Chapter 8
******
Over the next month, the chosen two got into the routine of being together. Nothing major apocalypse-wise was happening so both of them just did basic patrols every night without too much trouble since the hellmouth wasn’t throwing anything their way. Not that they were complaining about the lack of activity: it meant they got more time together, without the fighting.
Faith had grudgingly started school couple days after Joyce got back from her trip. Giles was right, too: most of the classes the school administration placed her in were more advanced for her age. And, surprisingly to her, after a couple quick catch-up sessions with Willow, she was doing rather well in all of them.
The only thing Buffy laughed at was they had to buy Faith clothes for school. The brunette protested this all the way to the mall, but Joyce explained that even though the school administration was pretty lax on what students could and couldn’t wear, leather pants did not belong at school.
The brunette tried as best she could to stick to herself at school, though. She had absolutely no interest in making friends there, only hanging out with the gang when she could. Having no classes with them, that only meant lunch but she was hampered by the fact she was only a junior and couldn’t leave the campus. The rest of them ate with her half the time, but Buffy stayed with her everyday. Faith was grateful no one questioned why because she didn’t want to know the blonde’s response.
The two girls continued to date, but still only Willow knew about the fact they were together. They also hadn’t had sex since they’re weekend alone together. Joyce was always at the house when they were so they didn’t really have the opportunity to since Faith was pretty certain Buffy would never have sex while her mom was in the house. Instead, they just went out whenever they could and had their hands on each other whenever they were alone.
One thing that changed was both of them found it near impossible to sleep alone. Faith got into the habit of sleeping with Buffy in the blonde’s room after patrol and sneaking back to her room around dawn before her mother got up. The young slayer just felt the need to hold the other girl. It was the only way she was able to sleep comfortably lately. Buffy wasn’t complaining though; she was starting to feel the same way.
Faith woke herself up very early one Saturday so she could get back to her room before Joyce woke up. She got up, kissed the sleeping girl lightly on her forehead and walked out of the room as quietly as she could. Just as she was closing the door, she heard someone clear her throat and knew she was busted.
“Faith,” Joyce quietly said, not wanting to wake Buffy, “lets have a talk downstairs.”
Faith just nodded, suddenly losing her voice, and followed the older woman down the stairs. They walked into the kitchen and Joyce motioned for the brunette to sit, which she did. The mother poured the girl a glass of orange juice and a cup of coffee for herself. She sat across from Faith and looked her in the eye.
“What did I just see?” Joyce asked slowly.
Faith nervously looked at her and tried to guess what was going through her head. Oddly enough, she didn’t see any anger in her eyes, but thought the woman was just hiding it well. “Buffy and I are going out,” she sighed, hanging her head slightly, thinking she knew exactly what would come next. “When do you want me to leave?”
“Faith,” Joyce said, “look at me.” Once the brunette raised her head, she continued. “I don’t want you to move out, I just want to know what’s going on. Now, you two are going out. You mean dating?”
Faith nodded.
“How long?”
“Almost two months,” Faith answered quietly.
“Before you moved in?”
Faith nodded again, but spoke up. “That wasn’t my idea, Mrs. S,” she stated, “I would have been just fine at Giles’ place. And, if you want me to go there, I’ll understand.”
“Stop thinking you’re moving out,” Joyce said, taking a deep breath. She looked as though she was trying to process everything without jumping to any conclusions. “What did I just see?”
Faith looked at her then her eyes went wide, knowing exactly what Joyce meant. “It’s not what you think, Mrs. S,” she almost pleaded. “We were just sleeping, nothing else. I just wanted to be close to her.”
Joyce nodded, looking thoughtful. “I know I’m going to regret asking this, but have the two of you had sex?”
Faith hung her head again and slowly nodded.
“Okay,” the older woman breathed out, taking that calming breath she hoped would work in this situation. “Faith, look at me, please.” The brunette looked up as she was told and Joyce continued. “This is serious, you know that, right? The two of you are so young. This is a big issue.”
“I know,” Faith sighed. “It’s a big deal to me. I really like your daughter, Mrs. S. In fact, I haven’t told her this because I don’t know how she will react, but I love her. I really love her.”
“Are you sure, Faith?” Joyce asked almost skeptically, leaning in toward the teenager. “I know everything seems like a big deal when you’re young, but one day you could wake up and everything could change. You or Buffy could find someone else.”
“I’ve never felt this before, not about anyone,” Faith said, knowing to keep calm and not get defensive. She was strictly at the older woman’s mercy. “I’ve never cared about someone like this.”
“Okay,” the older woman relented, “I can’t say I’m all that comfortable with this right now. I never expected Buffy to be involved with another girl, much less someone who’s living with us. There will be rules.”
Faith nodded, hoping she and Buffy were in the clear. “Whatever you want, but you should just look on the upside. Neither one of us can get the other pregnant.” She smirked.
Joyce laughed, but quickly stopped. “That’s not funny, Faith.” She tried to look as serious as possible, but it really wasn’t working. She always liked the brunette’s sense of humor. “I want the two of you to be on your best behavior. Do not do anything I would disapprove of.”
