Chapter 7: Melee
Faith got to her feet, pulling Buffy up after her. “Can you stand?” She demanded over the top of the heavy knocking on the door. What were they using? A truck?
“Yeah,” Buffy’s voice was weak, but she tried to step away from the brunette. Faith managed to catch her before she fell back down. “I guess I mean no.” Buffy braced her hands against the wall behind her allowing Faith to let her go.
“Get yourself into a corner and stay there, or better still the coffin.” Faith looked hurriedly from the door, which looked to be holding fast thanks to the big lump of stone leaning on it, around the rest of the room. There wasn’t a lot of inspiration.
She flicked her lighter on again and lit the candles in the fancy holder she’d found earlier. Vampires could see better in the pitch black than she could, there was no point giving them an un-necessary advantage.
Four candles flared brightly and Faith could see that Buffy hadn’t moved from leaning on the wall. “B, move.”
The blonde was panting even though she was just standing there, and in the new light her face looked waxy and pale. “Jeez, Girlfriend, you don’t look so good.”
Buffy turned to her. “I’m fine.” She assured. “We haven’t got any weapons, we can’t fight that many with nothing.”
“I don’t think you’re gonna be able to do much anyway B, no offence, but you look about ready to fall down. This’ll be easier with you out of the way.”
“I can’t let you fight alone.” Buffy insisted. She tested her ankle once more. Damn, she must have lost quite some blood for her Slayer healing to be this slow. Normally she’d be doing cartwheels right now. Well, obviously not right now, because of the almost certain death trying to get in, but in theory.
“You die tonight, I will be alone.” Faith started to manoeuvre the blonde away from the door. The way Buffy was suddenly looking at her was starting to freak her out.
“We know you’re in there Slayers. Just come out and we’ll make this easy on you.” It was the cocky Vampire from before. Faith was just itching to get into it with him. “Or don’t, if you die of the cold first, we’ll just eat you tomorrow with Salad.”
Faith kept moving with Buffy. The blonde was able to hop which made it easier, but most of her weight was still on Faith’s arm.
The talking had stopped and the pounding had returned by the time Faith got Buffy behind the Sarcophagus, which was as far as the brunette had the patience to go, she still had to find something to kill with.
Buffy whimpered a little as she was pushed to the ground, but she didn’t protest. Faith leaned over her head and into the coffin behind her. When she was squatting in front of the older Slayer again she pushed an arm bone into her hands.
Faith watched Buffy’s expression as the blonde recognised the smooth, polished object for what it was, and so was on hand to push it back into her grip when she tried to drop it in disgust.
“Eww, Faith, no!” It came out as a harsh whisper. It was a little late for whispering though.
“Save it, Blondie, it’s all we’ve got. If any of them come too close, I don’t know; poke them with it or something.”
Buffy caught Faith’s arm as she was about to stand up again.
“Faith, be careful.” The brunette was about to shrug off Buffy’s concern, but she wouldn’t allow it. “I mean it. I don’t want you to die either.”
Faith smiled at her in the flickering candle light and Buffy looked back, her face pale but sincere.
“I’ll try not to disappoint.” She promised, hesitating a second before leaning in to place a small kiss on Buffy’s brow.
The dark Slayer was caught by surprise when Buffy cupped the back of her neck and drew her down to face her, their noses inches apart. She held her breath in anticipation.
Buffy smiled softly, “You better not.”, and butterfly kissed the end of her nose.
Faith’s held breath rushed back out when the splintering crack of the door being broken in two came from behind them.
“Stay there!” She commanded, leaping up and over the sarcophagus to land in front of the half open door.
A vampire appeared in the new gap even as her feet touched the floor, a thigh bone in each hand, and grinned evilly at her. “That was the hardest I’ve ever had to work for my lunch, you better be worth it.” He growled and lunged at her.
Bringing the thigh bones up in a wide arc they both made contact with his head and he fell to the ground unconscious.
“Well I thought that was pretty easy. Guess I’m just better than you.” She told his motionless body.
The top half of the door had been broken off just above where the great slab of stone was holding it shut. It created kind of a ramp down into the crypt. Two more vampires appeared at the top of the ramp, struggling to be the one through first.
As the one on the left popped through, Faith thrust out a bone and popped his nose. It broke, making him angry as hell. He grabbed her weapon before she could fully retract it and yanked it from her fingers. Undeterred she brought her second bone down on his head, but he ducked and rolled out of the way; and his companion attacked.
While Faith struggled with the two of them, two more entered through the broken door.
*********************************************
Buffy crawled around the side of the sarcophagus on all fours to see what was going on.
What she saw was Faith being waled on by two vampires, and a third just waiting to be tagged into the ring. Another was standing atop what was left of the door looking around, probably for her.
Keeping her head low and inching painfully forward Buffy stuck out the hand holding the gross bone and hooked it between the feet of one of the Faith’s aggressors. As Faith punched him he staggered back, tripping and landing heavily on the ground near her hiding place.
