Chapter 7

Chapter 7

Willow handed Spike his mug and he’d nodded his thanks to her, just staring into the cup. It wasn’t a completely odd reaction, the blond vampire looking tired even though he’d been sleeping heavily all day. When she touched his shoulder to give him a reassuring touch he’d jerked away violently, letting the mug fall to the floor. Without thinking Willow snapped her fingers and the mug appeared in her hands, not staining the rug. His eyes flashed gold as he looked at the redhead mistrustfully, baring his fangs ever so slightly.

“Spike!” His head jerked around to Buffy who was staring at him in shock, uncertain what to make of his actions. He jumped up and hissed at her, eyes lighting with animalistic fear. He made a beeline for the stairs but Buffy cut him off, holding him tightly.

He struggled against her, trying to escape but she stubbornly held on. After a few minutes he stopped resisting and they sank to the ground, “Calm down, Spike...relax a little...” He squirmed, making soft cat-like mewls of distress, “It’s okay...” From within her a soft growl rolled through both of them and he shuddered slightly, the golden gleam leaving his eyes as his demon calmed. It took him a moment to get his bearings and he looked mostly confused. Leaning close and gently holding his head in her hands, “You just blinked out for a minute. Nothing to panic about.”

Buffy didn’t know what it all meant but she was determined she would find out. But not now. He wasn’t up for questions. After resituating him on the couch and getting some blood into him, she waited until he was asleep before pulling Willow aside. The little witch looked concerned, “His demon?”

The blond nodded, “Yeah, I think it took control but he seems okay. Got me why he wigged.”

The redhead nibbled on her lip for a moment, “Maybe it’s the whole touching thing. Has he done this before?”

Shaking her head, “No.” In all honesty, Buffy wasn’t too sure it had any thing to do with her friend touching him but again, it was a question only he could answer.

“What snapped him out of it?”

Shaking her head again, her instincts pulling her to his side, “I don’t know.”

“Buffy...is he supposed to be sleeping this much?”

They’d all noticed how much he slept. Giles had assured all the ladies it was quite normal for vampires to sleep the day away but they knew he was sleeping nights, too. In fact out of a twenty-four hour day he was sleeping more than twenty and that disturbed them both, “I don’t think so. And I don’t like it.”

“He’s like spazzy, right? Like me?”

Smirking, “You are not a spaz, Will.” The redhead raised an eyebrow, “You’re getting better...but I get your point. He only slept like five or six hours before.” The other eyebrow went up and she got defensive, “I asked mom!”

Willow gave her an indulgent smile, “Yeah. Sure Buffy.”

Pouting, “I don’t like him like that.”

Snorting at her best friend, “You so want him Buffy. You’re at the observe-everything-about-him-undress-him-with-your-eyes-and-worship-him-with-your-tongue stage.” Buffy blushed bright red and sputtered in denial. And silently doing everything the redhead was accusing her of doing. Giving her best friend a patronizing pat on the back, “It’s okay, Buffy, we’ll save you from the sexy Spike monster.”

Glaring, “Help or shut up Wicca.”

Willow sighed with a giggle, glancing at her backpack, “I could do a spell...see if there’s something wrong.” Buffy immediately agreed and the Wiccan scooted over, taking out a wrapped up herb, “I’ll start with a basic tamper spell. That’ll let me know if there’s anything here that shouldn’t be.” She waved it around the vampire and whispered in Latin. Nothing changed around him but what was interesting was the cup of leftover blood. It immediately started to glow green and both girls looked at one another. The redhead cracked open her spell book, looking up the color and verifying to be sure. Willow sighed, “It’s drugged.” Buffy’s eyes narrowed just a little and she dug around in the fridge, taking out a bag of blood. When she held it out Willow whispered quietly and the same green glow happened again. The redhead nibbled on her lip, “Your mom?”

Buffy slowly shook her head, “No.”

“So.. where did the blood come from?”

“Giles.”

Buffy knocked slightly on Giles’ door before pushing it open, seeing her watcher bent over a few books. She tossed the contents of her backpack on the floor, he looking up in surprise, “No more drugged blood, Giles. If you’re not going to help then fine but leave him alone.”

Adjusting his glasses, “Buffy, I’m trying to help.”

Hands on her hips, empty backpack slung over her shoulder, “How? By drugging him and lying to me? How is that possibly helping him?”

Giving her a more direct look, “You had stated he was having night terrors, yes? Horrible ones if I
remember your descriptions.”

She shuddered to herself, having been witness to a few of them. In the days that had followed, she’d been a visitor to more than one of his dreams, making a peaceful night difficult for either of them, “Yes.”

“The drugs would make it impossible for his body to enter REM state. Without it there are no dreams.”

Shaking her head, “And he’s not getting better, he’s getting worse.”

Sitting up straighter, “Oh?”

Pursing her lips, “His demon, Giles. I don’t know if vampires need dreams like people do but he freaked out in a major way this afternoon.”

Rising to his feet, “Was anyone hurt?”

“No. Thankfully I was there but he went all demoney, no Spike.”

Sliding off his glasses, his mind alight with alarm, “Are you saying he went feral?” Chipped or not, Spike could be a true danger if that were true. A feral demon would not hesitate because of pain in attacking.

Shrugging, “I’m saying that for a minute there was no Spike, just a demon with just his instincts. But then he snapped back like a rubber band and he didn’t remember any of it.” Turning around to leave before looking back over her shoulder, “I get that you’re trying to help. But I’m doing this my way for now. If he does it again then I was wrong but no more drugs, Giles. Cool?” Silently her watcher nodded and with a small smile she slipped back into the late afternoon light.
