Freudian Slip

Faith pulled the car to a stop outside of the clinic. “I didn’t miss this place.” Buffy groaned as she got out of the car. They walked up to Dr. Shapiro’s office.

“Hello girls.” The Doctor chirped from behind her desk. “How are you doing Buffy?”

“Good I think. I’ve just been staying home spending some time with Buffy.” The blond sat herself in a chair.

“And you Faith?”

“I’m great. I love being around Buffy again.”

“I’m sure you do.” Her smile was sincere. “Well I guess we should get started. Buffy as you know in in-patient we talked mostly about tools that you can use to stay clean. Now that you’ve graduated to the next step we’re going to spend more time on how you started the drug abuse in the first place. Why don’t we start with why you left home.”

Buffy shifted in her seat. “Well there was Faith. When she went into her coma I didn’t know how to function. I felt like it was my fault. I had a lot going on and I was only 18.”

“You had just graduated from High School, correct?”

“Yeah. High School was rough. I felt like I had to much on my metaphorical plate…”

“High School is a lot to deal with…” Dr. Shapiro didn’t look up from her notes. “…I’m sure that being the Slayer didn’t make it any easier.”

Both of the Slayer’s jaws dropped. “How?”

“What are you talking about?” Buffy crossed her arms. The doctor smiled sweetly.

“It’s OK girls. My Father is a Watcher. When I was reading your paper work you listed Rupert Giles as an emergency contact. The name rang a bell and I didn’t figure it out until a few days ago. You’re both the right age. I called my Father and asked for the Slayer’s name. He was reluctant but finally I got your names. Two Slayers’, I was amazed. How did that happen?”

“I died.”

“What she said.” Faith was on alert.

“Faith everything is fine. He doesn’t know where Buffy is. He doesn’t know that she’s my patient.”

“You guys are fucking everywhere.” Faith groaned.

“I’m sorry. Buffy I know that it must be hard for you to be in such close contact with someone affiliated with the Counsel.”

“No, it’s…fine. God I haven’t thought of them for so long.”

“Yeah well I’ve spent a good portion of my life of slayerness trying to avoid anything of the English variety.” Faith slouched in her chair.

“I apologize Faith. I know that you haven’t ever been fond of the counsel.”

“Your Dad tell you that?”

“Well, yes. Girls I don’t want to spend anymore time talking about them. These sessions have to do with Buffy as a person and not as a Slayer.”

“But there one in the same. There like water and… something that gets mixey with water.” Buffy pondered.

“I think that it doesn’t have to be that way Buffy. The life of a Slayer is stressful at best. Your life as a person can be any way that you want it to be. Being the Slayer is a big part of who you are, but you’re also a mother and one half of a partnership. You have to learn to give equal amounts of time to all parts of your life.”

“But being the Slayer is who am. I have to save the world…” She paused and took Faith’s hand. “…We have to save the world on a weekly basis and if we don’t do that I wont have a life to give equal parts to.” Faith smiled at seeing some of Buffy’s convictions return.

“You’ve shared that repeatedly, but hiding behind that stops you from excepting reasonability for the other major parts of your life.”

“I’m not hiding. I’m just…staying out of the way.”

“Tell me Buffy, how has ‘staying out of the way’ benefited you thus far?”

“I got Gage.”

“And where is Gage?”

“He’s with a friend. He’s in good hands… or something like that”

“Why isn’t he with you?”

“I…He…He’s better off with Angel right now.”

“He’s better off with Angel because you couldn’t take care of him?”

“No I…” Buffy looked to Faith. The darker girl squeezed her hand in comfort.

“Buffy it’s ok that you weren’t able to take care of him. You have a lot to work on just with yourself and with Faith before you can be functioning parents. It is important that you remember that Gage is a reasonability that isn’t going away. It’s just like slaying, in that it is something that you have to deal with and take care of.”

“I didn’t take care of him…” Buffy whispered to herself. “Faith I didn’t take care of our baby.”

“Your setting that straight right now B.”

“I left him alone…” She trailed off into tears.

“That is why you must work very hard Buffy. So that Gage has the mother that he deserves.”

“We’re gonna make it up to him B.”

“Buffy before you can start working on things with Gage, you have to get better. You cant be a parent to him if you can’t deal with yourself.”

“So how do I go about doing that?”

The doctor smiled. “Well, that’s what I’m here for.”

