Chapter 7
I was disappointed that I couldn’t get the Slayer separated from her friends as easily as I had hoped; instead here I was walking through the darkened cemeteries of town with a demon, a vampire no less, the very same one who had landed a blow on me and given me an actual fight. Glancing at him occasionally from the corner of my eyes I grudgingly admitted to myself that he was a bit good-looking, and it didn’t hurt that I respected him as a warrior either. I was shaken out of my thoughts when I realized he was talking to me.
“What was that?” I asked.
“I was just wondering how long you have been battling demons and such?”
“Oh, many years now, seems like just this side of forever.” I answered with a slight smirk. “And you, why would a vampire help the vampire Slayer? Seems a bit odd.”
“Yeah well, when the government experiments on your brain and you can no longer do what it is that vampires do and then you go and nick yourself a soul, well the only way you can get your kicks anymore is by killing demons. I used to have a thing for her as well, but that was a few Apocalypses and deaths back.”
“That is terrible! Humans doing such things.” I said angrily, but quickly changed tactics as he looked oddly at me. “What did you mean by ‘a thing’ for the Slayer?”
“Well, you know, like a crush,” he said, and then under his breath, “or obsession…” he appeared embarrassed.
“Oh, you find her attractive.” I said thinking about the small mortal girl, a bit more jealously than I liked.
“Used to worship the bloody ground she walked upon, but now we have a mutual respect and admiration for one another as fighters and friends.”
“Oh, so you would not take her as a mate then?”
“Mate? Like… what do you mean?”
“You know, the one person you claim as your own and couple with; a mate.” I said. He scoffed.
“No, no. I’d never turn Buffy into a vampire.” He paused and then added; “Don’t think I could stand her for an eternity.” And he laughed. “So yeah, no mating with Buffy.” His response brought a feeling of relief that I didn’t like. And why do I keep glancing at him?
“Do you already possess a mate then?” I asked.
“What’s with the Inquisition pet?”
“Curious about the relationship aspect of the vampire life and persona.”
“Oh.” He stated, contemplating my response. “Well, no I don’t have a mate, did once kinda, but didn’t work out with us. And most vampires don’t mate really, they chose someone that they can tolerate and find attractive, and then they hunt and shag together for a while, but vampires are lone creatures by nature, so covens and couples usually don’t last long love.”
“Curious.”
“And you love? Any blokes in your life?”
“No, I have no mate as of yet, I have not found one who holds my interest and whom I can tolerate for long periods of time; when I chose a mate I must be absolutely sure that he is the one I want with me forever.”
“Well, ya know pet, it doesn’t need to be ‘forever’, most couples don’t take that whole ‘til death do us part’ line very seriously anymore.”
“No, among my people, when we mate it is for life. Unless one dies, then the remaining partner may choose a new mate if they desire to and then that is for life as well.” I clarified.
“Blimey. Well, I don’t see why no guys are lining up to court you, to be stuck with you forever seems like a hell of a good deal to me.” He said, and then realizing it, he cleared his throat. “I mean, well, mortal guys are all about looks and such.”
I laughed. “And you mean to tell me that male vampires are not the same way?”
“Course not! Well, I personally like a gal that’s not just pretty but also can keep up with me in other aspects of my un-life. Conversation and tolerance are high on my list too pet.” I smiled. The two of us continued our patrol, dispatched a few vampires here and there and continued our conversation as well. We stopped in front of a crypt and I looked around.
“What is this place?”
“Home sweet home love.” He responded as he opened the door and walked inside. I stood outside watching him, not wishing for our talk to end just yet. He was the first person or demon that I had held a long tête-à-tête with that I enjoyed. I cleared my throat.
“May I come in?” I asked. Spike turned around and looked at me oddly.
“Yeah pet, sure. Come on in. It ain’t much, but it’s better than nothing.” I smiled to myself as I brushed past him; I had every intention of pummeling him for any and all information on the Slayer and her agenda to have me destroyed. I turned around to face him, and to both of our surprise he was right behind me and we ended up nose to nose, my skin began to tingle and I felt odd so I backed up a step. “Sorry.” He mumbled, as he looked me up and down, I felt the need to blush, but fought it.
We actually began talking and I decided to try and get information out of him this way, the fewer corpses right off the bat in her close-knit circle the better. We were a few hours into our talk and it was close to sunrise when his door was flung open and the Slayer was there.
“Have you never heard of requesting permission to enter?”
“Haven’t you ever heard of knocking Slayer?” we both asked simultaneously, and then looked at one another with smiles.
“Sorry I didn’t know you had company.” She looked at me with disdain as I looked at her with loathing hidden by indifference. “How’d she do?”
“Ana did spectacular in battle actually, you might even learn a thing or two from her Summers.” He stated as he placed an arm around my bare shoulders, a wave of heat passed through my body. The two continued their banter and bickering while my mind was elsewhere.
Why does this male have such an affect upon me? I have never had such... wanton thoughts or feelings course through my being before, why now? It is almost as if… and then it hit me: I am in heat! “Of course!” I said aloud, disrupting the argument between the two blondes, as it was getting more and more heated.
She glared at me. “What?”
“Nothing.” I said quickly, then with an icy tone and look to match, “Do you not have a place of your own with people who actually wish to converse with you?” Spike chortled at my remark.
“You know? You’re right, I shouldn’t be wasting time here with you two. If you wanna help little Miss Thang? Then stay out of my way unless asked to otherwise do so.” She said as she retreated and slammed the door behind her.
“Bravo Ana, put the bint in her place.” His arm was still around my shoulders and he gave me a squeeze. I smiled at him. “So, what were we talking about again?”
