Chapter 8
After a light lunch with Riley and a bit of shopping, Riley dropped her off at her mother’s house. She walked in the front door and called out her arrival. No answer. She shut the door and walked into the entry way. She glanced into the living room and saw her mother lying on the couch.
“Mom? Are you okay?” Buffy moved closer to the couch. She shook her mother’s shoulder. “Mommy!” Buffy said louder.
Joyce shook herself awake. Her eyes sprang open to see Buffy. “Oh, Buffy. Hi!”
Buffy took a sharp intake of breath, relieved that it wasn’t the worst. “Mom, you scared me.”
“I’m sorry, honey. I was just tired, needed to lie down for a bit,” Joyce reassured her as she sat up.
Buffy smiled and sat beside her. She wrapped an arm around her mother’s shoulder. “So, mom what do you want to do? You have me to yourself the whole day.”
“Oh, I don’t know. How about we bake those chocolate chip cookies you like so much?” Joyce suggested.
“Sure, Mom.” Buffy said. She got up, helped her mother to stand and went to the kitchen with her.
Buffy and Joyce spent their visit with each other discussing their lives outside of the house and eating the cookies they baked. Joyce had given her a tray of cookies to take home with her. Not a word was said about Spike or Riley the entire visit until Riley came to pick Buffy up and take her home.
When the sun went down, Spike left his crypt with a flashlight to search for a way to get back into the burned out Initiative. He was going to find out what was going with Riley once and for all. He doubted Buffy knew everything. But he would find out hopefully before Riley ended up killing the Slayer in his madness.
He found the entrance he had used to escape before. He opened it and dropped down into the dark hole. The fall was short but hard when one wasn’t prepared for the drop. Spike picked himself up and turned the flashlight on. He pointed it in the direction he thought the medical lab was in and started the long trek.
When he got to the lab, he searched through all the files until he found those that pertained to Riley Finn. He grabbed the files and headed out of the Initiative, not bothering to look them over right then. He didn’t feel like staying in the place that neutered him. He’d read the files at home. He clutched files and left, trying to get out of the place as fast as he could.
Buffy got real uneasy. Riley’s silence meant something was wrong with him. She couldn’t gauge his mood. Buffy thought over Riley’s behavior in the car on the ride home since he refused to speak to her at all. His moods had been getting worse since the Initiative War. Post-Traumatic Stress, maybe? Was he still taking the drugs Professor Walsh had him on? So many factors in question and no real answers came to her.
Riley parked the car near their apartment and followed her inside. On the ride from Joyce’s house, Riley could smell the cigarette and leather odor since the Magic Box. It could only be one person. He knew Joyce didn’t smoke. So when did Buffy meet the vampire? At the Magic Shop? Or did she even stay with her mother the entire day? She wouldn’t be going against his orders not to see the HST, would she?
Riley watched Buffy as she set the cookies down on the counter. He stood at the counter and watched her piddle around the kitchen. He ground his teeth of her thinking about Spike. The vampire should have been dead long ago. Chip or no chip. But no, Buffy gave William the Bloody mercy. “So what did you do today?” Riley asked with a dead calm.
“Well, I went to the Magic Box. I reported to Giles about those two vamps I dusted. I trained in the backroom, and after the lunch with you, I stayed home with my mother and baked cookies and had a mother-daughter bonding day. How about you?” Buffy stammered through a recollection of her day, missing the part that included Spike.
Riley worked his jaw. She was holding something back. He knew it. He was not paranoid. Graham may have thought he was, but he was not paranoid over his girlfriend and the blond vampire. He just couldn’t stand the thought of his girlfriend wasting her time on the demon when she should be with him. She should be thinking about Riley, not Spike. She should dream of Riley, not Spike. She was Riley’s property and he was going to keep it that way, by damn.
Riley walked over to her and pressed her back against the counter before kissing her hard. When that got no response, he hugged her tight around the waist until she gasped and then plunged his tongue into her mouth. He ran his tongue over the soft flesh. No response. He pulled away from her. “Are you just a cold heartless bitch to me, or is it everyone?” Riley ground out.
“I don’t know what you mean, Riley.” Buffy was confused.
“I can smell him on you – again. Do you like to disobey me? What the hell is it about Spike that turns you off to me, Buffy?” Riley’s fingers caressed her shoulder and throat. He rubbed his thumb against the soft flesh of her throat.
Buffy tried to ready herself for the onslaught. “Riley I didn’t disobey you. I can’t help where I meet Spike. He just came into the Magic Box. I didn’t do what you’re accusing me of,” Buffy tried to explain and defend her actions all at once.
“Ah. So you have seen him today. You know I won’t share you right? I can’t allow Spike to take my girl.” Riley growled.
