Chapter 9

The sound of the alarm going off startled me awake. “We’ve been invaded!” I exclaimed, jumping out of bed in my pajamas and rushing out of my room. Demons were everywhere, the same ones that had killed Lexi. Everyone able to fight, Watchers and Potentials alike, were battling. I saw Ellie and Spike in the throes of a fight and my heart jumped into my throat.

I ran down the corridor to get down to them and help them all I could. As demons came at me, I would mumble incantations that would render them unable to fight or I would engulf them in flames, making my way to the sides of Spike and Ellie; I incinerated one demon that was looming over her because Spike was busy with a demon of his own.

“Great timing Will.” She said as she got back up. The three of us formed a triangle in order to watch one another’s backs.

The battle continued for a while longer before one demon yelled above the din. “Let’s go!” and the entire fleet retreated. That’s when we began to assess our damages to the ranks. We lost a total of seven girls and three Watchers and many more were injured. Just when I thought our losses could get no worse, one of the girls came running up the stairs.

“They’re gone!” she exclaimed panicked. We all turned to her. “Buffy and Angel are missing.” She repeated. My face drained of color, as I’m sure many others did as well. I looked over at Ellie who was looking at the bodies strewn around the room, her eyes brimming with tears, but not a single one fell down her face. It was the most emotion I had ever seen her portray, but even as I had these thoughts, I watched as Ellie the girl fell away like a watercolor painting in the rain, and what was left was the cold and determined Slayer Ellie.

“Let’s go get them then. Willow, scrye for them. Watchers, let us know what we’ll be up against and the easiest way to kill these monsters.” She dictated; an aura of power emanating from her and no one questioned her authority but rather got straight to the tasks told them. “All full-fledged Slayers will be needed, so go up to your rooms and get ready for a battle.” She said as she went down to her own living quarters. I looked at Spike who was helping move the bodies and I sighed. More girls lost to the Cause. And I went to go look for the location of Buffy and Angel.

Closing the door behind me and beginning the process of scrying, I had zoned in on an area just outside of the northern city limits when Ellie came into the room, throwing the door open. I started at the noise and looked at her dour facial features.

“You find them yet?” she demanded with her hands on her hips. I could feel her aura pulsating with anger and pain and I could merely nod and back away from her as she approached the map where the crystal was laying. She took one look, nodded and turned on her heel, leaving the room. As soon as she exited the room it felt as if I could breathe again and I grasped onto the table edge with my hand and tried to catch my breath, it was in this state that Spike happened to see me in as he walked past.

“Red? What’s wrong? Are you alright?” he asked, his hand gently on my shoulder.

“It’s Ellie…” I started, looking at him, “I’ve never felt something so… suffocating and dark in my life since that time when I…” and I blushed, “well, you know.” He nodded in understanding. “Spike,” I said grasping his hand, “I’m scared for her… I don’t know what’s wrong with her or if there’s any way we could help her out.”

He smiled reassuringly. “Don’t worry Red, I’ll find out what’s bugging her after we find Buffy and Angel.” And he gave me a hug.

“Miss Willow!” a Potential came running in. “Miss Willow, she’s gone.” I could feel Spike stiffen.

“Who’s gone Rosa?” I asked.

“Ellie.” The name had barely left her lips and Spike was already out the door. I ran after him, stopping in the middle of the lobby where I saw him already walking outside and disappearing into the night.

“Spike!” he paused. “Wait for the others, please.” I implored of him. He didn’t even turn around to acknowledge my request, or me, but continued walking out into the nighttime.
