Chapter Nine

Chapter 9

Giles sat at his table on Halloween 2000. To be more truthful, it was actually the morning after Halloween, because he couldn’t sleep. Something was nagging at his brain. He was perusing the books he had brought home with him from the Magic Shop so he could search for the entity known as That Which Cannot Be Named. They had had no luck, and he had sent everyone home to study on his own. Hearing the tea kettle, he went to the kitchen, reading a book about some druids that worshipped dead gods in 90 B.C.. Steeping his leaves, he turned them with one hand, while turning pages with another. When it was ready, he went back to the table and got comfortable.

The phone rang.

He looked at his watch.

It was 3:21 a.m..

Who would be calling him at this time?

Only one name came to mind. Spike.

Everyone had dismissed Spike’s leaving to mean that he was going back to the future where he belonged, but unfortunately, he had only gotten as far as a small town in Iowa.

Burr Oak to be exact.

And it wasn’t that much of a town, Giles had even visited once.

He grabbed the phone on the 3rd ring. “He-hello?”

“Watcher.”

“Spike, how great to hear from you. How is the autumn weather there?”

“Just puppies and kitties here, how’s my girl?” He sounded sad, like always.

“She’s fine. Actually, our Spike and Buffy are getting along rather, well. Well, that isn’t true. He tried to kill her the other night. Had some notion to get the chip out. Pillock.” He paused. “Sorry. Forgot who I was referring to.”

There was a deep sigh on the other end. “I need your help. First though, I want you to come answer your door.”

A knock sounded. Giles shook his head and hung up.

“Come in, please.” He held it open for Spike, who was wearing his traditional black on black ensemble.

Carrying in his luggage, he put it in the corner by the couch. “I’ll only be staying for the next few days, long enough to take care of some business.” Smoothing his hands down his pants, he went to the kitchen to warm up the only bag of blood left in the freezer. He had left it there a couple of weeks ago, knowing he’d be back soon.

“What exactly are you doing this time, Spike?” Giles started to clean his glasses.

“I’m looking for the same bloke you are. The one that freaks when he’s around the Dagon Sphere. Am I right?” He raised his eyebrow. The microwave beeped and Spike grabbed a smiley cup from the cupboard. Opening it, he continued, “I think I’ll need your help, but first, I eat and then go see her.”

“I think she’s at home with Joyce. You can call and see if she’s up, if you want.” Giles placed the glasses back on the bridge of his nose and smiled. “It’s good to have you back.”

“Good to be back.” Throwing back his blood, he rinsed out his cup and left it in the sink.

“What did he wear today, do you know?” He walked to the suitcase, rummaging for something to change into.

“Same outfit, minus the red shirt. This one was a dark green—not wait, navy blue.”

Spike pulled said shirt out of the case. “Right. Be back in a while. Don’t wait up.”

Buffy sat on the porch looking out at nothing. The nights were so long, with all the things she had to think about. Her mom was sick; Spike was trying to kill her again. The last thought made her laugh. Well, things weren’t so bad. At least one thing remained constant.

Shaking her head, she stood up to stretch and then head inside. She heard a sound and turned back to the street. Spike, in all his glory, stood there, his head tilted just so. Great.

“What now? Want to come in and test the theory of the revocation of the invite?” She placed her hands on her hips.

“Hello, Buffy. Came to chat.” He smiled. A nice smile.

She rolled her eyes and sat back down on the stair. “I really don’t have time for this. What do you want?”

He walked, no, slinked over to her in a fluid motion. He looked at the stair next to her, maybe looking for an invitation to sit.

“I don’t think so. Do you not recall only days ago trying to kill me?” She gave him an incredulous look. “Go find someone else to bother.”

He sat anyway. “Do you like to piss me off? I mean, cause really. You are doing such a great job right now.” She looked away.

A cold hand turned her face to look at him. “I want to help you.”

She smiled. “Really? I know one way you can do it in the next few minutes, and God, that would be a great help.”

He was serious. “Something’s coming. Something bad. I want to help you. All you have to do is tell me I can, and I’ll take care of it for you.”

“You are Spike? Right?” She was getting wigged now. And when did his eyes get that blue?

“Listen, pet, I don’t have all the time in the world right now. I need an answer, right now-like.” He set his jaw and placed his hand on hers in her lap.

She didn’t even notice. “Okay, you can help.” She scooted toward him a little.

“Good. Now, I have to go, but you’ll see me soon. I promise.” He tilted his head to take her in, savoring the time spent with her. It had been so long since he’d touched her, felt her warmth. Leaning in to her, he looked at her lips. She had a blank face; he didn’t know what to do.

She leaned in for him and placed the smallest of kisses on his lips. Immediately, she pulled away, shaking herself out of the dream she’d put herself in. She mumbled something under her breath.

“What’s that love?” He leaned in again.

“I said I must be out my mind! I can’t” and in a whisper “kiss you!” She stood up, ready to head back inside. “I was thinking about someone else. Leave!” She walked up and grabbed the door.

He caught her, blocking it with his body. “Do you know what you do to me, Slayer?”

She shook her head slowly.

“You make me feel like I’m alive.” He pulled her into his arms and kissed her thoroughly, something he hadn’t been able to do in a very, very long time. “I love you, and if I deny it later, you’ll know the truth.”

In a small voice she said, “But I love Riley.”

“No, you don’t but thanks for saying it. I’m in your blood, like you’re in mine. That’s why neither of us is dead right now.” He paused to pull her into a tight hug. “That’s why you’re not telling me to leave again. You need me, like you need air.”

He let her go, and she noticed a lonely teardrop slide down his cheek. “I’ll miss you every minute we’re apart.” With that, he walked away into the night, and she headed inside. Turning one more time, she saw him disappear and she actually cried.

For him, for them, for herself.