Faith took a second to stomp on his private parts before pivoting to kick his friend in the teeth. The creature fell back in pain, bumping into the one just watching and they both toppled over in a tangle of flaying arms and legs.
A sudden smile hit Buffy when she had a brainwave. Pulling herself up with the edge of the stone coffin she leaned down inside it and rummaged around. Balling up the tinder-dry burial gown, she apologised to the skull for desecrating him, or her, and slipped back down to the floor.
“I see her. She’s in here, Boss.”
Buffy ignored the shout of the vampire in the doorway, just hoping she had enough time to carry out her plan before his ‘boss’ appeared.
“Faith, throw me your lighter.” She called over the sounds of the fight and sirens, could she hear sirens? Or was her brain just sending her a warning that her body about to pack up for the night.
Faith fell back from punching a girl-vamp repeatedly in the face to toss her Zippo in a perfect arc, before Buffy caught it, the brunette was back to punching.
Buffy, as quickly as she could with fumbly fingers and a still swirly head, flipped the top off the lighter and ignited it. She carefully touched the flame to the collection of rags she had twisted and knotted around the end of her bone. It caught and flared immediately.
Faith flew past backwards, hitting the wall and scrambling back to her feet.
“Faith - switch bones.” She called out.
Faith looked to her, saw the flaming torch she held and grinned.
“Alright.” The brunette exclaimed with glee. She swapped bones and leapt back into the fray. Flames were dragged across dead flesh and dust exploded around the small room.
Using the sarcophagus again to pull herself up, to her feet this time, Buffy tested her ankle. It felt a little better. At least, she thought it would hold her. Faith had taken out three vampires already, including the one Buffy had felled, but more were coming through the broken door and the gown wouldn’t burn forever.
‘Have to start carrying around some kind of gasoline or lighter fluid.’ She decided, but that would have to be next time. Right now she had a …bone. ‘Can’t help thinking that somewhere out there Xander is having furry bikini fantasies.’
With a grin, which came as equally from pain as any humour, she pushed off from the sarcophagus, stumbled awkwardly across the room keeping as much weight off of her bad leg as possible, and brought the leg bone she held down hard across a dead guy’s head.
He went down like a ton of vampire. ‘Maybe the bone is the modern Slayer’s weapon of choice after all.’ She turned on her good foot and caught another fang-face a ding on the ear. Down he went. ‘I bet Bloomies do a really nice fur bikini, and I really haven’t gotten to the beach enough in the last couple of years.’
“B, look out!”
Too late. Her back had been to the door and she’d been pondering the merits of leopard print over tiger and now sharp finger-nails were digging into her stomach really hard and ow!
At no where near full strength and far from perfect balance Buffy’s struggles were weak and ineffectual against her captor and the fingernails had to be drawing yet more blood from her if the sting was anything to go by. Faith was cussing somewhere behind her, but she couldn’t make out the actual words over the clamour of sirens. Police? Great she’d be in more trouble for fighting. At least she could explain to her mom now and not get grounded for it.
Whatever type of vehicle the noise was coming from, they were close. Right outside the cemetery if she was any guess, or maybe they’d even come through the gates. Buffy just hoped there was more than one car, and that they stayed in them. She couldn’t save the people out there while she was fighting for her life in here.
The vampire with the grip on her was trying to drag her backwards through the door, which she was pretty sure was not a good thing. She dug her heels in, but they just scraped across the stone and were probably getting ruined.
Before they made it to the doorway she was spun around as the vamp turned quickly. Every one of her injuries were aggravated and she yelped in pain.
Faith stood between them and the door. The torch was still in her hand, but the flames were dripping to the floor as the rags turned to ash and fell away.
“Legs up, B.”
Buffy pulled her knees up as high as she could, the hands around her waist keeping her in the air. Faith swung the still slightly flamey bone around into the vampire’s legs and run it up the inside of her calf and thigh.
The fiend’s dress began to burn, the fire slowly creeping up the material. The she-vamp shrieked and dropped Buffy and stared in horror at the flames licking their way upwards. She patted useless at her hips and her hands caught on fire. She flared brightly before combusting and her scream hung in the air as Faith rushed to Buffy’s side.
Buffy had landed badly, as the vamp had burned she tried to roll back to her hands and knees but she couldn’t make her body obey. She could hear gun shots from outside; they made her head hurt, but explained why no more vampires were bothering them for the minute.
And then Faith was leaning over her.
“Jeez, Buffy. Are you okay?”
She looked up at the brunette and the look of fear in Faith’s eyes made her breath catch. She tried to rise again, wanting to reassure her sister Slayer.
“Yeah, I’m fine, don’t worry…” She managed to sit halfway up before she blacked out.
I still don't own anything.
Honestly it is B/F, its just very soft B/F at the moment.
