End of Chapter 6

As he entered his apartment downstairs he admitted to himself that he had expected her to come back, but not to join them she worked for Wolfram & Hart and he had been certain that her face would be the last thing he saw before he turned to dust.

Chapter 7: Thank You

They were starting with the basics. Wesley watched her movements and was fully aware he wasn’t the only one watching Synn as she displayed her skills on the workout mat.

“Is this all were going to do?” Synn asked easily flipping over and glancing over at Wesley. He had run her through a series of drills that for her required little effort. “I can do all this already; I can do this in my sleep.”

“A slayer can always use more training you need to hone your skills.” Wesley replied because he didn’t know what else to say. Quite simply technique wise she was quite impressive her style was a combination of many techniques and her form and execution were extraordinary.

“What fighting styles have you studied?” He asked watching her combine two different styles into one fluid move.

Synn wiped away a trickle of sweat than ran along her temple. “To many to recount if it was useful in anyway Adrian had me tutored in it. Some were human fighting techniques others were not.” Synn walked to the edge of the mat picking up her water bottle.

“And weapons?” Wesley asked, even though he was afraid of the answer.

A smile spread across her lips. “I can’t fly a helicopter or a plane if that helps.” At the look Wesley gave her she sighed. “I can pick most locks, crack most safes, bypass almost any security system, and I have extensive weapons training.”

“Then we will do our training in the field, I hadn’t planned on it but tonight we will patrol you can get your first taste of Slaying.”

“My first taste,” Synn asked softly raising a brow.

“As a Slayer not as a hired killer,” Wesley found himself rolling his eyes as he pushed up his glasses.

Synn began to work through a series of moves very aware of the pair of eyes watching her from the shadows.

Angel watched the girl carefully he didn’t trust her one bit after the hotel room. It would be stupid to think she was just going to change her ways to become a Slayer. Leading a life like hers left a mark, that couldn’t just be washed away.

As he watched the motions of her body her skill was evident, she was fluid, adaptable, and precise in her movements. There was little Wesley was going to be able to teach her in a training room. Without an opponent to test her skills in hand to hand those skills couldn’t be gauged yet but after the incident in the hotel combined with the way she moved he had no doubt they were just as honed.

If she were any other girl he would wait to see how she tested out in the field, but she lived and worked out in the field so he had little delusions as to the patrols outcome. Without a doubt she would pass with flying colors. Angel would be there anyway he wasn’t about to let Wesley go out with her alone.

Synn swept around burying the stake she was given as her weapon and drove it into the vampire’s chest. A cloud of dust filled the air, stepping back she turned toward Wesley.

“Impressive.” It was not the first time he had said that word that evening.

“So this is what a Slayer does, goes around killing things all evening.” Synn asked moving past him on the route he planned for them that evening.

“It’s called patrolling.” Wesley responded dryly falling into step besides her. Though he found a place with Angel it wasn’t the same as being a watcher. It felt good to have another chance to prove to him self that he could it. “You saved that girl how does that feel?”

Synn glanced toward Wesley. “I am supposed to say wonderful it filled me with glowing warmth I have never felt before.”

Wesley shook his head chuckling softly. “No I want to know exactly what you felt, this isn’t going to work if you don’t tell me the truth.”

Synn shrugged, “I don’t know. I don’t feel great I don’t feel bad. You told me that this is what a Slayer does so I did it.” Synn stopped turning toward Wesley searching his face. “Not the answer you wanted.” Synn sighed continuing along their preplanned path.

“Before we met and you knew that you were slayer, and you saw that girl being attacked what would you have done?” Wesley asked.

“I would like to say that I stopped and saved her, but I don’t know.” Synn replied softly.

“I think you would have let her die.” Wesley responded keeping his voice neutral. “But that was before you knew who you were. Before you knew you were meant for another path than the one you had been following.”

Synn was about to respond but kept her comments to herself. “Is Angel going to follow us every night?” She asked glancing back over her shoulder.

“I suspect so, he doesn’t trust you.” Wesley responded seeing no point in lying to the girl she wasn’t stupid.

“Yet you do.” Synn asked, “Why?”

“Because everyone deserves a chance,” Wesley responded. “From the moment you were born your parents determined you path for you, its time you were given a choice. The fact that you came back proves that you are willing to take a chance, if you’re willing to take a chance on me, I am willing to do the same.”

Wesley watched Synn as she headed off after they stopped patrolling. The sun was rising soon so their patrol was done for now.

“She’s good.” Angel fell into step with Wesley.

“Yes she is. She knew you were following us.” Wesley headed back toward the office.

Angel sighed frowning slightly. “I know she picked upon my presence from the very start. Is she still working for Wolfram & Hart?”

Wesley shook his head. “I would say yes, she hasn’t come around completely but she will.”