Sunnydale

“They’re going to be here any minute.” Willow was pacing the floor of the Summers’ living room.

“Sweetie sit down.” Tara tried to coax the jittery redhead.

“What if he doesn’t like us?”

“How could someone not love you?” Tara pulled her to the couch. They looked to see Joyce walking down the stairs.

“What time did Angel say he’s be here?”

“9:00.” Xander twitched in his chair.

“Relax luv.” Spike lit a cigarette.

“Hey! Put that out!” Xander squealed.

“He’s three Spike he cant be around that!” Willow reprimanded the vampire.

“What? Like little miss-high-and-mighty didn’t smoke around the kid?”

“Spike, please? Not now.” Joyce cooed.

“Yes Joyce.” Spike grumbled and walked outside.

“I wonder what he looks like.” Willow offered to the group.

“With the two babes destiny kicked out to be his moms? Cuuuuttee.” Xander returned.

“They’re here.” Joyce gasped and rushed to the front door. Willow, Xander, and Joyce crowded into the entranceway. Spike stood off to the side and Giles placed himself at the top of the steps.

“Look all of you! Still together…just like…always…” Cordelia smiled entering the home.

“Hello.” Angel moved through the crowd with Gage in his arms. Giles looked at the little boy he was the perfect blend of his two Slayers. He had Faith’s complection with almost-black hair and Buffy’s vibrant green eyes. When the boy looked up and grinned at the watcher Giles was shocked to see Buffy’s smile and Faith’s dimples. He had never laid eyes on a more perfect child.

“Angel?”

“Yes Gage?”

“Who they?” He looked around at the Scooby gang. The young boy clung to the vampire.

“That’s your grandma and the man up the steps there is your papa Giles. This lady here is your aunt Willow and that’s Aunt Tara. The goofy looking guy over there is Uncle Xander and that’s…Spike.”

“He’s a ‘ampire.” Gage stated, proud of himself.

“That’s what he says.” Joyce looked to Angel.

“How does he know that?”

“He just does.”

“It’s really been helpful on patrol.”

“You’ve taken him on patrol?” Willow was angry.

“Of course not…He has premonitions.”

“Oh my.” Giles began to clean his glasses.

“Wes is working on some theories.”

“I’m a bloody fine vampire.” Spike whispered to himself. Gage wiggled his way out of Angel’s arms and ran over to Spike.

“You funny.”

“No, I’m a bad man.”

“Uh-uh. I see it. You love uncle Xander. You good now, like Angel.”

“I am nothing like Angel half pint.” Gage giggled and looked at Joyce, Willow, and Xander sitting on the couch.

“It not her fault.” He said, pulling himself on Willow’s lap.

“What sweetie?” Joyce said smoothing the hair out of his face.

“Mommy is sick, it not her fault.”

“Honey…”

“She get better soon. My moms come home and we be happy.”

“You mean Faith?”

“Faith is my mommy too.”

“That’s right Gage.” Cordelia patted his knee. “Your mommy Faith loves you very much.”

Gage scooted over to Joyce. “Mommy told me I had the best grandma in the world. She say you love me very much.” Joyce wrapped her arms around the little boy.

“I do Gage. I love you very much. We all love you very much.” She kissed his forehead and set him on the floor. “Angel can I talk to you in the kitchen?” She walked into the other room with the Vampire in tow.

“I want Gage to stay here. After all I am the only real family that he has. I think that it would be best.” Angel shifted nervously.

“Joyce I cant do that.”

“You don’t have to, I will.”

“Fine, I cant let you do that. All of us here love that little boy Joyce but the people that matter the most are Faith and Buffy and they feel that he would do best staying with me.”

“He’s my grandson Angel.”

“And he’s their son.”

“He’s Buffy’s son.”

“Joyce you know that isn’t true. I know that you don’t care for Faith but he is Gage’s mother. Buffy is not capable of making choices for Gage right now so that leaves it up to Faith. I have to do what she wants.”

Joyce sighed and walked out of the room. She was going to enjoy her grandson while she could.

New York

“Are ok B?” Faith whispered, wrapping a blanket around the small girl on the porch.

“Yeah.” Buffy pulled the brunette down into a kiss. “The doc just freaked me I have a long way to go before I get to be Buffy again.”

“We’ll get there B.” Faith folded her arms around Buffy. “We’ll get there.” She kissed the blonde on the forehead and tried to fathom how far she and Buffy had to go before they could get back to where they wanted to be.
