They were back at their restaurant, sitting at their table. It was funny, they’d only been here once before but already Xander thought of the place as theirs. This time Xander ordered chicken fettuccini Alfredo with a side salad at Spike’s pointed look. Spike ordered a cheeseburger and fries with gravy and his own side salad. Neither one of them spoke until the food arrived.
When the waiter finally put their meals on the table and refreshed their drinks Xander stared dumbly at his plate. Spike poked him with his own fork until Xander started picking at his salad.
“I’m not angry with you Xan.”
“N-no? I let you down, Spike. I probably pissed off your boss, made you look like a liar. I’d be mad at me if I was you.”
“Xan, I’m not angry. A little confused, maybe… apprehensive. I knew you liked the ladies but I thought you’d be able to fake it with the men. Didn’t think you’d be that bothered by another bloke touchin’ you, ‘specially after the dance an’ the work up to it.” He nibbled a fry daintily, looking up at Xander from under his lashes.
Xander chewed a leaf of lettuce and replied to the only part he felt comfortable talking about. “Apprehensive? What’ve you got to be apprehensive about? You aren’t breaking the law or anything, not gonna get the cops. Besides, you’re helping me out. Why would I try to get you in trouble if you’re helping me out?”
“Apprehensive cos the only other reason I could think of for you runnin’ off like that was you bein’ spooked by the thought o’ bein’ touched by a man. You turned all green and white. Thought you were gonna hurl or something,” he dug into his salad and spoke so softly it almost wasn’t heard over the rustling of the leaves. “Was worried that was how you felt about… well, all of it.” He chewed his forkful, eyes downcast into his meal, to keep from looking at Xander in the eye.
Xander pushed his full plates away and took a deep breath, trying to find some way to say this that would be… easier. Easier on him, easier on Spike. Heaving a sigh, he decided to take the bull by the horns and just say it. He didn’t have to explain everything in detail, but he owed Spike some kind of explanation, after everything he’d done for him.
Xander took another deep breath, letting it out slowly. He kept his eyes on the little cherry tomato at the top of his salad and watched it tremble, trying to decide if it should fall off the peak or stay at the top where it was. Spike stabbed into his salad and the tomato made up its mind, tumbling into a puddle of ranch dressing. He took it as a signal and looked up into Spike’s startlingly blue eyes. This wasn’t how he’d planned it, the first person he’d ever told. He’d almost told Jessie once but he’d been killed before Xander got up the courage. A part of him knew Spike deserved some explanation, because the only other one was that Xander was homophobic, and that was so far from the mark.
He took a deep breath and let it out slowly, letting the words form themselves of his exhalation, trying to keep himself somewhat distanced. “Spike… I’m gay.”
