Chapter 7

Dawn sat down carefully in the entertainment area, still not fully comprehending what he needed a 65” TV screen for along with everything else he had purchased to accompany it. She inched back on the black leather sofa, not wanting to disturb anything while she waited for Spike to finish upstairs. This was eerily reminiscent of her dad’s apartment in LA. Leather sofas that you didn’t sit on, TV’s that you didn’t watch and everything else that was just for show when people came round to visit. If Spike was gonna change now he didn’t live in a crypt Dawn didn’t know what she would do. Spike was her only true friend.

“Ready to fly?” Spike hollered as he flew down the stairs, diving onto the sofa next to her and lying back, his feet across her lap. She smiled. He was still Spike. Throwing his feet off she stood up and extended her arm to help him up, allowing him to pull her back down.

“Want to go home already?” Spike mock pouted making Dawn giggle. She nodded.

“Gotta be back before Buffy. And we can walk ‘cause it’s still light out.” Spike’s eyes lit up at the prospect of taking another stroll in the sunlight. It was fast becoming his favourite pastime. Besides annoying the Slayer and her GI Joe. And speaking of annoying partners, where was Harmony? He would have to check in at his crypt to see if she was still hanging around.

Leaving all his things inside and locking up, Spike decided that he wouldn’t go back to his crypt. If Harmony was there then she would just follow him and annoy him anyway. There was nothing worth going back for. He was changing. Becoming someone that the Slayer would approve of. And possibly love. Yeah right. Stupid bint was too into her toy soldier to even notice. He’d just have to catch her attention some other way.

Walking slowly, Dawn had linked her arm into his and was busy pointing out some of things he’d missed so dearly over the past century. Not that he was ever gonna admit to having missed the flowers and the clouds and the smell of the ocean and all those things little girls got excited over. Just like Dawn, he thought, pulling her close to him for a reassuring squeeze before breaking away and running wildly, flailing his arms in the air as Dawn took off after him.

Arriving on the Summer’s back porch he collapsed into a heap while he waited for Dawn to catch up. Closing his eyes for a second he let her think she could creep up on him before reaching out and grabbing her, tackling her to the floor, his nimble fingers tickling her ribs as she bucked and squealed.

Slamming open the back door, Buffy stood with her hands on her hips, glaring at the pair, clearing her throat noisily until they noticed her.

“Get away from her.” She spat. Dawn frowned; it wasn’t like he was hurting her. Why was Buffy so mad?

Spike extended his hand to Dawn, helping her up and giving her a push to the door. She turned around and poked out her tongue, making him react just as maturely.

“Gotta fly pigeon, I’ll be here at 9.” He blew her a kiss then blew one to Buffy just to annoy her before vanishing into the shadows of the darkening sky.
