The 'trick' to it

Sorry this is late guys but I had some 24hr bug (more like 30hrs!) and couldn't get out of bed so this ended up being a bit late getting posted. Hope it's worth the wait!

Thanks to Jiall, Tesgura, Anon, Daeomae and Reese for the reviews. Such high praise ^_^ I'm so glad you guys are enjoying this.

I'm happy to hear that you think I'm getting the characters Reese this is actually my first Buffy fic so I was worried they were a bit off!

“He tracked me down on the hunt last night, since you missed your appointment. Made me pay in advance, you owe me for that by the way.”
Spike looked up and nodded. “Well, what did the smarmy git have to say for himself?” Cruz dropped his coat over the arm of the chair and got straight to the point. “He said the mayor has plans of accession”
Spike sat up straighter and shook his head “Well shit”

He had been waiting for them to say something all day. It was killing him waiting for them to make the first move. But all through the day he’d held back. Wanting to think they were alright with the latest development. But now that the final bell had gone he had to know.
“You’re not freaked?” Xander looked up through his eyelashes at his girls. He would be freaked, is freaked, so why aren’t they?!
“Xan its ok! It’s something new about you but it doesn’t change the fact that we love you!” Willow grabbed his hand and squeezed.
“Yep you are still our Xander shaped friend. Just now, you’re well…. You’re dressing like Angel!” And that was it the two girls burst into laughter as Xander straightened the clothes Spike had insisted he wear and turned away dragging his feet all the way to the library with the girls laughing along behind. Wondering if; since this school was built on the hellmouth, there was any chance at all of the ground opening up and swallowing him.

“He’s begun the process?”
”Yes. Trick says that he’s invulnerable until after the ceremony begins”
Spike snarled “This could take out the whole town”
“I think that is the whole idea of the town. Trick thinks that’s why the mayor settled here, collecting people and demons to act as sacrifice, first meal if you will”
“Well he’s bloody not going to snack down here! It’s my town now.”
“There’s something else” Cruz was snarling under his breath. He really didn’t want to be the one to tell Spike this “Trick says the date is set, he plans to hijack the ceremony”
Spike looked at Cruz expectantly and he took a deep unneeded breath and continued.
“His graduation” there was no doubt about who ‘he’ was.
Spike stiffened “Fecking hell he is! Well it’s not going to happen! Lets see what you can come up with, we’ll try anything”

Giles had the library table covered in books on vampire lore.
Buffy looked at the others “Yay! Research party” It’s been so long, I’d almost forgotten how not fun they were”
Giles sighed “Buffy please this is very important.”
“Vampire lore? Giles what are we trying to find?” Willow looked up confused.
“Let’s just focus on vampires’ courtship practices. I’m fairly sure they are going to be unpleasant but let’s make sure that they aren’t unpleasant ‘surprises’.”

“No. No. NO! We do not want to work with the slayer.” Spike sprung out of the chair sending it flying backwards.
“It makes sound strategically sense” Cruz shrugged apologetically.
“Sense? To Dru maybe. Stars aren’t talking to you are they mate?” Spike sighed in the face of Cruz’s resolve. “I really don’t want to work with her”
Cruz sighed. “We might have to. We will need the watchers expertise and the slayers strength.”
Spike righted his chair and dropped back into it. “But she smells”

“This ones useless” Buffy reached across Willow to grab another book “Wils.”
“Hmm?” Willow didn’t even look up; she was too engrossed in the life and times of the Chinese vampire sects.
“Why aren’t I having a wiggins?” Buffy looked at the books, most of them contained a series of horrific encounters with vampires that made her sick to her stomach. The worst one, full of the Aurelius clan history and Angelus’ handy work Xander was fast asleep upon. She caught Giles eye and he laughed softly feeling the same himself.
“I really don’t know Buff” Willow sighed. Looking fondly over at Xander’s sleeping form. “Maybe because if he sees how wonderful our Xander is he can’t be all bad”

“Fine you wanker. The Slayer can work for me on this one!” Spike gestured to the two minions waiting by the door “Grab these”

“Xan?” cool fingers brushed the hair back from his face.
“Mmm?” He wasn’t ready to wake, even though he had slept so much in the past few days he felt like he could sleep for days more.
“Have to get you on ta vampire hours pet. Sun went down hours ago” Spike sounded amused and he struggled to wake enough to find out what was so funny.
“He needs to keep human hours thank you very much. He has school”
“I can teach him everything he needs to know.” Spike was openly leering now.
“TMI” Buffy shuddered.
“I dunno I could stand to hear a little more” Willow giggled.
Buffy spluttered and Giles sighed deeply.
“Is that why you are here? To corrupt my charges?” The glasses came of automatically and the polishing began in earnest.
“Nope” Spike plunked himself onto the table and looked down into sleepy chocolate eyes. “That’s a bonus”

“Then to what do we owe this pleasure?” Giles began to gather the more fragile books away from Spike just to be safe walking over to place them on the counter.
“Oh, sarcasm” Spike smiled showing fang “Not a social call I’m afraid.” He nodded briskly to Cruz and he stepped forward carrying a pile of ancient texts.
“We have reason to believe that the mayor plans to ascend” Giles missed the counter and the books fell to the floor.
“Oh dear”

Xander realized that the situation was serious but couldn’t rouse himself enough to participate in discussions. A certain part of his anatomy however was unfortunately wide awake. Spike’s fingers had been trailing his thigh for the last few minutes drawing patterns and curling higher and higher. Xander wiggled trying to get comfortable without tipping off the others; not ready to face to giggling girls and that particular sad frown that Giles seemed to have when he looked at him these days. He risked a look at Giles but he was totally absorbed in the phone conversation he was having. He had said something about ringing a church and had disappeared into his office. Idly he wondered if Giles would ever look at him like he did Willow and Buffy or if his ‘whatever he was having’ with Spike had ruined any chance of that. Looking up at Spike he felt like telling Spike to make it up to him and felt the beginnings of a smirk as he considered the possibilities.

Spike had followed the line of Xander’s gaze when he felt him tense and begin to smell distressed. It wasn’t hard to think of why the boy was upset, the watcher had been casting sorrowful eyes at him all night. Spike wasn’t an idiot. He’d seen the books they were reading before he arrived. If they even considered trying to separate him from the boy he’s have to separate them from an arm or a leg. Xander would never forgive him if he killed them, but he had a few tricks that could possibly redeem him for a missing limb or two. Spike was torn from his plotting when he smelt arousal from his boy. Spike’s eyes snapped to his face searching for the object of his consideration and was pleased to see the whelp gazing up at him. Noticing the smirk on the boys face his answered with one of his own and then had to laugh. The glass had cut a small scar almost identical to his own battle scar, into the boy’s dark brown eyebrow and with the smirk in place it was like looking into a mirror for the first time since his turning. The boys expression turned curious and full lips formed into a pout that just had to be kissed. With the chuckle still on his lips he bent down and claimed Xander’s mouth banishing all thoughts and worries from the human within moments. Drawing away Spike rested his forehead against a dazed and panting Xander then gifted him with a rare smile. A smile that was shyly mirrored by the brown eyed teen before they hit the books again. Working through exhaustion long into the night the group gained plenty of knowledge but found no answers.

Morning found three teens and one watcher fast asleep in the chairs of the library. The girls close together for warmth and Xander sleeping peacefully under black leather smelling of whiskey and cigarettes, smells that flavoured his dreams.

Hope you enjoyed it! I'm wondering if you guys think it is better in one persons point of view (i.e Spike, Xander etc) or like this and kind of everywhere at once? Let me know what you think.
