End of Chapter 7
Angel smiled sadly his gaze flickering toward the door, he had no idea what the note said but after reading it there was some life back in Wesley’s gaze. For that alone he was willing to be left in the dark.
Wesley sat down in the park bench. The note hadn’t been long just simple and to the point and written by an elegant hand.
“You were right. I don’t deserve this gift, but I will someday. Thank you.”
Chapter 8: Finding Yourself
Lilah smirked as Lindsey stormed out of his office to his assistant’s desk.
“Get Adrian on the line immediately.” Lindsey raked his fingers through his hair. The location of the amulet had burned down yet he still didn’t have the Amulet in his hand which worried him. It wasn’t that the senior partners were breathing down his neck, he had no idea if Synn was dead or alive. It shouldn’t matter, but it did.
“Anything I can help you with.” Lilah asked making her presence known.
Lindsey glanced at his co-worker without response and headed back into his office. He had teams all over the scene trying to piece together what happened.
Then his phone rang, and he picked it up. “Sir we have located the amulet.” A precise voice came over the line, detailing exactly where his artifact had gone. As he hung up the phone it rang again, he let it ring.
Lindsey glanced up as the door to his office opened. His assistant stood there cowering in the doorway. “Sir that was the Senior Partners liason and they want you upstairs.”
Lilah got up from her desk as the door opened and Adrian walked in. Though he mostly dealt with Lindsey she managed to work around her co-worker for this meeting.
“It’s a pleasure to finally meet you.” Lilah smiled holding out her hand.
Adrian reached out taking her hand. Never before had he met a colder woman. It was in there in her eyes.
“Where is Lindsey?” Adrian asked.
“With the Senior Partners,” Lilah smiled walking back to her desk. “You’re agency took out a contract to bring us this item.”
Lindsey held out the likeness of the amulet. “Yes, I recall the contract.” Adrian replied.
“Your go to girl failed, she delivered the Amulet to someone else breaking the agreement between our two firms.” Lilah purred. “The partners want the amulet, and you are going to get it for us. I don’t have to explain what will happen if your break a contract with us.”
Adrian glanced up at the woman. “I can give you the fee back.”
Lilah smiled. “Oh you are going to do just that and still deliver the amulet.”
Adrian glanced up at the woman who thought she was just going to order him about. Adrian raised a brow and pulled out the contract in question and tossed it onto the desk.
“There is no time limit on the contract, and if your firm ever actually read the fine print you would have noticed the clause just at the end. That we can terminate our agreement at anytime, I am terminating our agreement.” Adrian got up heading toward the door.
“It’s not that easy.” Lilah called out after him, the door slamming was the only response. Picking up the phone she dialed without pause. “It’s a go, and I want confirmation when both jobs are done.”
Lilah hung up the phone, and walked to the window. She would take a little flack for what was going to happen, but then in the end it would be worth it. Lindsey’s little star was going to fall and hers would rise.
Wesley was preparing everything for the spell to destroy the amulet. Smashing it had proved impossible and after a little research he found the answer.
A rustling noise caught his attention and he turned toward the door just in time to see something rushing toward his face.
The operative glanced down at the crumpled man and headed towards the altar and picked up the amulet. The contract had called for him to simply get the amulet otherwise he would have finished off the man lying on the ground.
Maria glanced toward the back door, a frown on her face. She wiped her hands and moved toward the window just before she was thrown backwards as the exploded.
“Where is the girl.” Came a soft voice one that wasn’t human she knew from experience.
“I don’t know.” Maria lied, and it knew it a smile touched its lips.
“She isn’t going to tell us a thing.” Rising to its feet it lifted a weapon. “I’ve never killed one of you’re kind it will be interesting to see what it takes.”
Maria closed her eyes her thoughts on Synn, glad the girl had left the city so she wouldn’t be the one to find her. Maria whispered a little prayer to the powers just before the first shot exploded into her chest.
Angel walked upstairs when he smelled blood in the air. Running toward the scent he found Wesley out cold lying on the floor.
“Wesley.” Angel knelt down and the man’s eyes fluttered open.
“The amulet they took it.” He whispered a grimace crossed his lips.
“The girl,” Angel growled thinking Synn had returned. It didn’t make sense she gave the amulet to Wesley.
Wesley shook his head reaching up to touch the area that felt like it was burning, “A man.”
Adrian pulled up to the house and instantly knew something was wrong. He pulled out his weapon as he headed around the back. The back door was hanging off the hinges. Stumbling inside he found what he feared most Maria lying on the floor. Dear god what had they done to her, then he saw her chest rise and he knew they wasn’t alone.
A whisper of a sound caught his attention just before a bullet sunk into shoulder sending the gun he held flying across the floor.
“The big man himself the legend,” An eerily soft voice filled the room. “You may not remember me I wasn’t good enough to join you’re little firm.” The man or thing knelt besides him. “The old girl has put up quite a fight she’s quite hard to kill, you on the other hand.” The thing raised its eye brow. It looked like a man but it wasn’t it was a demon.
