Dawn was in the kitchen mixing up some pancake batter when they arrived. Spike started to prepare his blood breakfast as Xander wandered over to the phone and called his boss’s privet line.
“Hey boss I’m not going to be able to make it into work for a few days we’ve got a Hellmouth thing going down.”
Both Spike and Dawn froze at that and stared in shock at Xander as he laughed down the phone in response to some thing his boss had said to Xander.
“Yeah I’ll let you know. See you soon boss.” Xander hung up the phone and turned to face Dawn and Spikes shocked stares. “What?” he asked worried by their stares as he poured Dawn and himself a coffee.
Dawn and Spike looked at each other and then back to Xander.
“Hellmouth thing pet?”
“It’s not a lie exactly” Xander defended himself “I’ve got lots of stuff to get done so we’re as safe as possible, now that Buffys gone.” Xander finished softly.
“We get that Xander” Dawn interrupted “I think Spike meant about what you said to your boss.”
“Oh, yes well, you remember when I got hurt and had to take some time off a few months ago?” Xander explained “He was going to fire me so I told him I could explain why I kept taking time off, I asked if I could do it in privet when he agreed I took him for a drink and explained everything.”
“And he didn’t have you committed?” Spike asked surprised that Xander’s boss had believed him
“Well no of course not.”
“Why the hell not? Most people wouldn’t believe in demons even if they jumped up and bit them in the…” Spike paused and glanced over at Dawn “…neck”
Xander started smirking.
“I took him to Willys for our little chat, he couldn’t not believe in demons, I mean we were sitting in a demon bar for gods sake.”
Spike shook his head in disbelief.
“Sorry pet did you just say you took him to Willys? The demon bar?”
“I could hardly have had a such an important conversation like that in the Bronze now could I Spike. He wouldn’t have been able to hear me over the music.”
Spike stared at Xander for a few more moments before turning and starting to bang his head against the wall muttering ‘I (bang) can’t (bang) kill (bang) the (bang) whelp, (bang) I (bang) can’t (bang) kill (bang) the (bang) whelp….’
Dawn walked over and gently patted Spike on the back and said
“There, there Spike. We’ll just tell Willow and she can kill him for us.”
Xander burst out laughing at that and soon Spike and Dawn joined him.
