Left in the Dark
Left in the Dark
Angel sighed in relief as Doyle left the office, the darkness closing around him. He liked Doyle, really, but the other man just didn’t get him. Cordy, if she had stayed around, might have but she’d actually got a part in a second rate B movie and had gone to Vancouver to film. He found himself really missing her, even though she’d just been in the office a week or so. Doyle was convinced he'd missed a chance at the love of his life.
Angel tried to tell himself that it wasn’t because she was a connection to Sunnydale, and to Xander. It didn’t work.
The office was quiet as he sat behind his desk. He could hear the sounds from the street and water dripping from a pipe somewhere. The room was pitch black with the exception of the streetlights and the occasional car that drove by. This was where he’d wanted to be ever since Doyle had started his campaign to go out drinking to forget the girl who’d gotten away.
He hated ever minute of it.
He was about to go downstairs to his apartment to find something to read when he heard someone approaching the door. He remembered Cordelia’s parting instructions on how to deal with clients, and turned on one of the lights before going to the door. He knew he had a fake smile on his face but it soon became real as the scent of the person on the other side of the door became evident.
“Xander!”
The teen grinned at him, longish hair falling in his face. He looked…well, Xander looked tired and a bit thin. There were shadows under his eyes that Angel didn’t like to see because it meant that he’d been having nightmares again. He was wearing an old pair of jeans and his sneakers were worn. A large duffle bag was slung over his shoulder.
Angel had never been happier to see someone in all his life.
“Hey, Deadboy! Miss me?”
