Chapter 8
WARNING: There is Het in this chappy. Not a bunch, but if you'll stick w/ me, you'll see it's necessary! *g*
NOTE: I haven't done a good job of showing time passage...William is nearing 16 here (Xander's 13).
Chapter 8
William shut the front door behind him with a sigh of relief. He’d made it out of the house, relatively unscathed. He was desperate to brush his teeth, but wouldn’t set foot back in the house for fear that he wouldn’t be allowed to leave again. Smoothing his hair and wiping a few tears from his eyes, he set off for the theatre, stopping at a convenience store for a pack of gum. He’d chewed three pieces by the time he reached the cinema.
He entered the lobby and made his way to the pre-arranged meeting spot next to the bathrooms. Waiting in such a high-traffic area proved to be a mistake; William had been bumped, pushed, jostled and stepped on in a matter of moments. When a large, angry-looking man headed his way, he backpedaled quickly until he impacted with something. The man, unconcerned with William, entered the men’s restroom, and William spun around to see who or what he’d backed into.
“I’m sor…”
It was her. He felt a blush creeping up his neck, and ducked his head so she wouldn’t notice.
“Hi.” “Hi.”
She smiled at him, and William felt his face come to life in a matching grin.
They stared at each other’s feet until William was bumped again, colliding with Buffy and nearly stumbling into the ladies’ restroom. Smoothing his hair in what he hoped was a “cool” gesture, he caught Buffy’s eye again and couldn’t help but grin sheepishly. He wracked his brain for something to say.
“So..Uh..Tickets?”
She grinned, bobbing her head.
He let Buffy pick, not noting which one she’d chosen – he was too transfixed by the way her hair blew in the slight breeze. He only caught snatches of her explanation, something to do with dreams, love and Hugh Grant. Entering the lobby once again, they elected to share a bucket of popcorn, and with the purchase of two drinks and a box of Junior Mints, they entered the theatre.
Twenty minutes into the movie, their hands brushed together in the popcorn bowl. William wasn’t sure exactly who had moved first, but their hands were suddenly clasped together, fingelipplippery with butter and salt. He risked a glance over at his date. She was doing the same and met his gaze. As he answered her grin with one of his own, he noticed a strand of hair that had escaped her ponytail. He watched it, glowing with the flickering of the movie projector, and longed to touch it. Leaning over to brush it away from her face, William jarred the popcorn bucket and it went flying, scattering popcorn over Buffy and himself and the three people seated immediately in front of them.
“Bloody…” He clamped a hand over his mouth, muttering apologies.
Buffy giggled.
He pulled away from her, folding his hands in his lap, and hoped the low lighting hid his blush. He remained like that until the end of the film.