“She will hunt you down and kill you.” Adrian whispered as it raised its weapon to his forehead.
“Oh, I am planning on it.” The thing smiled and sent Adrian’s brains splattering through the wall behind him. Turning back toward the bloody mess lying on the floor he stood above her.
“Say your last prayer witch. They say the eyes are the windows to the soul. Unlike you I don’t have one of those, such beautiful windows you have I think I will keep them as a prize.” Maria closed her eyes picturing the joy of her life just before the creature forced her eyes open and she stared at the point of a dagger.
“Wouldn’t want you to miss this,” the creature smiled a beautiful smile as he went to work collecting his prize.
It rose with its prize in hand the woman expired during the extraction. Still they would be an excellent addition to his collection. Pulling out his cell he flipped it open and dialed a number.
“It’s done.” He spoke softly and hung up.
Synn had been heading out of town, when she turned back. All her life she had been leaving the one person she cared about. This time if she was going, Maria was coming with her.
Pulling into the driveway she stopped, Adrian’s car was blocking drive with its door wide open. Reaching under her seat she pulled out her weapon and slid out of the car. Moving to the car she glanced around the drive.
Moving quickly to the backdoor she stopped at the sight before her. Adrian was sprawled against the wall just past the entryway the top of his head missing. Synn moved into the room her heart skipping a beat as she took in the sight and she moved toward the body lying on the floor. It was unidentifiable covered in wounds.
Synn’s gaze flickered over the features for the first time in her life she was sickened as she saw the empty eye sockets. Gone she could have handled Adrian but Maria was another matter. Reaching out she took Maria’s beautiful hand one of the only area’s of her body that was unmarred and simply knelt there holding her hand.
Synn wrapped their bodies in sheets and performed a ritual that Maria’s kind used to pass into the hereafter. After gathering their remains she went to work shutting down all her grief and desire for vengeance. The one who did this would pay but how did you seek out vengeance upon yourself because of her this had happened.
Loading up the store of weapons she held at Adrian’s she gathered Maria’s books and a few keepsakes. After a few minutes on the computer she had the feed from the security tapes burned onto a disk. On her way out she put a code into the pad by the back door and headed toward her car.
Getting into her car she took one last look at the one place she called home, and pulled out of the drive. After a minute the mansion exploded. Glancing in her rearview mirror she watched the smoke rise. Soon the local fire department would be there to contain the fire.
No where, and with no one to run to she found herself pulling up outside the last place she expected.
Lindsey left the top floor he had been reprimanded, in a sense his body was still aching from his punishment. The senior partners still had plans for him, he was allowed this error in one error in judgment. Taking a deep breath he stepped out of the elevator and toward his office.
“No calls.” He growled toward his assistant heading into his office. He had to do some damage control. They wanted the contract with Adrian to continue. They had plans for Synn in the scheme of things she was going to play a major part in the coming war just like Angel. Like Angel they had no idea what part they would play only at the moment she was working for them. They wanted to keep it that way, and tie her more tightly to the firm.
It had been embarrassing to have the replay the moment between them in his office. He knew they monitored him closely he just didn’t know how closely until that moment.
Pouring himself a drink he set the decanter down on his desk.
“I told you no calls.” Lindsey growled as the door to his office opened.
“You’re little assistant said something along those lines, but I don’t care.” Lilah smirked her gaze sliding over him her gaze fading she expected him to look far worse. “I expected worse.”
“So did I,” Lindsey sat down trying to ignore the echoes of pain that racked his body at the moment, a small reminder that this time he had gotten off lightly.
Lilah sat down ignoring the look Lindsey sent her and smiled. “You’ll never guess what I acquired while you were upstairs getting a spanking from the Senior Partners.”
“Don’t care.” Lindsey replied, “I have a lot to get done in the next few hours Lilah I don’t have time for your games.” Lindsey sighed watching as she lifting her hand the amulet dangling from her fingers.
“She gave it to Wesley.” Lilah smiled enjoying the look that crossed Lindsey’s features. “Did you know she is a Slayer?” Lilah asked seeing by his expression that he had. “Well she’s seemed to have found herself a watcher.”
“Good for you I am sure the senior partners will be happy with your work, now if you don’t mind.”
“Adrian came by while you were upstairs.” Lilah replied getting up but not leaving she leaned across his desk.
“The fool thought he could break his contract with us.” Lilah replied an evil smile crossed her lips. “I took care of it.”
Lindsey rose despite the pain shooting up his back. “I hope you convinced him to stay in contract, if not I will call and renegotiate and repair whatever damage you might have done.”
“Oh you won’t be able to call him like I said I took care of it.” Lilah smirked.
“The partners themselves allowed the clause allowing Adrian to cancel the contract because it was the only way to get him to sign it. They have plans for his firm for one person in particular.”