Buffy shuddered and back away from Riley as far as she could go. But in the process she let her defenses down and didn’t see the open hand coming. The slap stunned her. When he hooked his foot around her ankle, she fell to the floor. He straddled her hips and wrapped his hands around her throat, squeezing a bit until there was little air to breathe. She writhed and bucked under him trying to throw him off her. She dug her nails into his wrists. Finally balled up her fist and punched him in the side with all her strength.
Riley growled at the punch, but didn’t stop. One hand traveled from her throat to her breast and molded around the mound. He tweaked the nipple hard and heard her muffled cry of pain. He felt her up as much as he possibly could before looking her straight in the eyes. “Are you going to do what I say now?” Riley asked menacingly.
Buffy nodded and he loosened his grip on her throat. When she had a bit of freedom she bucked him off her. When he rolled away she got to her feet and rubbed her throat. She glared down at him with anger in her eyes. She dared not speak though. Her throat hurt too much to try. She stared at Riley on the floor and ran out of the kitchen before he could get up, slamming the door on the way out of the apartment.
Buffy didn’t know where she was going, someplace where Riley wouldn’t think to look for her first. She rubbed her throat during the search. Her throat felt raw like she had strep throat. Riley had just snapped. But it was normal right? A normal couple had their ups and downs. Their relationship was normal.
Buffy found herself outside Spike’s crypt. She opened the door and walked in, shutting the door behind her. The room was lit with candles. It was quiet with no sign of Spike on the top level. She put her bag on the sarcophagus and looked around the room. She had her back turned when the trap door opened and Spike came out of the lower level. “Hello, pet,” he purred.
Buffy started at the sound of Spike’s voice breaking the silence. She turned to see him shutting the trap door. Her eyes caressed his body as the muscles under his shirt moved. For a vampire, Spike was quite handsome – sexy even. Why was she even here? Because Riley wouldn’t think she’d dare defy him and come here after what happened. At least not yet.
Spike slowly walked toward her with his head cocked to the side. “Buffy, is everything okay?”
Buffy looked up into his beautiful blue eyes. She saw his caring in their depths. She couldn’t lie to him. She didn’t have to say anything, just show him. She moved over to a candle that had the biggest flame. She looked to see that Spike followed her. When he stood in front of her, she raised her face to the ceiling showing Spike her throat.
Spike’s demon simmered at the thought of the proffered throat, but the William in him reacted to the bruises on her neck. His demon growled at the sight of the marks on her flesh. He raised his hand, tentatively touched her skin. He felt her tense and try to swallow when his thumb caressed over Riley’s bruises.
“Buffy, I’m not going to hurt you. I’m just looking, pet,” Spike said soothingly.
“Sorry,” Buffy whispered hoarsely.
Buffy wanted to cry at the tender way Spike touched her. Her skin hummed as his fingers caressed her throat. She closed her eyes and concentrated on his soothing touch. His cool fingers felt really good on her bruised neck.
“Buffy, are there anymore?” Spike asked as he examined her.
“No,” Buffy whispered hoarsely.
“Okay, pet. Wait here. I’ll be back,” Spike said, going to his kitchenette to get an ice pack and coming back to her. “Come on, Buffy. You can rest in the bed downstairs. I’ll take the sarcophagus.”
Spike took her hand in his and helped Buffy down the ladder and got her comfortably tucked in bed. He reached over for a cloth, coming up with a t-shirt. He wrapped the ice pack in his shirt and laid it across her throat. She closed her eyes to the soothing relief. “You’re safe here, get some sleep.”
Spike looked down at her. His Buffy. His slayer was being manhandled by a scientifically enhanced oversized brute. He wanted to cry. She could fight demons like himself, but she was no match for a human machine like Riley. She had defeated Adam, but she did that with the help of the Scooby gang. Riley was still human on steroids and she was alone in this fight. He sighed, kissed her forehead and climbed up the ladder to sleep on the hard sarcophagus.
Buffy fell into a peaceful sleep. Then the dreams started. Dreams of Spike loving her, protecting her. And Angelus. Angelus was in her dreams. Only this time he didn’t frighten her. He was avenging her. But she didn’t know what from.
When Spike woke up, he could smell the sun. He reached out with his senses and knew Buffy was gone. He felt the loss deeply. He loved her. He got up from the sarcophagus and went downstairs to sleep in the bed that still carried her scent.
From that night on Buffy made nightly visits to Spike after Riley beat her. He cared for her wounds and let her spend the night alone in his bed while he slept on the sarcophagus. In the morning she’d be gone. He worried more and more about her. He didn’t know if her psyche would fall under the pressure.
