Chapter 6
Chapter 6
An escalated bickering contest was not the best way to wake up a sleeping vampire. Especially one who was feeling particularly vulnerable at the moment. With a swear and a soft snarl Spike snatched up his coat and shoes, glided soundlessly down the hallway, kneeling down at the landing so he could listen without being seen. Actually, he could have done so from Buffy’s room, the whelp was certainly loud enough.
“...what is going through your head, Buff. Deadboy jr.’s not some pet you just take home and keep!”
Willow stayed curled up on the sofa next to Anya, pulling idly at a lock of red hair, “I don’t know, Xand. With the whole chip thing he’s kinda harmless...like a puppy...and with the blue eyes he’s...sorry...” Spike smirked a bit at that even if he did feel more than slightly offended. The witch thought he was a puppy?
Xander waved his arms around, “The point, thanks so much Wills, is that he’s an evil soulless demon. You should be staking him, not housing him.”
Giles sat quietly in the recliner, cleaning his glasses and sighing to himself before replacing them. He opened his mouth to speak and froze when he spied Spike sitting out of the way and just listening. The vampire had his arms wrapped around his legs, brow furrowed in concentration and biting on his lower lip in worry. The watcher tilted his head just a little, watching the vampire to realize he’d never just observed the master. It was quite fascinating to realize he had similar mannerisms to any human.
Buffy had her arms crossed in classic stubborn slayer mode, “This is so not up for discussion. Look Xander, I get that you don’t like it and you don’t like him. Fine. But this is my mom’s house and she wants him here. Besides, he’s not in your basement anymore so don’t worry about it.”
Pointing a finger, “What about Riley?”
Shooting him a hurt look, “Low blow, Harris.”
Xander backed up a step and ran a hand through his hair,” I’m sor-...”
Not finished, “For your info Riley’s no longer in the picture. He’s decided he’s not coming back so he dumped me over the phone. Cool with you?” Spike perked up considerably upon hearing this, restraining himself from pumping his fist back in victory. He’d save that for later.
Closing his eyes, “I’m sorry, Buff.”
Swiping at a stray tear, “Doesn’t matter. It doesn’t have anything to do with Spike. Look, a bunch of vamps attacked him and right now he needs someone to have his back. I’ve got it. When I’ve pulverized them to dust maybe he’ll have my back during patrols now back off, Xander.”
Reaching for her arm, “I just don’t want him hurting you, Buffy.”
Shaking him off with a snort, “Please, Spike can’t hurt me. And he certainly won’t hurt my mom. Just don’t worry about me on this, okay? I’m a big girl. I can take care of myself.”
Xander scuffed his shoes on the carpet, holding up a fist, “I know. Full on girl power.”
Smirking, “You know it. Now you’re going to be nice, right?”
Scowling, “I won’t stake him, how’s that?”
Sighing, “Keep your comments to yourself and it’ll do. Spike? Are you joining us or what?”
With the exception of Giles everyone jumped in surprise as Spike moved fluidly to his feet and leaned against the railing, thrusting his tough guy act forward, “You ruined my entrance, Slayer. Besides, sounds like you’ve got everything taken care of down there.”
Shrugging innocently, “Well, if you don’t want spicy buffalo wings while we watch a mov-...”
Spike was in front of her before she could even finish, an excited look on his face. He was never one to pass up chicken wings with mountains of sauce and they all knew it. Sure, vampires don’t need to eat but he was a little quirky like that.

Smiling softly as she played with her food, she let her claws rake down his chest, enjoying his howls of pain. She had a sadistic side to her personality that demanded an enjoyment in the pain of others. It was also fortunate for humanity that it seemed to extend just to the demon populace. She slapped his face lightly as his eyes dulled, “Now, now, little vampire...I can’t have you going to sleep just yet. Am I boring you? I certainly hope not, or I’ll be most disappointed.”
The fledge hissed at her in fear, “What do you want?!”
The demoness smirked, “Pain. Blood. Death...but first, an answer. Are you familiar with a vampire known as William?”
The vampire lowered his head with a groan. He’d been warned to stay clear of this sadistic demoness. But he hadn’t listened, thinking he could take care of himself, “Yes.”
Smirking, “Good...that’s a good answer. But I’m afraid I require more. Perhaps his whereabouts...”
She let her voice trail off, leaving him room to bare his soul...so to speak, “The Slayer...”
Quirking an eyebrow, “The vampire slayer?”
Nodding, “Yes. She has him. He...they work together...”
Stroking his cheek gently, “Do they, now? Why do I find that hard to believe?”
She carefully raked her claws over him and he hissed, “It’s true! I’ve seen them. Talking. Killing vampires together! They went after that mechanical horror Adam and killed him.”
She pursed her lips a little and stepped back, “And where would I find this slayer?”
He gave her a shocked look, “No one knows that! Don’t you think we would have killed her by now if we did?”
Smirking, “I’m fairly confident you wouldn’t.” He slumped with a groan. She did believe him and after a moment nodded to herself and quickly finished him off. As his dust settled to the sewer floor her mind swept over in turmoil. So, her beloved grandchild had become warrior for the light side. Interesting.

Anya shook her head, tilting it to look at her boyfriend. He was sitting on top of his dad’s beat up truck and finishing off the rest of a pizza. Thinking and eating seemed to go hand in hand for the former Zeppo and he’d been ‘thinking’ for two hours now. His initial peace with Buffy had slowly mutated to hurt and jealousy the more he thought about that bleached idiot in the same house with his Buffy, “I...I can’t believe she’d choose that peroxide freak over her friends.”
Rolling her eyes and walking over, sitting on the bumper, “You’re the one making her choose. She doesn’t want to. She wants his orgasms and your friendship.”
Flinching and standing up, fists clenching, “Don’t even hint to something like that, Ann. He’s a lowlife vampire and she’s-...”
Shrugging, “And she loves him.”
Barking out a laugh that was too much of a snarl to be ignored, “No! She can’t.”
Hands on her hips, “And why not?”
Not able to quite suppress his growl, “She’s the slayer. It’s her duty to slay demons and vampires and all the evil stuff. He’s a stupid demon with no soul. A killer. Killers should be killed...” Looking out into the night with distant eyes, “...they don’t get the girl.” Shaking his head and nearly whispering, “The guy she can always count on should get her...”
Anya’s fist clenched against her side as she slowly lowered her arms, her eyes flashing in anger. A thousand years as a vengeance demon and she knew jealousy when she saw it. Even as naive as she was in human relationships and emotions, she knew what it took to drive couples apart. Jealousy, envy, and lust. The three worst of human emotions and she was starting to see that her boyfriend held all three against any man that went after Buffy Summers.
But it was more than that. She and Spike were very similar. Both loved humans who either couldn’t or wouldn’t see it. And both of them were soulless killers, “That’s all that I am Xander, just in a human shell.” And without another word she stomped off, leaving her stunned boyfriend to scramble to his feet and hurry after her.