Lilah pushed off the desk her smile fading. “We never allow anyone to break a contract.”
“No we don’t unless we write it into the contract. What have you done.” Lindsey asked softly though he feared he already knew. “You didn’t have her killed did you.”
“Synn, no,” Lilah let slip out before she could stop herself.
The door to his office opened and to men entered. “Miss Morgan please come with us, the partners would like to see you.” The men moved into the room when she didn’t move forward.
“They would like you to come as well.” One of the men turned toward Lindsey. Instantly the pain racking his body disappeared. “The partners would like you to come along as a witness so you can have clear understanding of the damage Miss Morgan has done to their plans.”
“So I can know exactly what mess I am going to have to clean up.” Lindsey replied and the man smiled giving him a slight nod.
“This way, Miss Morgan,” One of the men caught her arm and led the way.
Lindsey followed behind not sure he was happy about going to the top floor twice in one day.
Wesley walked into the office and tossed his keys down on his desk and shrugged out of his jacket it was unusually cold for this time of year.
“They took the amulet.” Came Synn’s voice from the shadow and he whirled around.
“Yes.” Wesley replied as she stepped from the shadows, she looked like a lost little girl.
“Wolfram & Hart,” she asked softly her gaze sliding over his features.
“I assume so but I can’t be sure anyone could have wanted the amulet and tracked it here.” Wesley replied.
“I was leaving town,” Synn replied glancing away from him, and the sight of the bruises on his face. Another of her actions which had hurt another if she hadn’t sent him the Amulet then they wouldn’t have come here after it.
“Why did you come back.” Wesley asked.
“I left someone behind, I went back to get her.” Synn smiled sadly glancing back toward him. “I decided that I had left her behind for the last time. Maria.” Synn almost choked on her name and swallowed her pain and grief. “Is Adrian’s companion, since the moment I arrived in his house she wanted to do nothing but love me. I let her as much as I could.” Synn shrugged her shoulders reaching up she wiped away the tears that she couldn’t stop from falling.
“I was always leaving but I came back not to the house but to her she made it the closest thing to a home that I have ever had. They killed them both.” Synn whispered wiping away the last of her tears.
Wesley moved toward her stopping when she sidestepped and moved out of his reach. The urge to comfort her overrode his common sense.
“Why are you here?” He asked softly.
Wesley pushed away his sympathy and desire to comfort when she didn’t answer. “You live in hotels there are plenty here in town. Better yet you should leave town.” Wesley was surprised how cold his voice sounded.
Synn sighed meeting his gaze. “I have no where else to go.
“She could stay here.” Angel spoke from the darkened hallway. He felt the girl’s arrival when she simply sat down in the office he had left her alone. That she gave Wesley the Amulet was the proof he had been looking for. Wolfram & Hart’s actions had severed her links to the firm for good.
Synn glanced at the vampire she knew he had been there wondered why he hadn’t tried to throw her out.
“I have to watch this, it’s the security feed from the house.” Synn held the disk in her hand meeting the vampires gaze, and he nodded. A sense of relief filled her knowing she wasn’t going to have to watch it alone.
“I have a couch downstairs you can use.” Angel replied not sure if she wanted to stay or simply someone to watch the video with.
“I will get some of my things.” Synn headed out the door. Crossing the street she opened the passenger door grabbing her bag that was always packed and ready to go. Ready to go that had been her life before she was always ready to move on. Sliding her bag over her shoulder she gazed at the building across from her and wondered if she was going to find a place at Angel Investigations.
“Why the change of heart,” Wesley asked after Synn left the room.
“Because like you said she deserves a chance,” Angel replied. Meeting Wesley’s gaze he sighed, “Because you deserve another chance.”
Wesley glanced up as the door opened and she slipped into the office without a sound. Now he was not only going to have to worry about Angel doing that but Synn, as well.
“Lets get you settled, then we can see to other matters.” Angel led the way downstairs.
Lindsey exited the elevators once again that evening this time he headed straight for Lilah’s office. After a quick flip through her files he found what he was looking for. Tucking the address into his pocket he headed toward his office.
Damage control was the first thing he had to do. Word was already out that Wolfram & Hart had broken the contract with Adrian. Adrian wasn’t stupid he made sure others knew about their terms. Several of their best independent contractors were already on the phone. In one stupid move Lilah had swirled up trouble that would take months to smooth over. Several key contracts that were in the works were in jeopardy.
Lindsey not only had to deal with his he had to work at repairing things between Synn and him. Unless he could spin this the right way, then there was no hope in her working for the firm in the future. Lindsey had left as they took Lilah to task for her actions.
Lindsey sat down and went to work. At least he knew she was alive, that was the only reason he hadn’t killed Lilah himself. Even as the thoughts went through his mind he could hardly believe them himself, damn the girl had gotten to him.