Angel glanced over at Wesley. “You seem so certain.”

“It’s in her eyes the desire to belong to something bigger than her,” Wesley stopped facing Angel. “I can’t explain it, but she is willing to try, so I am willing to help her.”

“What if she chooses Wolfram & Hart?” Angel asked softly.

Wesley glanced away moving past Angel, not liking how the thought hurt. It wasn’t just the fact that he would have failed again he recognized the potential Synn possessed. She had the potential to do great things if only he could reach her. “Then we will deal with that if it happens.”

“Or she will deal with us.” Angel fell into step with Wesley.

Synn flipped through the specs on the building she was going to be breaking into for the job she had lined up for Wolfram & Hart. She had taken the assignment and would see it through, and then she could decide what she wanted to do.

After only a few weeks working with Wesley she found him unlike anyone she had ever met or rather taken the time to talk too. She had to admit she didn’t devote that much time to anything other than work effectively closing her off from forming new attachments. It was easier to do her job that way. It had been that way for as long as she could remember.

Tonight while patrolling with Wesley she had lied in a sense and she hoped it didn’t become habit. Wesley was giving her chance and had given her his trust and she didn’t want to lose that. He asked her what she felt about saving that girl she told the truth. But she hadn’t added that she had felt something working with him.

Then she hadn’t argued with him when he said she would have let that girl lie, because she wouldn’t. It was rare that she took a job where the person she was taking out didn’t deserve it. It was one thing Adrian couldn’t get her to budge on. Early on she didn’t know any better so she had probably taken out some innocent people.

Tonight for the first time she felt like she belonged that she had a purpose and it scared her more than she would like to admit. Wesley’s trust scared her because in the end she wasn’t sure if she could do it, be a Slayer. But she was willing to give it a shot. Only she had one more job that she had agreed to do, and she had never gone back on her word.

Lilah set the phone down a smirk on her face. Step one in her plan was done. One little phone call and Angel Investigations was on the case. Poor Lindsey she wondered how he was going to take it when his little wonder girl didn’t bring him the trinket the senior partners were so eager to get their hands on. Lindsey was a rising star at the firm and she wanted to knock him down a peg or two.

It was only fair they had been recruited at the same time, yet he was on the rise, and she wasn’t. If she had to play dirty then so be it. After all it was the Wolfram and Hart way.

Synn slipped into the room undetected the mark had paid a pretty penny to secure the artifact, but in the end it didn’t matter. Moving to the room containing the display case she whispered a few words and the temperature in the room began to lower. Most people either depended upon one type of security either mystical, or technological, but not this mark. Two security systems were at work, and she had taken out one and was working on the other.

Wesley and Angel made their way through the house. It had been fairly easy, too easy if you asked him. Something wasn’t right they had been given the tip that someone at Wolfram & Hart wanted this artifact. The tip had to come from inside and they debated whether this was a trap.

However, the artifact in question was very powerful and volatile. It was neither good nor evil simply power to be wielded by the barer. In the hands of someone at the firm it would do a lot of damage.

Synn slid the amulet into the pocket of the vest she was wearing. Everything was running according to plan actually she was ahead of schedule. As moved away from the case a prickling sensation very familiar danced up her spine and at first she couldn’t believe it.

Then the door to the chamber opened and Wesley came into view. The moment their gazes met she saw it the surprise followed quickly by disappointment.

“Synn,” Wesley didn’t even bother looking at the case, because if she was here he knew where the artifact was located. “You can’t give that artifact to Wolfram & Hart.”

Angel’s slipped into the room, shutting the door behind him. Their ease at entering the building and their success at bypassing the security was now revealed. They had been following in the footsteps of a professional.

“I have to.” Synn replied her gaze shifting to Angel in warning, he had begun to move toward her flank which wasn’t a smart move. “You don’t understand I took this job before I agreed to work with you.”

“You don’t have to do anything.” Wesley growled his voice rough his disappointment in Synn overriding caution. Over the past few weeks he had deluded himself into thinking he had made progress, but she had been working for them the entire time.

“Do you have any idea what that thing can do. You may not wield the killing blow but you supply evil the tools to do just that. Didn’t you ever think about the artifacts you have been collecting over the years for your clients and think what its new owners might be doing with them? The blood they spill is on your hands too.”

“You don’t understand the world I come from Wesley. I can’t just go back to the client and say sorry I don’t feel like doing the job.”

“I am not letting you take that amulet out of here.” Wesley’s voice dropped and was deadly serious. Angel glanced toward his partner because in all their time he had never heard such unwavering strength and resolve.

Synn met Wesley’s gaze quickly building up the walls she had let slip. “You can’t stop me.”

“No,” Wesley agreed and whirling around he sent his fist toward the nearest case. As the glass shattered an alarm sounded. “But I am sure they will have a better shot.” Wesley stepped back grabbing Angel by the arm, as several shadowy figures appeared from several urns around the room.