“Understood,” Faith said. “Is kissing okay?”
“Let me get used to this situation first,” Joyce stated. “I don’t really like seeing Buffy kissing anybody.”
“I guess,” Faith nodded, “her last boyfriend was a vampire.” She stopped suddenly and her eyes went wide. “You knew that, right?”
“Yes, don’t worry,” Joyce smiled, “and I’m taking this a lot better than that.”
Faith chuckled quietly. “So we’re okay?”
Joyce nodded. “For now. Don’t worry too much about me, honey. You’re already like a daughter to me.”
“Cool,” Faith grinned and took a drink of the juice in front of her. She was about to say something when she heard Buffy come down the stairs and into the kitchen.
“Morning,” she mumbled then took in what she was seeing, looking from her mom to Faith and back again. “Should I be worried?”
Faith reached over and took Buffy’s hand. “She knows, B.”
The blonde’s eyes wide and almost took a step away, but Faith kept hold of her hand. “Mom, I can explain.”
“It’s okay, honey,” Joyce said and gestured for her daughter to take a seat. Once Buffy did, she continued. “I actually knew before today, but when I got up this morning and saw Faith’s bed empty, everything clicked.”
Faith looked at her with an arched eyebrow. “How did you know?”
“Anyone with eyes should know by the way you act around each other,” she smiled. “But, Buffy, as I was telling Faith, I expect the two of you to be on your best behavior from now on.”
“What do you mean, Mom?” Buffy asked.
“I’ll fill you in, B,” Faith smiled at her. She got up and pulled Buffy with her. “We’ll be upstairs.”
Before Joyce could say anything further, Faith was leaping up the stairs and to her room, taking Buffy with her. She pulled Buffy into the room, but didn’t close the door behind her. She instantly wrapped her arms around the blonde and gave her a light kiss, laughing quietly.
“What’s so funny?” Buffy asked, smiling.
“This, B,” the brunette responded, kissing her again. “Your mom knows, she hasn’t thrown me out and she’s even okay with it.”
“I don’t know if ‘okay’ is the word I’d use,” Buffy said, moving out of Faith’s arms and sitting on the bed. She was still getting over the shock of having her mom find out she was dating another girl.
Faith sat down next to her. “She is, B,” she grinned. “You don’t give your mom enough credit. She really is cool. I just don’t think she’s cool with us sleeping in the same bed, though.”
“Yeah,” Buffy agreed, looking thoughtful. “I’ll miss having you there.”
“We can figure something out,” Faith said. “I bet if she knows we’re not getting all hot and sweaty together, she’ll be okay.”
It took Buffy a moment before she hit a realization and looked at the young girl in horror. “You had a sex talk with my mother?!”

“Your mom knows?” Willow looked at her friend in shock when they met in the school halls Monday morning.
Buffy nodded. “She caught Faith sneaking out of my room Saturday morning.”
“And she didn’t freak?”
“No, she didn’t,” Buffy grinned. “I don’t know what Faith and her talked about, but she’s okay with us dating and her staying at the house.”
“She’s okay with it?” the redhead asked skeptically.
“Maybe okay is the wrong word,” Buffy shrugged as they walked to class, “but Faith said she just needed to get used to the idea.”
“Wow,” Willow commented, shaking her head, “I don’t think my mom would be acting the same way if she caught Oz in my room.”
“I don’t think my mom would either,” she grinned and Willow hit her shoulder. “Just kidding. It might be because Mom really likes Faith.”
“They do seem to get along pretty well,” the redhead remarked, stopping as they reached the classroom. “So much for Faith being a bad-ass.”
“Just don’t let her hear you say that,” Buffy laughed as they walked into class.

Later in the week, Faith was busy studying in the library, or more specifically, Giles’ office. He had been letting her use it if he was out so she could study and not have to deal with other people who might come in. He knew the brunette slayer didn’t have a very high tolerance for many of the other high schoolers. The last he wanted was his books being wrecked due to Faith tossing someone into a bookshelf.
Faith heard the doors swing open and close and groaned. Part of the deal she made with the watcher was that she had to help anyone who rang the bell when he was gone and the older man was currently in a staff meeting. She looked back down at she book and hoped whoever was in the library didn’t need her help.
“What do I have to do to get some service out here?”
Faith looked up at the blonde and arched an eyebrow with a smirk. “What will you do?”
“Oh, I think you know,” Buffy grinned, plopping in a chair on the other side of the desk. “Does Giles know you’re sitting in his chair?”
“Yeah,” Faith grinned, “he said I could use his office to study.”
“And where is he?”
“Staff meeting or something,” Faith explained before looking down at her book again.
“What are you working on anyway?” Buffy asked, leaning forward to look at what Faith was doing.
“Trig,” Faith answered, writing some notes down. She felt Buffy walk behind her and put her hands on her shoulders. “You’re being very distracting, B, not very helpful.”
