THREE SHEETS TO THE WIND

CHAPTER SEVEN: MOMENTS IN TIME

Oz woke up to find that Xander was no longer lying beside him. He wasn’t surprised by this, that Xander had gone off to try and find some comfort with his other lover. This moment in time gave him the opportunity to slip out unnoticed while every one else was relaxing for the day. Everybody was tired so Giles and Buffy had thought it would be a good idea to just rest for the day with no travelling, just to let everyone relax.

As Oz walked out of his room he saw a few of the mini slayers wandering about, but none of them paid him any attention. Giles was there though, keeping an eye on them all. Oz groaned inwardly, he knew he’d need a good excuse to get past Giles and out into the wilderness surrounding the motel they had decided to inhabit.

Giles spotted Oz and walked over to him, “Hello Oz. You seem to have been spending a lot of time with Xander and I was wondering how he’s holding up? It can’t have been easy for him with his injury and then uhh, Anya not, umm, being here.”

Oz looked back at Giles, he wasn’t surprised that the older man was concerned. Giles had always been the unofficial father figure of the scoobies, a role he’d always taken upon himself willingly.

“He seems to be okay.” Oz replied. “I think he still hurts, and is maybe a bit confused about what he feels. All in all though, I think he’s gonna come through it okay. You shouldn’t worry so much, Xander’s tougher than people give him credit for.”

“So how have you been?” Giles asked in return, his concern for Xander abated for the moment. “It can’t have been easy for you coming back just to see Sunnydale destroyed?”

Oz smiled. “Sunnydale wasn’t home anymore Giles, it was the people I came back for.”

Giles took his glasses off and started cleaning them distractedly. “But with your, uhhh, condition? The bus can be awfully claustrophobic for us humans. For someone with a wolf side to them, I can’t imagine.”

“Well, I was just headed out, need to stretch my legs.” Oz answered, hoping that Giles wouldn’t see that there was anymore to it than that. He needed everybody to trust him or else everything he’d done, and was planning to do, would be for nothing.

“Don’t stray too far then. Although we defeated The First there are still things we need to be wary of and I’d prefer it if I knew where everyone is.” Giles told him as Oz made his way out of the courtyard of the motel.

Oz made his way into the wilderness with a sense of purpose, knowing exactly where he was going even though he’d never been there before. Instinctively he put his hand into his pocket and felt the jewel in the amulet. He smiled as he remembered taking it from the ground where the pile of dust that was once Angel lay. It had been all too easy to stay down wind of Angel that night in Sunnydale, to stalk and then attack him. For all his fighting ability Angel didn’t stand a chance as soon as Oz in his wolf form had got a good grip on Angel’s head and was able to tear it away from his body.

Oz didn’t know what powers the amulet had, but he knew that it connected him to her, his new obsession, the one that now occupied his every waking thought and who motivated everything he did.

Finally he reached his destination and readied himself in a position of supplication and was soon rewarded by her presence. The First made her way towards Oz, using the form of Tara as this always seemed to please her newest minion.

As she reached Oz, Tara looked at him pleased at the excitement she could feel radiating from him. “You know there’s no need to kneel before me Oz. You are my sight and my touch in the places that I cannot be.” As Oz stood up she leaned in and kissed him.

Oz pulled back in shock to stare at the figure in front of him to see her smiling. “My poor boy, do you still not understand? The collapse of Sunnydale into a hole in the ground was all part of the plan. Those stupid children thinking the tremors were an after effect of the spell your witch cast was an added bonus.” Oz just stood there, still dumbfounded. “The fall of Sunnydale enabled my true release into this world, it made me whole, corporeal.” The First explained as a smile came back across Oz’s face.

“But we must make plans. Have you been able to separate him from the rest?” Tara asked.

“All apart from one, Spike, but the others trust me with him. They don’t suspect anything.” Oz answered.

“They are more blind than he. And surely I’m not the only one with surprises under my belt, so to speak. You kept quiet about your sexual preferences.” The First purred, almost teasingly.

“There’s a first time for everything.” Oz answered, almost too quietly for The First to hear. “I didn’t think he’d go for it, but it seems Xander is in a more troubled place than we originally thought. It’s made his isolation from the rest of the group easier.”

“Apart from Spike.” Tara retorted. “Something must be done about him. Don’t kill him, that would be too suspicious. Plus the others would want to know what happened and we run the risk of being discovered.”

Oz pondered for a while, shifting his weight from foot to foot, before answering. “Xander has always let the others know how much he hates Vampires, so if they caught him in a not so fully clothed situation with a male vampire, that might force a situation that we could turn to our advantage.”

“That would be satisfactory.” Tara agreed as she drew closer to Oz. “But now, you need to draw power from me, you are weak.”

“But how?” Oz asked. “You’re corporeal now.”

“How do you think?” The First asked as she kissed Oz and drew him closer to Tara’s body.