Synn saw the figures materializing, and glanced back to the door way.

“You may be a Slayer, but you disgrace the line and every Slayer before you and everyone that will come after. You never deserved to be given such a gift.”

Angel reached back into the room and jerked Wesley outside slamming the door just as the figures solidified and moved in on the barer of the amulet. They needed to get out of the building because if they waited any longer while Synn was facing the mystical guards they would have to deal with the ones heading up the stairs at that moment.

Synn stumbled as she managed to make her way through the alleyway toward her SUV. The loss of blood was making her light headed, not to mention they amount of magic it took to take both waves of guards. Though she managed to get out of the building she wasn’t getting away unscathed. The amulet was tucked still tucked inside the pouch beneath her jacket.

Managing to get her key out of her pocket she unlocked the door and slid into the seat. Closing her eyes she took a deep breath and focused. After a few moments she got a grip and managed to ignore the burning pain coursing though her body. It was easy to silence the physical pain it was those words, and the look in Wesley’s eyes that she couldn’t wipe away.

Managing to stay focused she weaved her way through traffic, and headed toward the one person who wouldn’t judge. Pulling into the driveway Synn rested her head on the steering wheel needing a moment to gather her strength. Lifting her head she saw a familiar figure emerge from the house, and opened the door to the car stumbling out of the car she used the door to brace herself from falling.

“What have you done to yourself?” Maria asked rushing to Synn’s side. “My god child,” Maria gasped getting a better look at the girl she had raised.

“Oh he had nothing to do with this.” Synn chuckled as Maria slid an arm around her waist. “And I could hardly do this to myself.”

“This is not amusing.” Maria snapped. Synn was loosing a good amount of blood. Maria knew her strength was waning as Synn leaned on her more with each step. “I will take care of you, don’t you worry.” Maria whispered just as she took on Synn’s full weight as she passed out.

Leaning down Maria swept the girl up in her arms. It was going to take a lot of work piecing Synn back together but the little trinket would be useful in the endeavor though it would take time.

Wesley walked into Angel Investigations and set his latest acquisitions on his desk. The volumes had been part of an estate sale, and he had paid very little for the wealth of information contained within the bindings. Glancing out the window his mind wandered from books to Synn. It had been almost 3 weeks.

They had no idea what had happened in that building. After they barely escaped themselves they had arrived back to the office. Cordy had been watching the news and the building had been set ablaze. Several bodies had been found among the wreckage none had been identified. Since another Slayer hadn’t been activated he knew that she was alive somewhere.

The thought sent a chill down his spine for he imagined when she would be coming for them soon. Angel had gone on the offensive right after they arrive home.

“This came for you while you were out.” Cordelia gave Wesley a smile. While she hadn’t agreed with his decision to train Synn she hated what he was doing to himself.

Wesley believed he failed Buffy and Faith and now yet another Slayer. Cordy watched from her desk as Wesley turned the large bubble package in his hands. He tore the package open and something slid out into his palm. Cordy glanced toward back of the office as Angel came upstairs it was almost sundown.

Glancing back at Wesley she saw him still staring down at his palm.

“What is it?” She asked getting up a little alarmed he just kept staring at what was in his hand. “Wesley!”

Angel came into the room as Wesley lifted his gaze he looked so tired. Over the past few weeks something inside him seemed be withering and dying little by little.

Wesley glanced back down then lifted his hand letting the amulet slide free. It swung from the chain he held onto.

Angel glanced at Wesley. “Is it a warning, a threat?” Cordelia asked her gaze focused on the beautiful creation. “It’s beautiful.”

Wesley picked up the envelope and a scrap of paper fell out. Angel wanted nothing more than to grab the paper and read its contents but he simply waited as Wesley scanned it. The amulet in itself spoke volumes the note was for Wesley alone. Luckily for him they had Cordelia.

“What does it say?” Cordelia demanded leaning over the desk her fingers caressing the amulet.

Wesley slid the note in his pocket. Glancing at Angel he got up and grabbed his things. He needed to get out of there he needed some air.

“Take care of this, for me.” Wesley handed the Amulet to Angel and headed out the door.

“Wesley what does the note say.” Cordelia demanded stepping his way.

Wesley sidestepped Cordelia and headed out the door. Whirling around in a huff Cordelia tossed her hands up in the air. “Can you believe that?”

Angel smiled sadly his gaze flickering toward the door, he had no idea what the note said but after reading it there was some life back in Wesley’s gaze. For that alone he was willing to be left in the dark.

Wesley sat down in the park bench. The note hadn’t been long just simple and to the point and written by an elegant hand.

“You were right. I don’t deserve this gift, but I will someday. Thank you.”
