most popular girls at school and becoming friends with them had hit her status sorely but she didn’t seem to care. They knew instinctively that while Chase was male that Skye was alpha, that was a given.

They had known her for a long time and friends with her almost as long but they had never seen her stare down someone like she was the waitress.

“Skye…what is she?” Reba turned and saw the tall pale haired woman wiping down some tables.

“She’s skin-walker…but I don’t…know what breed.” Reba frowned; Skye had told her that aside from her family that there were only ten known skin walkers in the states. Skye said once she was one of a dying breed.

The worse thing about sneaking out was sneaking back in. You had to worry about mothers that were up before dawn, about running across clearings fast enough not to be spotted.

Carefully opening her bedroom window she climbed and crouched low, everything was still quiet. She could hear her brothers sitting downstairs watching Saturday morning cartoons, Mom was in the kitchen probably making breakfast and Mother was most likely long gone.

Standing she stripped out of her jeans and top and changed into pajamas, making a beeline for the bathroom to shower before anyone smelled the smoke and alcohol on her.

Stepping into the shower she turned it on to scalding and picked up her scented shampoo, hurriedly washing her hair she thought about the woman from the bar. She had tried to talk to her. She found her intriguing and very attractive. She was obviously a few years older and was anything but talkative. The only response she had gotten was a grunt or a growl.

Eventually she and her friends had left shortly before sunup…you wouldn’t believe how many demons hated sunlight or at least couldn’t be seen.

Satisfied that she had gotten the smells off her and was presentable she stepped out of the shower and looked in the mirror. She was as tall as Mother, with black hair and wavy hair like Moms. She was naturally athletic and had an animal’s metabolism.

Sighing she dressed and walked down the stairs to face another day. Ignoring the looks from her brothers she picked up Brigitte and tickled her before putting the toddler into her height chair.

Sitting down she deiced not to tell Mother about the skin-walker. Mother could be over protective and honestly she wanted to see the woman again.

*********

Buffy stood beside Lonnie at the edge of the clearing. It had taken them four days to reach the stones. Apparently they had been closer than they had thought.

Swallowing she looked over at her solemn lover. She had to do this; her place was back in New York with the other slayers, with her family. Not here…but if that was true. Why did she feel so sad?

“There is a cave over the hill…if for some reason it does not work I will be there until the sun rises.” Lonnie refused to meet her eyes as she pulled away and walked into the trees.

Buffy turned and looked at the stones...walking to the stones she studied them. Nothing out of place, nothing unusual except for the symbols carved on each surface of the stone.

Sitting down on a fallen log she waited for some amazing epiphany. Something to tell her that going back was the right thing to do. That her destiny was back in her old life…not this one.

As the hours passed she didn’t see the sun set, didn’t notice the animals that shifted nervously around her. She just stared at the stones, occasionally she looked over to the spot in the trees that Lonnie had disappeared into.

‘Why was this so hard?’ She had the way home right in front of her. But if that was true, why did she feel so sick about leaving?

Finally when she could see the sun beginning to rise she knew what she had to do. She had been over and over this all night. She was tired. As she rose she said goodbye to radios and TVs. To pizza and ice cream, to Dawn and her family. She knew they would be okay, they had each other.

For the first time she made a choice that wasn’t good for everyone else. There was Faith and if not her then there were thousands of other slayers out there. But she knew her place was here, beside Lonnie.

Turning she went into the trees, walking down the trail she followed Lonnie’s tracks to a small cave, stepping in she looked down at her sleeping lover.

She felt her heartstrings pull when she saw the dried tear tracks down Lonnie’s cheeks.

Laying her hand down on the girl’s cheek, she was unprepared when Lonnie jolted and in a defensive move rolled herself on top of Buffy.

Any other time Buffy would have laughed at the stunned look on Lonnie’s face. Smiling she wiped the tears away from the girls eyes.

“Happy to see me?” Buffy said teasingly.

Lonnie couldn’t believe it; she had been so sure the girl would leave. Leaning down she crashed her lips into the slayers, pulling away she looked down at the girl. Still unable to believe she had stayed.

“Okay, im still here and im not leaving you. But there is ONE thing…repeat after me…Buffy. My name is Buffy.” Lonnie laughed and kissed the slayer again.

“Buffy…I know your name.” Lonnie whispered against the girls lips.

Smiling Buffy knew she had made the right choice. Wrapping her arms around the girl’s neck she returned the cavewoman’s kiss.
