Chapter 8

Chapter 8

Joyce sat quietly at the dining room table, sipping tea as she stared out the window. Buffy came down quietly, her hair in a ponytail and headed for the door, “Errands?”

Her daughter froze for a moment, but that stubborn face of resolve left her little doubt her little girl didn’t have a purpose. She shrugged and tried to act nonchalant, “Just a few loose ends to tie up.”

Raising an eyebrow, “I may be your mother but I am not now nor have I ever been fooled by your lying.”

Buffy crossed her arms, “Blood on my clothes? Gangs on PCP?”

Sighing, “You’re never going to forgive me for that, are you?”

Groaning, “Mom, come on. I was a teenager. I understand. I’m a big girl now and this stuff is just...it’s nothing to do with slaying, okay?”

Nodding, “Oh, I know that. It’s about Spike, right?”

Looking grim, “It’s nothing you want to know about.” Joyce looked about to object but something made her pause. In the end she just quietly nodded and watched her little girl walk out the door, silently wondering when she’d grown up.

Buffy left the house early and with purpose. It was a Saturday and currently Spike was still sleeping. She’d woken him up to tell him she would be leaving briefly and left him curled up with her stuffed pig Mr. Gordo. She got the sinking feeling she may not be getting her beloved childhood possession back. But that was okay, it was going to someone who needed a cuddle. Mentally she reminded herself to give him one when she got back.
Cutting through the park and across Main Street, she ducked into the SuperMart and made her way to the back meat counter. She smiled at the man behind the counter and whipped out a piece of paper. On it was printed a name she'd been sure to write down, “I’m looking for Carl.”

The butcher gave her a smirking grin, crossed with a leer, “That’s me, cupcake.”

Smiling sweetly, “Do you sell blood?”

He nodded a little, “I’ve got something special for a little immortal like you.”

Growling softly, she grabbed him by his greasy shirt and pulled his overweight self over the counter and to the floor on the other side. Picking him up and slamming him into the shelving, “I heard you sell your customers out for money. Not a great idea, Carly.” He put up his hands in protest, trying to disagree as she used a fraction of her strength to pound some fear into him, “Let me tell you about the customer I was thinking of. Blonde hair, 5'10", trench coat, great bod, tight ass.. goes by Spike...” He nodded quickly, flinching from her next series of hits and slaps, “He wasn’t hurting anybody and you sold him out to a bunch of vamp jerks for a few dollars!” She reduced him to a whimpering mass in no time without actually hurting him, glad that there were no customers. Even if there had been she’d probably beaten him up anyway. Leaning down over his bruised, prone form and leveling him with a look, “Spike is mine. And if you ever even attempt to betray him or me again, I’ll put you in traction.” Then she turned, as simply as that, and strode confidently for the door.

Fearing for his life, “Miss!” She paused but didn’t turn, “T-they’re g-gonna attempt it...again.”

She turned slowly and leveled him with an evil glare. She hated guys like this, spineless jellyfish. Even worse were ones with no code of conduct. That's what pissed her off the most about Angelus. He'd use his invite to prey on her in her home. It's one of the reasons Spike always had an invite. She knew he would never attack her on her turf, “Who, where, and when?”

Buffy tapped on her stake, hiding in the tall tree next to her window. Willow and Tara were hanging out not too far away, both of them focused on each other to keep the magic between them cooking. Her mom in the living room with Spike, keeping him company with television and popcorn. She’d already decreed that he would never know about this, knowing it could seriously stunt his progress. It did mean she’d had to sit down for a bit of a talk with her mom and gleam over a few things after a thorough promise that this didn’t get back to Giles.

Raising up just a little, coiling her muscles as a group of vampires approached the house. Her eyes narrowed in anger at their presumptuousness, not believing that they would dare to come to her home. Yet here they were but she was more than ready for them.

In the shadows Giles watched this silently. He hadn’t been told about the raid or the subsequent army of defense. It hurt his pride that his slayer no longer confided in him and it angered him that a demon had taken his place as confidant. So instead, he’d followed as back up but vowed not to interfere unless absolutely necessary.

The demons were quietly focused. Their master had forbid this and the Beta had dusted him, becoming Alpha and decreeing Spike must be finished off. The two witches cast their first spell, snatching away the demons’ voices so this would be a silent fight. At their nod she leapt to the ground and ate up the distance, kicking out at the nearest one and staking another. The vampires all scattered, one of them running for the sewers while the rest squared off warily against her.

Her face remained fixed and grim as she met each opponent and quickly defeated them. Then she was down to just one and with a growl she yanked him close, bringing the stake to his chest, “You’re going to deliver a message for me. Either you tell everybody or I drop your ashes as the message.” His hands were already up, coward that he was and she grinned nastily, “You’re going to spread the word...Spike is mine. I'm the slayer and this is my Hellmouth. You have a problem with that, you see me in the cemetery, but you do not come near this house. And if there are any future attempts on my home or my vampire, I’ll destroy every fucking demon in this town.” She leveled him with a look that spoke of her seriousness, “Now get.” And she kicked him in the ass to send him scampering.

She watched him go. Then thanked her friends for their help and walked them home. Once she got back to her own house she even remembered to give Spike that cuddle before going to bed. Buffy frowned to herself as she watched Spike duck his head down before disappearing into the basement. As soon as the hug was over he starts with the avoidance. Now that she was thinking about it, he did it all the time. Mom, her, Willow...but not Tara. She debated on asking him about it, not even sure that he was aware he was doing it. Sighing and
deciding it was unimportant, she let it drop for now.