“Maybe that’s the point,” Buffy said, leaning down to kiss the top of Faith’s head lightly. “I can’t believe you’re doing well in that class. I hated it.”
“It’s not that hard once you get the hang of it,” the brunette said, smiling as Buffy rested her head on her shoulder. She remembered something after a second and turned her head. “Aren’t you supposed to be in class?”
“We have a sub so it’s a study hall,” she said, “and I know it’s your free period. I figured this is where you’d be. I just thought you’d be playing with weapons or something. I mean, that’s what I do.”
Faith quickly kissed her cheek before pulling away. She realized how odd it looked to see her being so studious, but she didn’t care. She secretly liked that people were starting to consider her smart. “I have to get this finished.”
Buffy sighed and pulled away, sitting back down across from her. “This is not what I had expected when I came in here.”
“Well,” Faith looked up and half-smiled, “we could start telling people about us, B. Then we could be more open. I’m getting sick of thinking about what other people will think or say every time I want to touch you.”
“I know,” Buffy sighed, “just give it a little more time, okay?”
“I’m okay with giving it some time,” the young teen responded, “but I don’t want to have to save up all my urges for you for when we’re completely alone. It drives me a little nuts.”
“Urges?” Buffy smirked.
“You know what I mean, B,” Faith stated, narrowing her eyes. “We haven’t even had sex since that one weekend and I’m okay with that, but I’d at least like people to know we’re dating.”
“It’ll happen,” Buffy smiled sweetly at the brunette, “you’ll see.”
Faith just looked at her before grunting quietly and looking back down at her book. She tried her best to ignore the blonde sitting across from her, hoping her point was being made in her silence. She didn’t like the hiding. It made her think that maybe the older girl was ashamed of being with her.
Buffy sat there looking at her for a couple minutes before getting up from the chair and going back over to Faith. She pulled her chair away from her desk and sat on Faith’s lap before the other girl could say anything.
“Is this what I have to do to get your attention away from that book?” she asked coyly, putting her arms around her neck.
“You know that’s not true,” Faith answered, tossing her pencil back on the desk. She wrapped her arms around the blonde, pulling her closer. “You always have my attention.”
Their lips instantly met, crashing together as Faith’s hands went into Buffy’s hair. The blonde cupped her face as she slid her tongue in between the younger girl’s parted lips and massaged her tongue with her own. Faith groaned into Buffy’s mouth as a response and held her tighter as they continued to make out. They kept going for a few minutes, barely even breaking for air, when they were interrupted.
“Well, Faith, I see the library isn’t,” Giles stopped suddenly when he entered his office. He managed not to drop the cup of coffee in his hand, but not by much.
The two slayers broke apart with a quiet smack. Buffy jumped up so fast the chair toppled over with Faith still sitting in it. The brunette teen yelped as she fell to the floor, her head barely missing the cabinet behind her.
“Hi, Giles,” Buffy said nervously, failing to fight back her blush, “what are you doing here?”
“Meeting ran short,” Giles managed to answer, his eyes wide, “and it’s my office. I could ask you the same thing.”
“Ugh,” Faith groaned, getting off the floor and bringing the chair with her, “you should really knock before you enter, G-man. I was in the middle something here.” She knew that probably wasn’t the right thing to say, but it was all she could think of.
“I sadly saw that,” Giles said, putting his cup of coffee on his desk. “Faith, when I let you use my office to study, I actually meant study. I didn’t give the go-ahead for you to use it as a... make out room. Which, leads me to this.” He gestured to the two of them and his chair.
“Yeah, that,” Faith said and looked over at Buffy. The blonde was still blushing profusely and Faith decided she should take charge of this conversation. She was getting tired of having Buffy lead who they told and when. “B and I have been dating.”
Giles looked from one to the other and sat in the chair on the other side of his desk, rubbing the side of his face. He was silent for a minute, thinking, before looking at the two standing slayers again. “Does your mother know?”
“Yes,” Buffy answered simply.
The watcher looked at the two of them in disbelief, wondering why Buffy’s mother hadn’t told him. “How did she react?”
“I really don’t know,” Buffy stated and sat down in Giles’ chair while Faith leaned against the wall. “Mom talked about everything with Faith before I even knew.”
The watcher nodded and all three were silent for a couple minutes. Finally, Faith got sick of no one saying anything and spoke. “Listen, do you have a problem with this, Giles? Personally, I don’t care all that much either way, but I know B will and that effects me. So, what will it be?”
Giles sighed. “If Joyce doesn’t have an issue, I don’t have any reason to.” He stopped as Buffy got up and hugged him. “However, I don’t want this to effect your slaying. You must not be a distraction for one another.”
“Understood,” Buffy nodded, looking over at Faith to smile at her.
Faith stopped leaning against the wall and walked over to the other two. “Giles, I can honestly say I’ll never let anything hurt B and she’ll do the same for me.” Buffy nodded in agreement as the bell rang.
“All right,” Giles got up from the chair, “the two of you should get to class. Come back at the end of the day so we can go over your patrol for the night.”
The chosen two nodded before heading off to class.
